Chapter 270 Bring Marlon's Body Home

At this moment, Raymond was buried in work at the Hughes Group.

Several open folders lay on the desk, waiting for his review and signature.

Raymond was dressed in a white shirt, covered by a black vest, and a solid black tie. He lounged casually in the leather chair of the CEO's office.

A pair of clean, clear glasses rested on the bridge of his nose.

This time last year, he was at the Hughes Manor, enjoying a happy gathering with Margaret and her parents.

Who would have thought that this year would be so cold and lonely?

After being driven back from the hospital by Margaret, he came to the Hughes Group.

When others were in a bad mood, they indulged in pleasures, drinking, gambling, singing, dancing, and letting loose.

Raymond wasn't like that. When he was in a bad mood, he buried himself in work, using high-intensity tasks to numb his heart and divert his attention.

At first, after neglecting Margaret and moving out of the Hughes Manor, he couldn't help but think of Margaret.

Whenever he thought of her, he couldn't bring himself to seek revenge or hate her.

So he moved out, trying to isolate himself from her physically.

The monotonous yet intense work made the Hughes Group grow stronger, but no one knew that every quiet night, when he stopped working, he still thought of Margaret.

"Mr. Howard, are you listening?" Hubert's voice came through the phone again.

Raymond had been lost in thought and hadn't heard what Hubert was saying.

"Go on," Raymond's thoughts were pulled back, and he wearily took off his glasses, placing them on the folder.

Hubert repeated, "Mrs. Howard has taken Mr. Hughes out of the hospital."

Raymond felt a sense of relief upon hearing this, thinking Marlon was out of danger. He could also clear his name.

Raymond's tense heart was no longer as anxious and worried. His tone remained indifferent, as he was used to sealing his emotions deep within.

So no matter what happened, he could remain calm and composed.

"Today is New Year's Eve; it's only natural for him to be discharged," Raymond said in a deep voice, pinching the bridge of his nose with his long fingers.

Just as Raymond was about to hang up, Hubert added, "Mr. Howard, you might have misunderstood. Mr. Hughes has passed away. Mrs. Howard has taken his body back."

Raymond's mind went blank instantly.

"What did you say?" Raymond asked in disbelief.

Hubert said, "Mr. Hughes fell from such a height. When we arrived, he had a brain hemorrhage, and most of his blood vessels had burst. His internal organs were pierced by broken bones."

"Mr. Howard, we really did our best. We tried to save him for three whole hours until he was beyond saving, and then we stopped."

"Mr. Hughes couldn't speak while he was alive, and even walking was a hassle. A successful entrepreneur had become a cripple. He must have been in a lot of pain and suffering. I think his death might have relieved his pain."

Raymond listened quietly, without responding for a long time. Then he hung up.

Marlon was dead, and he died on New Year's Eve.

Raymond recalled Marlon's actions today, deliberately sending Nancy and Margaret away, walking to the balcony, refusing his help, and even hitting him.

Connecting all these details, Raymond instantly understood that he had fallen into Marlon's trap.

Marlon had deliberately caused a scene in front of him.

Was he trying to exchange his life for Raymond's forgiveness of Margaret and Nancy? It seemed Marlon truly cared for Margaret.

But how did Marlon know he hadn't thought about giving up his hatred?

Raymond took out a pack of cigarettes, pulled one out, and put it in his mouth.

With a click, the lighter produced a yellow-blue flame.

One end of the cigarette was consumed by the flame, gradually flickering.

Taking a deep drag, Raymond tasted the bitter smoke in his mouth, feeling it roll in his lungs before slowly exhaling through his sharp nose and thin lips.

He thought of everything Margaret had done for Marlon.

In the heavy snow, Margaret knelt outside the Hughes Group.

To cover Marlon's medical expenses, she was willing to sign an unequal contract, work as a cleaner at the Hughes Group, and endure his humiliation.

Kneeling, begging, Getting pregnant for him, giving birth to his child.

Now Marlon was dead. Raymond couldn't imagine how Margaret would react. He didn't even dare to face Margaret.

Would she blame him for what happened today? But he was innocent too, framed by Marlon.

Margaret was still pregnant with his child.

No matter how scared he was, no matter how angry Margaret might be when she saw him, he still stubbed out the cigarette he had taken a few puffs of in the ashtray.

He stood up, grabbed the black suit jacket hanging on the chair, and draped it over his shoulders.

He put on a black coat as he walked out of the CEO's office, putting it on as he went.

Holding the car keys in his hand, his face was hurried.

He was anxious, his heart weighed down like a heavy stone.

How would Margaret react when she saw him? Would she yell and scream? Or would she hit him, curse him, and tell him to get lost?

No matter how difficult it was, he had to be by Margaret's side at this moment.

Because Margaret was his wife, he needed to be there for her, to support her.

The ambulance drove steadily on the empty road.

In the early morning, the road lined with trees had dim yellow lights shining through the large, umbrella-like trees on both sides, casting thin, dense beams into the ambulance.

Through the ambulance window, the light fell on Margaret and Marlon's body lying beside her.

The streetlights, like brave soldiers, cleared the way for Marlon's journey home.

Margaret's numb and vacant gaze fell outside the window.

Although such a wide road was decorated with streamers, it felt exceptionally desolate.

The ambulance turned into an alley, which was a wealthy area, full of low, spacious single-family homes.

Margaret turned her head as the ambulance passed by the single-family homes.

She saw families gathered together, faces full of smiles, raising their glasses in joy.

Margaret thought if Marlon hadn't had an accident today, her family would be just as happy.

The ambulance arrived at the tall iron gate.

Nancy was waiting at the gate for them. The gate was open, as if welcoming them home.

Above the gate were two large lights, casting a gentle glow on Nancy's face as she stood in the wind.

Margaret saw the smile on Nancy's face, the eager anticipation of a wife waiting for her husband and daughter to come home.

The ambulance slowly came to a stop, and the driver opened the door and jumped out.

Margaret followed him out, and the driver quickly opened the trunk door.
