Chapter 119 It's All Because of Her

Margaret clutched her phone so hard her knuckles turned white. She had no idea how to break it to Nancy that she’d been duped by him again.

Nancy kept talking, and Margaret just listened, feeling a massive wave of guilt wash over her.

The mess with the Hughes family and Marlon was all on her.

"Mom, don't worry. I'll have the money by tomorrow," Margaret said, her voice shaky, trying not to let on how freaked out she was. She quickly hung up.

She texted Raymond: [The director said if I don't pay the fee by tomorrow, they'll stop my dad's medication. Raymond, can you stop messing around?]

Margaret: [Raymond, I was wrong, okay? What do I have to do for you to send money for my dad?]

By the next morning, still no reply.

She wanted to call him but was scared of waking him up and making things worse, so she suffered in silence until around nine.

Finally, she dialed his number, but he didn’t pick up.

Margaret went through the discharge procedures, and the doctor looked pretty worried. "Your health isn't great. You should stay a few more days."

"No need, it can't get any worse. I'll come back tomorrow for the abortion," Margaret said with a bitter smile, then left.

She grabbed a cab to the Hughes Group and headed to the president's office, but it was empty.

Alvin said Raymond was in the restroom.

She cornered him at the public sink, but he didn’t even look at her, acting like she wasn’t there.

"Raymond, you need to send me the money now!" Margaret said, knowing she sounded desperate but having no other choice.

Raymond finally glanced at her and sneered. "Margaret, you really are shameless. Isn’t it clear enough that I didn’t reply to your messages? And you still come here to get humiliated?"

"Raymond, I'll do whatever you want, just send money for my dad." Margaret bit her lip, feeling the sting of humiliation.

Raymond sneered. "You can go to Daniel. Didn’t he want you to be his secretary? A little medical fee should be easy for him."

With that, Raymond brushed past her, leaving her standing there, feeling cold and alone.

Margaret gritted her teeth and growled, "Raymond, do you find this funny? Does the contract mean nothing? If you keep this up, my dad will die! He’s your elder!"

"That’s perfect! I’ll help you arrange his funeral! And you won’t have to deal with me anymore. Isn’t that great? Margaret, if I were you, I’d be hoping for his death! Why don’t you go tell him about your miserable situation being tormented by me? Maybe he’ll feel sorry for you and just die!" Raymond turned around, laughing. "I will never send him money! Margaret, you should start looking for a suitable urn for him!"

Margaret quickly grabbed his collar, tears streaming down her face. "You played me! Didn’t you?"

"Yeah, I did. What are you gonna do about it?" Raymond thought of the photo of the mute boy and her thing with Daniel, and said, "Margaret, this is your punishment for disobedience!"

As he spoke, he shoved her hand away, making her stumble back a few steps. She almost fell but managed to catch herself on the wall.

Raymond walked off, calling Alvin. "Keep an eye on Margaret. Make sure she doesn't do anything drastic."

Margaret left the Hughes Group, tears blurring her vision as she walked down the street, crying uncontrollably.

She felt so useless, getting played by Raymond over and over again!

She was so naive. She was Marlon's daughter and actually thought Raymond would help them.

Margaret sat at the bus stop, watching people and traffic pass by, crying helplessly.

Her phone suddenly rang.

She pulled it out and saw it was Nancy calling.

She knew Nancy was calling about the medical fees.

She didn't know how to answer or what to say if she did.

But she eventually picked up, and before she could speak, she heard Nancy's worried voice. "Margaret, why did you take so long to answer? Did something happen?"

"Mom, can we ask the director to delay the payment for dad's medical fees for a few more days?" Margaret asked, her voice shaky.

Nancy sounded confused. "It's already been covered, Margaret. Didn't you know?"

"Raymond sent the money?"

Margaret's eyelid twitched. So he said he wouldn't send the money, but he actually did?

"No. It was your friend, a tall man wearing a hat. He heard the director urging for the payment in the hallway and offered to cover it."

"Is his last name Taylor?"

"Yes. He is quite nice. Margaret, you should thank him. We couldn't rely on Raymond, but we could rely on him."

Margaret finally felt a weight lift off her shoulders, relieved that Marlon's medical fees were taken care of.

She hung up and sent a message to Daniel: [Thank you for covering my dad's medical fees. I will repay you.]

Daniel replied: [If you really want to thank me, how about treating me to dinner?]

Margaret didn't overthink it. She knew his request wasn't unreasonable. He helped her, so treating him to dinner was the least she could do.

Margaret texted: [Okay.]

She asked his preference for dinner, and he said anything was fine, so she picked a restaurant. At dusk, she arrived to find Daniel already waiting inside, dressed casually.

A black business car was parked outside the restaurant.

Alvin sat in the car, watching Margaret and Daniel through the restaurant's glass window.

Alvin rubbed his forehead, thinking Margaret was making things worse for herself. If Raymond found out she was secretly meeting with Daniel, the consequences would be unimaginable.

Raymond was still waiting for Margaret to come and beg for forgiveness in his office, but after several hours, there was no sign of her.

He called the hospital director, speaking coldly, "I'll cover Marlon's medical fees from my personal account. Use the best medical team and medication."

He couldn't bear to see Margaret sad and upset.

"And keep it confidential," he added, conflicted.

Being good to her and the Hughes family would only increase his guilt towards his parents, so he tormented Margaret while also wanting to protect her.

The director's nervous and awkward voice came through the phone. "Mr. Howard, the medical fees have already been covered by someone else!"
