Chapter 536 The Others Became Foils
"Margaret means the world to me. I love her just as much as you do. Trust me, I'll take good care of her. But you, man, you're not getting any younger. You should find yourself a girlfriend. Being single isn't all it's cracked up to be," Raymond said, patting Daniel on the shoulder before flicking his cigarette to the ground and stomping it out.
Daniel finished his cigarette and followed Raymond upstairs to help set up the wedding room. They hung balloons and placed festive decorations, working tirelessly to prepare for the next day's wedding.
They worked until midnight and were up again at six in the morning to greet guests. Daniel, dressed in a sleek black suit, stood tall in the wedding room, camera in hand, capturing candid moments.
The wedding was lively. Through his lens, Daniel saw the bustling scene, a sea of red decorations everywhere. Margaret, in her wedding dress, sat on the bed, half her face hidden behind a fan. Raymond, egged on by Alvin and the others, knelt before her, promising to love her forever.
Amidst the laughter, cheers, and applause, Raymond's defined fingers gently lifted Margaret's chin, and he kissed her softly. Even though it wasn't their first kiss, Margaret still blushed and felt her heart race.
Next, it was time for Margaret to be carried downstairs to the wedding car. As an orphan, the moment turned awkward. Daniel, holding his camera, spoke up from the crowd, "I'll carry her. From now on, I'm her brother."
Handing his camera to Alvin, Daniel walked over to Margaret and knelt down. She climbed onto his back, and he carefully held her legs as he descended the stairs, taking his time to savor this rare and final opportunity to carry her.
"Am I too heavy?" Margaret asked nervously, thinking her weight was slowing him down. "If it's too much, you can put me down once we reach the bottom."
Daniel didn't stop, smiling gently as he reassured her, "You're not heavy at all."
If only he could carry her every day, he thought wistfully. But that was just a dream.
As they reached the bottom, Raymond was already by the wedding car, holding the door open. Daniel placed Margaret in the back seat, taking a moment to admire her. She looked stunning, her makeup flawless, her smile radiant.
"Margaret, from today on, I'm your brother," Daniel said with a smile. "At the wedding, I'll personally hand you over to Raymond as your brother."
Tears welled up in Margaret's eyes as she nodded, touched. "Okay."
The car door closed, and she watched Daniel get into another car of the same color. Raymond, in his suit, joined her in the back seat, closing the door behind him. Alvin, the driver for the day, started the car and they slowly made their way to the hotel.
Margaret gazed out the window, watching the scenery pass by, the smell of fireworks lingering in the air. In the rearview mirror, she saw the crowd fade into the distance, followed by a convoy of luxury cars.
She thought about the journey that had brought her here and about Daniel, a truly remarkable man. He had been there for her through thick and thin, from giving her ointment on a snowy day to saving her from Ashley's attack, and even finding a liver donor for her. He had silently protected her for ten years. How many decades does one have in a lifetime?
Though he claimed his feelings for her weren't romantic, she knew better. He had said that to encourage her to reconcile with Raymond. Her nose tingled, and her eyes filled with tears, but this time, they were tears of gratitude.
Raymond noticed her tears and quickly took out a handkerchief to wipe them away. "Why are you crying?"
"Honey, you need to find a wonderful girl for Daniel. He's been alone for too long. I want him to be as happy as we are," Margaret said, her voice trembling.
Raymond patted her shoulder, understanding her emotions. In the past, he might have been jealous, but now he accepted it calmly. He gently wiped her tears and held her close. "Don't worry, I will. When the right girl comes along, I'll introduce them."
"She needs to be someone who sees him for who he is, someone who loves him deeply. He deserves to be happy and loved," Margaret insisted.
"Of course," Raymond replied with a smile.
Alvin, driving, chimed in, "Don't worry, Mrs. Howard. I'll have my wife help find someone for Mr. Taylor too. He's handsome, wealthy, and loyal. No girl could resist him. It's just a matter of time."
Margaret hoped that Daniel's special someone would come soon, ending his loneliness. He had spent so many years warming others' hearts; she wished for someone to warm his.
She wondered what kind of person Daniel's future wife would be and how they would meet, get to know each other, and fall in love.
They arrived at the hotel, and soon it was time for the wedding. Although Margaret had been through this before, her palms were sweaty with nerves. The guests filled the seats, and the celebratory music echoed through the hall. Spotlights flashed, and the room fell silent, all eyes on the moment.
Margaret, arm in arm with Daniel, stood at the edge of the red-carpeted stage. As the music played softly, the host exchanged pleasantries with the guests before inviting Raymond to the stage. Margaret watched him, tall and striking in his suit, standing in the center of the stage.
Daniel noticed her gaze fixed on Raymond, her smile uncontainable. "Is getting married really that exciting?" he teased.
Margaret, still looking at Raymond, replied to Daniel, "You don't understand. When you meet the one destined for you, you'll feel what I feel. You'll want to give her a home, marry her, and never let anyone else take her away."
Daniel knew that feeling all too well. He had protected the girl he loved, only to end up as her brother.
"Maybe that day will never come," he said with a self-deprecating smile. He had missed his chance, and now everyone else seemed like a mere shadow.
