Chapter 68 I'm Dying Soon

Dorothy buried Ashley's ashes in a cemetery that Sarah had bought.

A whole bunch of media folks showed up to film, and Dorothy played along, talking in front of the cameras about how awesome Sarah was and how much she had helped her family.

She said if she ever got the chance, she'd totally repay Sarah.

By nightfall, the media had cleared out.

Just as Dorothy was about to leave, someone threw a sack over her head.

She didn't even have time to react.

They pinned her to the ground and started beating her up.

At first, Dorothy screamed and cursed.

But as the beating went on, she curled up and begged for mercy.

A guy warned her, "Remember, don't mess with people you shouldn't. This is a lesson!"

Dorothy yanked the sack off her head, only to see the moon shining brightly in the quiet cemetery. There was no one around.

If it weren't for the pain all over her body, she would've thought it was all a bad dream.

"Margaret, it's you! You had me beaten up. Just wait and see." Dorothy gritted her teeth, pounding the ground with her fists, her eyes blazing with anger. "I wonder if your husband is more powerful than the law."

Margaret walked in the cold wind, suddenly feeling a chill down her spine, and sneezed.

She thought back to the bits and pieces of Ashley on Ironwood Lane, figuring that Ashley initially wanted to kill her but later changed her mind.

Ashley chose to crash into the Eldoria fence.

Who was behind Ashley?

Who wanted Margaret dead? Was it Raymond?

Raymond definitely wanted her dead. As soon as Ashley had the accident, he came to her hotel to see if she was dead.

She even stupidly bought medicine for him in the middle of the night, for a Raymond who wanted her dead. How ridiculous.

Margaret didn't want to misunderstand him, didn't want to take Sarah's words to heart, but Alvin's round-trip itinerary was likely real.

To check and avoid wronging Raymond, Margaret specifically called Alvin.

At that moment, Alvin had just called Raymond to report that Dorothy's matter was settled. Seeing Margaret's call, he was surprised but answered.

Margaret didn't waste time with small talk and directly asked, "Alvin, what date did you go to Ironwood Lane?"

Alvin's voice was gentle and warm. "The 11th."

Margaret murmured to herself, "The 11th, she also left on the 11th."

Sarah's itinerary was spot on.

Margaret knew Alvin's return date. That night, she bought medicine and called him. He said he couldn't help and had already returned to Silverbrook.

Margaret gripped her phone tightly, her cheeks stinging from the cold wind. After a while, she asked, "Did you go to Ironwood Lane on Raymond's orders?"

Alvin denied it. "No."

Margaret smiled bitterly, looking at the oppressive dark sky. "You answered too quickly. I want to hear the truth."

Alvin said, "It was Mr. Howard's idea."

Margaret bit her lip, blinking her dry eyes.

Raymond fired Ashley and had Ashley kill her.

He was worried that she wouldn't die, so he sent Alvin to follow.

Ashley had a daughter, Emily.

Ashley didn't want to kill but loved Emily very much.

Everything made sense now; the logic was clear.

Margaret didn't say a word, and Alvin added, "But Mr. Howard sent me to discuss a contract. Running into you was just a coincidence. Mrs. Howard, are you okay?"

A coincidence? No wonder Raymond showed up personally that night. Ashley had botched the job.

He wanted to see if they were both dead.

"I'm fine, Alvin. Sorry to bother you." Margaret's tone was cold and detached as she hung up.

Ashley's death was on Raymond.

Ashley died instead of her.

Margaret kept walking, unable to hold back her emotions, tears streaming down her face.

Her face flushed, she cried in utter despair and collapse.

She thought, 'Raymond, do you really want me dead that badly? I'm dying soon. Can't you wait a little longer?'

A terminal cancer patient didn't have long to live. Margaret sat on a stainless steel bench at the bus stop, covering her face and crying.

Passersby looked at her like she was crazy.

Margaret's body shook violently, like a leaf in the wind.

She couldn't accept that Raymond wanted her dead.

Her phone suddenly rang in her pocket.

It was Raymond calling, but it was drowned out by the roar of traffic and Margaret's sobs.

Margaret, still crying, pulled her phone from her pocket. There was a missed call from Raymond.

She remembered the last time he called her was on his birthday.

The day she went to Ironwood Lane.

How ridiculous. She went to Ironwood Lane to uncover the truth about his parents' death, but he wanted to kill her.

Margaret turned off her phone, feeling utterly drained.

She was so tired she could almost collapse.

She sat in the cold wind, watching the cars on the road.

A black car pulled up in front of her.

The door opened, and Alvin, dressed in a black suit, got out and opened the door for her. "Mrs. Howard, please get in the car."

Alvin had gotten a call from Raymond, tracked Margaret down, and came to pick her up.

Margaret didn't say anything, just gave a bitter smile. Raymond was really something, finding her so quickly.

Alvin drove Margaret to The Hughes Manor, handed her the car keys, and asked her to give them to Raymond.

He took a cab back to his own place.

Margaret held the car keys, which felt like a burning coal in her hand.

She entered The Hughes Manor, changed her shoes, and went upstairs.

She placed the car keys Alvin had given her on the cabinet, along with her black handbag.

Then she walked to the living room.

Raymond, dressed in casual clothes, had several empty wine bottles on the table.

Raymond downed the wine in his glass in one gulp. "Are you back yet? What did you talk about with that cop? Why are you so late?"

Margaret acted like she hadn't heard, giving him the cold shoulder.

This was the first time Raymond had been treated like he was invisible by her.

The old Margaret would hang on his every word.

A strange irritation filled his heart.

Raymond suddenly grabbed Margaret's arm, pulling her over forcefully. "Look at me! Do you still think you're the young lady of The Hughes family?"
