Chapter 84 Who Gave You the Guts to Treat Me Like This?

"Mr. Howard, Mr. Taylor's a straight-up dude. No way he'd pull something like that. Maybe there's some mix-up?" Alvin, gripping the wheel tight, threw a glance back.

If Margaret found out Raymond was up to no good behind her back, she'd totally flip out.

Raymond chuckled, catching Alvin's eyes in the rearview mirror. "What, I can't give you orders now?"

Alvin just pressed his lips together, eyes glued to the road. "I got it."

The orange streetlights lit up the snow swirling around, making everything look all lonely and bleak.

Daniel was having the worst luck. Getting close to Margaret was a bad move, and now he was in deep trouble.

In the restaurant, Margaret looked at Daniel, puzzled. "Mr. Taylor, you said you had something important to tell me. What's up?"

Daniel took a sip from his cup, meeting her gaze. "Your husband Raymond and Sarah didn't do anything that night. He's clean."

Margaret's eyebrow shot up, suspicion creeping in. "How do you know this? Oh, right, you work at that police station. Makes sense you'd know."

Daniel set his cup down, leaning in. "I was the one who answered your call that night. I also arrested Sarah."

Margaret gave a bitter smile. "Got it."

Daniel continued, "I only go by the evidence, no sides taken. Raymond was definitely wronged. Before we met at the coffee shop below The Hughes Group, I actually took Raymond's statement."

He added, "His assistant Alvin can vouch for him. He dropped Sarah off at the bus stop that night. Alvin took her home."

Margaret's confusion deepened. "What about the lingerie Sarah was wearing?"

Daniel replied, "She bought it herself to stir up trouble. I checked her delivery order; she definitely ordered it."

"At the time of the incident, Raymond was working overnight at The Hughes Group. No chance he did anything. I checked their surveillance footage. You can chill, Ms. Hughes."

"Since Sarah got detained, neither The Hughes Group nor Raymond pressured us to let her go. She was released today 'cause her detention period ended."

Margaret's eyes widened in surprise at Daniel's words.

As she ate, she thought, 'Sarah's really something, framing Raymond just to mess with me.'

So, that cleavage photo she got when she was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, was that Sarah's doing too? Was Raymond never in that hotel room?

But Raymond had told her he slept with Sarah and couldn't wait for the divorce.

The food that once tasted great now felt bitter and unbearable. She said flatly, "True or not, it doesn't matter anymore. We're already divorced."

"Is it 'cause of Sarah's photo? Ms. Hughes, now that you know the truth, maybe you don't need to go through with the divorce." Daniel paused, then continued eating, adding, "Raymond doesn't seem like a bad guy to me."

Margaret's lips twisted into a mocking smile. Raymond's acting skills were top-notch; he had both her and Daniel fooled.

Only she knew the cold, ruthless heart behind Raymond's charming facade.

She cut him off, "Mr. Taylor, the issues between Raymond and me can't be summed up in a few words. We got married for happiness, and now we're divorcing for the same reason."

Daniel raised an eyebrow and nodded. "I get it. Matters of the heart are tough for outsiders to judge. If you're not happy, then divorce is probably the right call."

Just then, the phone on the table buzzed, breaking the silence.

Margaret picked it up and gave Daniel an apologetic smile. "Sorry, Mr. Taylor, I need to take this."

Daniel nodded. "Go ahead."

Margaret stood up, phone in hand, and walked out of the restaurant.

Daniel kept eating, watching her leave.

Outside, a big tree stood at the restaurant entrance, its branches bare and lifeless.

Margaret, in her red down jacket, stood in the falling snow, taking the call.

Daniel watched her from inside, chewing thoughtfully.

Despite her privileged background, she seemed worn out, like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.

Half a minute later, Margaret rushed back, looking anxious. She grabbed her bag and said, "Mr. Taylor, something urgent came up. I need to go. Enjoy your meal. I'll make it up to you next time."

Daniel's eyes narrowed with suspicion. "What happened?"

Margaret looked flustered. Realizing he might be prying, he softened his tone. "Do you need a ride?"

"No, I drove here. Thanks for everything today, Mr. Taylor." She gave him a grateful smile, grabbed her bag, and hurried out.

Even though it didn't matter anymore, Raymond was still a mess. He might be innocent this time, but that didn't erase his past.

But she appreciated Daniel's kindness.

Margaret drove straight to the hospital, sprinting to Marlon's ward.

Inside, Marlon lay in bed, hooked up to all sorts of machines and tubes, eyes closed.

Nancy was crying to the director, "Director, this is too sudden. We didn't have any time to prepare. Can you give us some time? My husband is about to wake up."

"Mom, I'm here." Margaret rushed over. "What's going on? Why are we being asked to transfer hospitals?"

"Margaret, talk to the director." Nancy, wiping her tears, said when she saw her daughter.

Margaret wiped her tears and tried to comfort her mom, telling her not to worry.

The director looked at Margaret, frowning. "Ms. Hughes, we have no choice. Mr. Howard has cut off Mr. Hughes' medical expenses. According to company policy, if the prepaid medical expenses are insufficient, we have to transfer the patient."
