Chapter 598 When You Have Enough Capital, I Will Come to Settle This Account with You

The Taylor Group

It was already around eight or nine at night, but Walter was still at the office, buried in work. Daniel had gone on a date, leaving the mess for him to handle. Walter used to leave work on time, but now he had to be more diligent. He couldn't let Daniel come back with his girlfriend and find the company in shambles.

Walter had his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing his well-defined arms. Sitting in his leather chair, he flipped through the documents in front of him.

Suddenly, his phone rang. He continued reading the documents as he answered, "Hello?"

"Why do you sound so tired? Whose bed are you in?" Raymond teased on the other end.

Walter rolled his eyes. "Do you think I'm you? I'm single and working overtime. Get to the point, I'm busy."

"Daniel asked me to tell you that he won't be back for a while. He wants you to keep an eye on The Taylor Group, and he'll treat you to dinner when he returns."

"Why did he change his mind?" Walter's fingers paused on the documents, frowning. He remembered Daniel saying he'd be back in two or three days.

Raymond laughed. "He went on a date, and the girl didn't like him."

"Isn't that a good thing?" Walter said.

"He fell for her at first sight and plans to win her over before coming back," Raymond explained. "What kind of girl do you like? I can introduce you to someone."

"Raymond, when did you start a matchmaking service?"

"Just tell me what kind you like. I'll see if I know anyone suitable."

"No need," Walter declined.

Raymond got serious. "Everyone else has a wife, and you're still single. I feel bad for you. I'm curious, what are you like when you're in love? Tell me about your ideal girl."

"I'm fine as I am. Stop worrying about me."

"So, you do have someone you like. What does she look like? Bring her out, and Margaret and I will check her out for you."

Walter was about to respond when there was a knock on his open office door. "Walter."

It was a girl's voice.

Walter held the phone, his long fingers tugging at his tie, and then he looked up.

Nia stood at the door.

"No wonder you're working late, you have a female subordinate with you. What does she look like?" Raymond gossiped over the phone.

Walter squinted and hung up. He placed the phone on the desk, lit a cigarette, and took a drag.

As the smoke cleared, he saw Nia more clearly.

Nia's brown hair cascaded over her shoulders. She wore a lime green tank top that highlighted her smooth skin. She had on very short shorts and high-heeled sandals that made her legs look long.

Walter suddenly remembered the night they left her village. She walked ahead with a flashlight, and he carried Daniel on his back. Those legs left a deep impression on him.

Maybe working at the company had influenced Nia; she had started wearing makeup, though it was very light, almost unnoticeable. It only made her skin look better, not much different from her bare face.

Walter took another drag, his gaze lingering on her.

Nia felt a bit awkward under his scrutiny and asked again, "Walter?"

He snapped out of it, shifted his attention, and flicked the ash from his cigarette. "It's late. Why aren't you off work?"

"Walter, I noticed my paycheck seems off. Why did it suddenly become ten thousand dollars?" Nia asked timidly. She had thought about keeping the extra money but was afraid of getting caught and making a bad impression on Walter.

She had no background and an average education. She was terrified of being kicked out of the company and forced to return to her village, where her parents would pressure her to marry.

Seeing Walter remain silent, she guessed, "Was there a mistake in the payroll? If so, I'll return the money."

She spoke earnestly, and he suddenly smiled, the cigarette between his lips. "No mistake. You've been doing well lately, so you got a raise. Now go home."

So it was a raise. And they didn't even tell her in advance. What a considerate boss.

She picked up her phone and tapped the screen a few times.

Walter's phone on the desk suddenly rang. He picked it up and saw a ten-thousand-dollar transfer on WhatsApp. He accepted it.

"Walter, I only owe you 1.49 million dollars now. I've already paid you ten thousand," Nia suddenly said.

Walter looked up at her. "Are you trying to make me laugh?"

"No, I'm serious. We need to be clear about the money. If we argue about it later, it won't look good," she explained earnestly.

He looked down, seemingly replying to a message.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed. She looked down and saw the ten thousand dollars had been returned.

"I don't have to pay back the debt?" she asked, shocked.

He rubbed his head, a bit exasperated. "What are you thinking? Pay me back in full when you have enough. Do you expect me to keep track of every ten thousand dollars?"

"But I don't know when I'll ever make that much money. Aren't you afraid I'll run away?"

"Can you run away from The Taylor Group? Nia, what are you thinking?" Walter squinted, putting out his cigarette in the ashtray. "When you have enough, I'll come for it. No rush. Now go home. Don't interrupt my work."

Nia nodded and left the office.

The recent social media influencer trend was booming. The Taylor Group had collaborated with influencers, but Walter wanted to build their own team. HR was recruiting streamers and assistants to help with product selection and linking, eventually training them to become The Taylor Group's exclusive influencers.

Nia saw the job posting and noticed the salary for streamers and assistants was much higher, five thousand dollars more than her current pay.

After finishing her work, she researched the influencer industry online. She was shocked to find it was a fast way to make money. Otherwise, who knew when she'd be able to pay off 1.5 million dollars? She wanted to pay off her debt while she was still young, find a partner, and start a family.

But she didn't know what kind of candidates The Taylor Group was looking for or her chances.

The next day, during her work report, she mustered the courage to ask Walter, who was sipping coffee, "Walter, I heard The Taylor Group is hiring streamers?"

"That's right," Walter said, putting down his coffee cup and looking at his phone.

Nia continued, "What do you think about me?"

This made him look up, giving her a light glance. Nia was cute, but the influencer market favored more glamorous, camera-friendly faces. Nia's face wasn't without flaws.

The harsh words were on the tip of his tongue, but he decided there was no need to be blunt. Maybe Nia was just asking casually.

"You're great," he replied.
