Chapter 40 Breathing Becomes Difficult
The cold wind slapped Margaret's face like a mean punch, cutting into her skin.
The pain made her numb.
The wind was so fierce that she could barely catch her breath.
Her long, slender fingers, clutching a fancy cake box, were totally numb. Margaret trudged through the snow, moving slow.
The ground crunched loudly under her boots.
Took her ten minutes to get to Eldoria.
Now, with snow dumping down, Eldoria was a ghost town, covered in a big blanket of white.
The vibe was heavy, like a weight on her chest.
Margaret looked around but saw no one.
The snow was coming down harder, sticking to her lashes.
Not far off, there was an abandoned car, no plates.
The car was buried in snow, only the wipers were still going, swiping away the flakes.
Ashley was inside the car. She could see Margaret in the distance.
But Margaret couldn't see her.
Suddenly, her phone rang.
Ashley picked up her phone, barely any juice left, and swiped to answer.
Sarah snapped, "Ashley, what are you waiting for? Why haven't you started yet?
"Do you think I'm joking with you? Answer me! When are you gonna do it? Give me a straight answer!"
Sarah's voice blasted through the phone, making Ashley wince.
Ashley looked at the familiar figure in the snow, her voice eerily calm. "She's already here."
Sarah pushed. "Then hurry up and do it!"
Ashley asked, "Do we really have to do this? What did she do to you that you gotta kill her?"
Sarah snapped, "Ashley, don't forget; it's her fault you're in this mess. If you don't do it today, I'll go after Emily!"
Sarah kept going, "Should I strangle her, sell her to traffickers, or sell all her organs?"
Ashley gritted her teeth, tears streaming down her face, and growled, "Sarah, you'll be a parent someday too. Aren't you scared of karma?"
Sarah coldly said, "I've already found out that Emily's organs can sell for a million bucks. She looks young but can fetch that much money."
"Since you're so soft-hearted, let your daughter pay the price for you! That's it, I'm hanging up!" Sarah said coldly and was about to hang up.
Ashley broke down and cried. "No, don't hurt Emily! I'll do it! I've already lured Margaret to Eldoria. I bought an abandoned car. In less than half an hour, you'll see the news!"
"Make sure you do it clean. If you leave any evidence that ties back to me, you'll regret it!" After saying that, Sarah hung up.
Ashley collapsed onto the steering wheel, crying in despair.
The phone's screensaver was a photo of Emily.
After crying herself out, she deleted her call records with Sarah.
She sent a message to Margaret and turned off her phone.
She wiped her tears and looked at Margaret's figure in the storm.
She thought, 'I'm sorry, Mrs. Hughes.'
Margaret stood in the cold wind, the snow heavy and the wind biting, howling around her.
She had no idea that she had just received a message on her phone.
Strangely, she hadn't seen any sign of Ashley. She was already frozen stiff.
Margaret thought, 'Ashley probably won't come. But that was good; I can be at ease.'
What a pity about the birthday cake, though. She didn't get to give it to her.
Margaret was about to turn to leave when a loud bang echoed.
