Chapter 557 When You Slept, You Used a Condom, Right?
The words hit her like a ton of bricks, leaving her mind completely blank.
The first time with Daniel, he didn't use protection.
It couldn't be that coincidental, could it?
Lyric preferred to take things step by step. If she got pregnant, it would throw all her plans into chaos.
"Did Daniel use a condom when you two had sex?" her friend's probing question snapped her back to reality.
She had forgotten to take the morning-after pill, inexperienced and not giving it much thought.
Clutching her phone nervously, she changed the subject. "Don't say such things. Nothing happened."
"You should go to the hospital and get checked out. Did you hear me? Don't take it lightly."
"What did you find out?" Lyric pressed.
Her friend chuckled. "Daniel's life has been tougher than we thought. He grew up with his mother, who was a maid at The Taylor Villa. His father took advantage of her when he was drunk and then kicked her out."
She continued, "Daniel had a rough childhood, always poor and friendless. He was bullied and isolated. If Cade's wife and child hadn't died in a car accident, leaving him alone, Daniel would still be struggling. Kids from such backgrounds often have psychological issues, but Daniel turned out to be quite resilient. He was always the top student. After college, he became a narcotics officer, taking on the most dangerous missions. Even without The Taylor Group, he's a remarkable person."
Lyric knew he was an illegitimate child and had a tough life, but she hadn't realized his childhood was so tragic. She bit her lip, feeling a pang of sympathy. "I see."
He must feel so insecure.
He must need someone to warm his heart.
"By the way, Daniel is a very upright guy. I found out he's been helping a woman named Margaret, arranging several surgeries for her with David. They're not related, yet he's been so helpful."
"Do you think he likes Margaret?" Lyric latched onto the key point.
Her friend said, "I thought so too, but it turns out we were overthinking it. Margaret is married to Raymond. They've had a tumultuous relationship, getting divorced and then remarried. Margaret is pregnant now, due any day. Their relationship isn't complicated; Margaret is his sister. Daniel helps her, and Raymond has rewarded him for it."
Lyric's anxiety eased when she heard this.
So Daniel has a sister. If she's his sister, there's nothing to worry about.
Besides, their first time together was also his first time. He was so inexperienced; it couldn't have been faked.
Daniel likes her, Lyric. Margaret has nothing to do with it.
When Lyric mentioned going to the grocery store to buy ingredients to cook dinner for Daniel, her friend on the other end of the line was surprised. "Lyric, you're just dating. You don't need to cook for him. You've never even cooked for your parents."
"We're in a relationship. Why worry about such things? If you like someone, you should be willing to give. I want to do this for him."
At the grocery store, Lyric pushed a cart, placing each item from her list into it one by one.
Her friend continued on the phone, "I'm telling you, Lyric, don't be too good to him. Do you think he'll be moved by that? He'll just take control of you. You should make him do things for you. Be a bit aloof, don't undervalue yourself."
"You're right."
"Don't just brush me off. By the way, when do you plan to tell him about your real identity?"
Lyric grabbed a bag and carefully placed the neatly arranged peppers inside. "I'll wait. I want to tell him when our relationship is stable, maybe when we're talking about marriage."
"That's a good idea. You never know if he's after your family's wealth. This way is safer."
After hanging up, Lyric bought a lot of things, carrying several bags. She used her own card to pay.
Back at the apartment, she drank a glass of water and couldn't help but wonder what kind of person Margaret was. What did she look like, being Daniel's sister?
She picked up her phone and searched online.
Margaret's photos popped up.
Lyric clicked on one.
Margaret was in a wedding dress, leaning on Daniel's back.
He was carrying her down the stairs.
The media headline read: #Taylor Group Boss Plays Brother-of-the-Bride Role in Emotional Send-Off.
So Margaret's wedding was just a few days ago, coinciding with the day Daniel got drunk and she picked him up.
That was when they ended up sleeping together.
Lyric clicked on other articles.
Margaret was beautiful, a daughter of a prominent family. She and Raymond had been through a lot.
There were even news stories about Raymond's hair turning white overnight, thinking Margaret had died.
With such a loving relationship, there was no way Daniel could interfere.
She had been overthinking it.
Lyric's tension gradually eased.
She tied on an apron and went to the kitchen to prepare the vegetables, following an online tutorial.
She thought, she should be good to Daniel. His journey must have been so difficult. She wished to envelop him with her passionate heart, providing him with a sense of security.
No wonder he had asked her to promise not to give up on him, no matter what.
From his perspective, it must be hard for him to trust in a close relationship. If he started one, he wouldn't want it to end.
Lyric carefully chopped the vegetables, but the knife slipped, cutting into her delicate finger.
A sharp pain and a rush of blood made her wince. She quickly turned on the faucet to rinse the blood from her finger.
She took a photo of her injured finger and sent it to Daniel: "Look, I cut my hand while cooking for you."
Then she put down her phone and continued chopping.
He would feel sorry for her, be moved, and call to comfort her, right?
But Lyric was destined to be disappointed.
She waited for days and nights, but Daniel never replied.
Meanwhile, Daniel had set Lyric's WhatsApp to Do Not Disturb, so he had no idea she was hurt.
In the middle of a meeting, his phone rang.
It was Margaret.
A flash of surprise and joy crossed his face. He picked up the phone, paused the meeting, and walked out of the room, answering as he went. "Margaret."
"Daniel, are you free? Are you busy right now?" Margaret's weak voice came through the phone. "Can you come to my house and take me to the hospital? I think I'm going into labor."
