Chapter 216 You'll Find Out Sooner or Later
Margaret was hunched over, wracked with pain from the cancer flare-up.
Raymond kissed her for a bit before letting her go.
"As long as you behave and listen, Marlon can wake up sooner." Raymond saw her unease, a flicker of pity in his eyes as he reached out to pat her head.
Raymond looked so lazy, like he was dealing with a pet.
Margaret gave a bitter smile. To him, she was just a pet at best.
When Raymond was in a good mood, he'd ease her worries. When he was in a bad mood, he'd ignore her pain. She probably wasn't even as good as a pet to him.
Raymond even had more compassion for the parrot, feeding it after she left.
When Margaret got back from a dangerous trip to Silverwood, she saw the parrot had actually gained weight. It showed he had some sympathy.
But Raymond's kindness was never for Margaret. They were supposed to be husband and wife. He had promised to be good to her forever, and she had foolishly believed him.
Because of Margaret's mistake, she dragged down the entire Hughes Family and her parents' happiness. She wasn't even as good as that lively parrot.
Margaret felt a deep sadness. She looked at Raymond, blinking her sore eyes. He had lied to her so many times; he always went back on his word. But she had no choice but to believe him.
How pathetic, in Margaret's more than twenty years of life, she didn't even have a single friend. She used to have good friends, but when Sarah joined them and sowed discord, they drifted apart. Margaret ignored her friends' advice and insisted on dating and marrying Raymond. Her friends were so angry they left the country.
Margaret had sent invitations to her friends, but they didn't even want to come to her wedding. It was her own foolishness that harmed herself. So Margaret realized that the situation had spiraled out of control, and she had no one to blame but herself for being foolish.
Raymond thought she hadn't heard him because Margaret's eyes were filled with doubt and confusion. He repeated what he had just said, thinking he was reassuring her.
But Margaret still had doubts in her heart and asked him, "Really?" Raymond nodded.
Margaret had no other choice but to believe Raymond.
Margaret said with a weary smile, "Okay, I'll be good. I want to sleep alone tonight."
Raymond said, "Why?"
"I have a cold," Margaret said, though the real reason was her illness flaring up. "I don't want to infect you."
Seeing her concern for him, Raymond rarely smiled.
Margaret's heart tightened even more. Was he so happy to see her unwell?
After Raymond left, Margaret staggered down from the bed, not even wearing slippers, and locked the master bedroom door barefoot.
Margaret picked up the handbag next to the sofa, her fingers trembling as she unzipped it. Taking out the unmarked painkillers, she unscrewed the cap and poured them into her mouth, swallowing them dry, handful after handful, until the pain in her body was completely suppressed.
Margaret then picked up the pills scattered on the floor, threw them into the trash can. She didn't want Raymond to find out and gloat.
They were just a transaction now, nothing more. No matter how much was said, it was useless if things couldn't be done. For example, Raymond's wish for her to die.
Raymond boiled some water and poured it into a glass. He grabbed some cold medicine from the first aid kit and headed to the master bedroom door, juggling the medicine and hot water in one hand while trying to turn the doorknob with the other.
It wouldn't budge; the door was locked.
Raymond felt a bit annoyed. 'Does she really reject me that much? I just left for a minute, and she already locked the door?' But he didn't argue, just knocked on the door. No answer.
"If your cold is that bad, I'll take you to the hospital," Raymond finally said.
Still no response.
"Are you asleep?" he asked again.
Margaret must have fallen asleep; otherwise, why wouldn't she answer?
Raymond suddenly felt like a clown, performing a one-man show.
She really turned her back on him quickly. Just a moment ago, she was in his arms, begging him to find a way to wake Marlon up.
As soon as he agreed, she immediately became cold and ignored him.
If it were the old him, he would have used the spare key to open the door and see what she was really doing.
Whether she was really asleep or pretending, he didn't dare to act rashly now because they were already too estranged.
If it weren't for the arrival of this child, they would probably continue to torment each other, loving and hating each other.
Raymond wasn't someone who acted without considering the consequences. As long as she behaved and gave birth to this child, she would have everything.
Today Margaret could act spoiled with him, ask him for help, which was a good sign.
Raymond tightened his grip on the glass and medicine, turned back to the living room, and sat on the sofa. His throat suddenly hurt, like he had swallowed a blade.
Just now in the bathroom, the sudden change in temperature gave him a cold. He took the pills from the blister pack, put them in his mouth, and drank the hot water from the glass, letting the capsules slide into his stomach.
Raymond put down the glass and pinched the bridge of his nose.
He finally picked up the phone and called Alvin. He said into the phone, "Tell Mr. Diaz to use the best medicine and make sure Marlon wakes up in the next few days."
"Mr. Howard, you finally came around. Mrs. Howard will be happy to know," Alvin said happily.
Not long after the call ended, Hubert's call came, asking incredulously, "Mr. Howard, Alvin said to use the best medicine and make sure Mr. Hughes wakes up in the next few days? Did he get the message wrong?"
"What do you think he should have said? Let Marlon die?" Raymond sneered.
Hubert quickly corrected himself, saying, "No, Mr. Howard. I just found it a bit surprising. Isn't he your enemy? Why are you suddenly being so kind and letting him go?"
"I warn you, if Marlon doesn't wake up within three days, you won't need to stay in your current position. There are plenty of people who can get the job done." Raymond threatened.
Hubert, to keep his job, had no choice but to agree.
Sarah's call suddenly came in, asking what he had been busy with lately and why he hadn't contacted her.
Hubert said, "Raymond gave me a task, and I need to complete it quickly."
"What task?" Sarah asked curiously.
Hubert knew her personality. If she found out he was trying to wake Marlon, she would definitely try to stop him. So he had to keep it from her.
"You'll find out sooner or later," Hubert said evasively.
