Chapter 586 Della is a Gold Digger
Daniel returned to Silverbrook, just getting back home.
He saw Cade, sitting at the kitchen counter, sipping from a mug of coffee. Cade looked at the exhausted Daniel and sneered, "Back already? Had enough fun?"
Daniel didn't even glance at him and turned to head upstairs.
"Once you've had your fill, you'll go to Regal City for the arranged marriage in a few days!" Cade ordered.
Daniel scoffed, "If you're so eager, why don't you go for me? Maybe they'll like you better."
No one had ever spoken to Cade like that. He couldn't stay seated any longer, slamming his coffee mug down on the counter with a loud thud. The force of the impact caused the mug to crack, and a splash of hot coffee splattered onto the floor, narrowly missing Daniel but staining the hem of his black jeans.
Daniel turned around to see Cade pointing a finger at him, furious. "Daniel, how dare you talk to me like that! I try to talk sense into you, and you don't listen? You went looking for that woman, didn't you? Did she even acknowledge you? I bet you didn't even see her."
"How do you know that?" Daniel narrowed his eyes, sensing something was off.
Cade snorted, laughing derisively. "Not only do I know you didn't see her, I know the address was fake. All of Della's information was fabricated, including her identity. Daniel, you're my son, and you still can't see through this? Della came into your life with the sole purpose of extorting you! Losing the baby played right into her hands. Her goal was to exploit your soft heart and latch onto the Taylor Family!"
He continued, "Her tactics were just too amateurish. You're simple-minded, but I'm not. Her little tricks can't fool me. I've seen all kinds of people in my life. Some women use their looks to target the sons of businessmen. You're not as smart as your brother. He grew up by my side, and I trained him well. He doesn't get distracted by women. He's a true business genius. Your mother was just an ordinary woman, a fool. The son she bore and raised is just as foolish. Haven't you noticed that people like your mother never end well? People like me, who prioritize profit and treat women as disposable, are the ones who thrive."
As Cade reminisced about his past glories, his lips curled into a smug smile.
Daniel felt disgusted seeing him like this. "Too bad he's dead. You've done so much evil in your life, and now your wife and children are paying the price. You still don't reflect on that."
"You!" Cade's expression changed, glaring at him.
He was trembling with rage. If he weren't so old, he would have beaten Daniel to death.
The assistant, trying to calm him down, frowned disapprovingly. "Mr. Daniel Taylor, Mr. Cade Taylor is still your father. Speaking to him like that is wrong. And Della isn't as good as you think. She only agreed to leave you after Mr. Cade Taylor gave her a five-million-dollar check."
"What did you say?" Daniel was stunned. Della had taken a five-million-dollar check from Cade?
Cade smirked disdainfully. "Now you see what kind of person she is? Her motive for getting close to you was simple—money and extortion! She took my money and naturally wouldn't dare show her face to you again. Otherwise, I'd have her jailed for extortion!"
"You think your love is worth much? A mere five million dollars, and she sold you out! Take a few days to rest. Next Monday, you'll meet your arranged match. That's the woman you should marry! No matter how bad I am, it's only to outsiders! Behind closed doors, you're still my child! I'm paving the way for your future!"
"You didn't grow up by my side, so you don't understand that business is war. Your chivalrous heart is a liability. From my perspective, you need a strong family alliance to support you. After I'm gone, you'll need that backing."
"What can Della offer you? Love and affection are fleeting. I'm speaking from experience. Even if you marry, love fades. It's not that I'm heartless; I just see that you and Della have no future. Even if I let you be together, once the passion fades, you'll realize Della has nothing to offer but her looks. Forcing together people from different classes is painful."
"Della might feel inferior, thinking you look down on her. You'll feel wronged, having given up better options for her. Even if you don't divorce, you'll become a resentful couple! The woman I've chosen for you is truly suitable! Arranging your marriage and securing your position as the Taylor Family heir is the only way I can rest easy and die in peace, knowing our family legacy won't be ruined by you!"
Daniel stood there, dazed, listening to Cade's long-winded speech.
He was in a fog, unable to process it all.
The voice of betrayal echoed in his mind.
"Della took a five-million-dollar check from us."
He didn't even know when Della had left.
Daniel muttered to himself, "Five million dollars, and she was gone. Della, are you really that kind of person? But marrying me would be worth far more than five million dollars. Does being my wife not even compare to five million?"
Daniel pressed his lips together, expressionless, as he walked out of the house.
By now, the roses had withered.
The sunlight on them was glaring.
He had once planted those roses for Margaret.
The butler approached, squinting with a cheerful smile. "Mr. Taylor, something on your mind?"
"No," he replied in a low voice.
The butler smiled at him. "But Mr. Taylor, you look troubled. Clearly, something's bothering you. Mr. Taylor, you shouldn't live your life based on others' words. It will only make you very tired. Would you like to hear my story?"
Daniel looked at him, puzzled.
The butler stroked his graying beard, his expression distant as he reminisced. "Many years ago, when I was about your age, I also fell in love with a girl. My family was well-off, one of the wealthier ones in our small town. The girl I loved was the daughter of our servant. She was willing to elope with me, to be with me forever."
"Your family didn't approve?" Daniel guessed the rest and asked.
