Chapter 527 Through the Respirator Mask, Kissed Her Lips

Margaret gazed at the scattered stars and changed the subject. "Let's get our marriage license tomorrow, Daniel. You're a good guy, and I believe you'll be a great husband. You'll treat me well for a lifetime and never make me cry. I'll do my best to be a good wife, to fall in love with you quickly, and to return your deep affection. Don't worry, I'll forget about Raymond as soon as I can."

She fell in love with him quickly and reciprocated his deep affection; it sounded so beautiful.

Daniel's lips pressed into a thin line. If he could be selfish and not stop this, Margaret would truly become his wife.

But he couldn't be that selfish. Margaret wouldn't be happy with him; she would see falling in love with him as a task.

In the time they'd spent together, he was already content to be her boyfriend.

"Daniel?" Margaret looked at him, puzzled by his silence.

He kept walking, knowing this was the last time he'd walk her home.

Thankfully, the night was dark enough that she couldn't see the struggle and conflict on his face.

He stopped and looked up at her. "Margaret."

"What is it?"

"This is where it ends. Let's just be friends from now on," Daniel said with a bitter smile.

Margaret looked at him, confused.

They crossed the street, the cold wind rustling the leaves.

"Marriage needs love. It can't be used to repay a debt."

"I'll work hard to love you," Margaret thought he misunderstood. "I won't see Raymond anymore."

Daniel forced himself to say, "It's not about Raymond; it's my problem."

"What problem?"

"After spending this time together, I realized my feelings for you aren't romantic. We're more suited to be siblings," Daniel said, glancing at her.

He saw her visibly relax.

It seemed he was making the right decision.

"So, Margaret, go find Raymond. We're broken up now, and you have nothing to worry about."

"Margaret, this is the last time I'll walk you home. Take care. Be happy. I'm looking forward to your wedding with Raymond."

Margaret saw how serious he was and didn't argue. She wished him well, too. "You're such a good person; you'll definitely find a girl who's perfect for you. Someone pure and who loves you passionately."

"I hope so, too."

He watched Margaret enter The Hughes Manor.

Sitting in his car, he didn't leave right away.

Twenty minutes later.

Daniel lit a cigarette. It was his first time smoking, and it was harsh.

He coughed, tears streaming down his face.

He saw Margaret drive away.

He knew she was going to find Raymond.

Everything was back on track.

Daniel thought to himself, 'Margaret, you know, my greatest love is you. There won't be anyone else, but that's okay. Love is about mutual willingness, and it can't be forced. As long as you're happy.'

These few days were beautiful memories, enough for Daniel to cherish for a lifetime.

At the hospital.

It was late.

The hallways were empty.

Rufus wasn't at the hospital anymore.

After asking a nurse, Margaret learned that Raymond had been moved from the ICU to a regular room.

She walked in his room.

The room was pitch black, not a single light.

She flicked the switch on the wall, and the room lit up instantly.

She walked to the bed.

Raymond lay there in a hospital gown, hooked up to various machines, his face covered by a breathing mask.

His thin hands lay on the white sheets.

Margaret pulled up a chair and sat by the bed.

He showed no signs of waking.

She had once hated him so much, but seeing him like this, unconscious, she felt no satisfaction from revenge.

Her emotions were an intricate web—oppressive, suffocating, and bewildering.

She wondered, 'Raymond, what should I do with you? I can't get over it, but I can't just watch you die. If you die, how boring will my life be? I won't even have someone to hate.'

The next day.

Rufus came to the room, surprised and happy to see Margaret. After some small talk, he got to the point. "Ms. Hughes, Raymond's condition has been worsening. He needs to wake up soon. You should talk to him about things he loves. He might not be awake, but he can hear you."

"Will that work?"

"How will you know if you don't try?"

After Rufus left.

The room was empty.

Only the sleeping Raymond remained.

And the anxious Margaret.

"Raymond, it's Margaret. Stop sleeping and wake up." When she looked at his pale, bloodless face, her throat tightened painfully. "I didn't marry Daniel. Did you do this on purpose? Did you get into an accident to stop me from marrying someone else? Raymond, you succeeded. Wake up and live well. Someone as bad as you dying like this is too easy. We've been through so much together. You dying like this is unacceptable. I broke up with Daniel. Stop pretending, Raymond. Open your eyes and look at me."

As Margaret thought about the past, her eyes stung and tears fell uncontrollably. She was angry at Raymond and herself.

He had done so many terrible things, yet she still couldn't let go.

If she couldn't let go, then she would continue to be entangled with him, until they were old, until they died.

This was their fate, and she accepted it.

He would live and make it up to her, give her happiness.

She said so many things, things she should and shouldn't say.

Raymond had no reaction.

Margaret got angry, crying and shouting, "Raymond, stop pretending and wake up! If you dare to die, I'll really marry someone else! I'll kiss him! Sleep with him! Have children with him! I'll get a dog and name it Raymond! I'll completely forget you! Your voice, your face, your breath, I'll forget it all!"

Raymond suddenly coughed a few times.

His long, beautiful eyes opened suddenly, and with a cold hand, he pulled Margaret close. "No. Margaret, I won't let you forget me, I won't let you marry anyone else. You are mine. You will always be my wife."

Until death, she would never escape his spell.

Margaret was pulled into his arms. Even in his weakened state, he was still strong.

Through the breathing mask, he kissed her lips.
