Chapter 616 You Promised to Marry Me, How Can You Go Back on Your Word?
Zephyr was visibly upset by Lyric's threat.
He didn't expect Remy to jump in as well.
His face darkened even more. He was furious. After all these years of ups and downs together, it seemed he was less important than an outsider.
Remy turned to Lyric and said, "Lyric, don't worry about him. I'm on your side. I've decided that Daniel is the right guy for you. He saved my life, so there's no way he's a bad person. Once he's better, I'll give you your passport, and you two can get married. Your passport is with me anyway. Worst case, I'll move to Silverbrook with you and Daniel. Let someone else grow old alone. Look at him, acting all high and mighty."
This statement brought mixed reactions.
"Thanks, Mom."
"You're my precious daughter. Of course, I'll help you. Husbands can be replaced, but a daughter is one of a kind. Come on, get up." Remy helped Lyric up from the floor.
Zephyr, now laughing out of sheer frustration, looked at the two who had turned against him. "Fine, do whatever you want. I don't care anymore."
With that, he turned and left the hospital.
Lyric was a bit worried, but Remy patted her hand reassuringly. "Don't worry. Your dad is all talk. He's already given in. Leave him to me. I know my husband better than anyone. I promise this won't delay your wedding."
"Thanks, Mom."
"The priest was right; you two are meant to be together," Remy sighed.
Lyric looked at the door of the emergency room and silently thought, 'Daniel, did you hear that? My family has agreed. As long as you come out of that room safe and sound, we can get married. We can be together forever. I've prepared so much for you, so you have to pull through.'
And the baby... She had poked holes in the condoms a while back. She wondered if she was pregnant.
"Can we eat now?" Remy handed her the food she had bought.
Lyric, her head bowed and eyes filled with tears, ate all the food. She wasn't hungry at all, but she was afraid she might collapse before Daniel came out.
That wasn't the outcome she wanted.
At 7 PM, the door to the emergency room suddenly opened.
Daniel was wheeled out.
Lyric quickly stood up and rushed over to the doctor. "Doctor, how is my husband?"
"He's alive."
With those words, the weight on Lyric's heart finally lifted.
Remy was also relieved. "I told you, good people are blessed. He'll be fine."
"No, I'm not finished. The patient was stabbed in the heart and is now in a vegetative state," the doctor sighed.
Lyric staggered back a few steps, supported by Remy.
A vegetative state.
Daniel had become a vegetable.
How ironic. She had convinced her family, and they were finally ready to get married.
She thought there were no more obstacles, but now he was in a vegetative state!
Remy quickly asked the doctor, "Is there any treatment?"
"Not at the moment."
"When will he wake up?" Remy pressed.
The doctor looked complicated. "It's hard to say. It could be tomorrow, next year, or he might never wake up."
Remy was stunned.
The doctor looked at them with pity. "Don't get your hopes up. It's a miracle he's even alive."
After the doctor left, Lyric's fingers, held by Remy, trembled. She cried and asked Remy, "Mom, tell me I misheard. Daniel won't be a vegetable. He'll wake up soon, right?"
"Lyric—" Remy, seeing her daughter like this, also started to cry.
"Mom, tell me this isn't real. We haven't even gotten married yet. How could he become a vegetable? He loves me so much; this can't be happening." Lyric clutched Remy's shoulders, her eyes red with emotion.
Remy tried to comfort her. "Lyric, calm down. The doctor said he might wake up tomorrow. He's a good person, and good things happen to good people."
But the last shred of hope was gone.
Would he wake up tomorrow?
No.
The doctor said it could be tomorrow, next year, or never. The chances were slim.
Her hands fell from Remy's shoulders.
She let out a bitter laugh.
"Lyric, you have to stay strong. You can't fall apart. Please, stay calm," Remy cried, holding her hand.
Lyric pulled her hand away and wiped her tears. "I need to see him."
It had been so long since she last saw him. She had to see him.
Lyric slowly turned and walked towards the hospital room. Her steps were unsteady, as if she were walking on cotton, almost tripping.
Remy called out for her to be careful, and Lyric's fingers caught the cold railing just in time.
The distance to Daniel's room wasn't far, but it felt like it took all her energy.
Every step was exhausting.
She didn't dare walk too fast, afraid it was all real.
So she walked slowly.
Just like their love story, every step was careful and deliberate, but fate always had unexpected twists.
If she had known, she would have married him the first time they met.
Instead of waiting and dreaming.
She reached the door to his room.
Her slender fingers touched the door handle. She took a deep breath, hesitant to push it open.
But then she thought, this was the only man she had ever loved. He was lying in that bed because of her family. How could she not see him?
She pushed the door open with all her strength.
The room was very dark.
There were sounds from the machines, red lights blinking on and off.
She turned on the light switch on the wall.
The room suddenly lit up.
She saw him clearly, lying in the bed, surrounded by machines.
She thought she was seeing things. She rubbed her eyes and looked again. It was the same scene.
She walked towards him, step by step, just like he had once walked towards her with determination.
Her eyes were dry, and she reached out to touch his pale face. But her fingers wouldn't stop trembling, and her eyes filled with tears.
Tears fell on her hand, wet and warm.
She touched his face. It was cold.
She never imagined that after their last meeting, their reunion would be like this.
"It's so unfair. You promised to marry me. How could you break your promise? You went to buy milk tea and ended up in the hospital."
