Chapter 211 Will Turn into Stars in the Sky to Bless You
Margaret stared at Daniel, completely taken aback. "Wait, you're offering to donate a liver for me?"
Daniel just smiled softly. "Why not?"
"But we've barely known each other. This feels... wrong." Margaret's arms dropped from her chest, her hands now resting on her knees, fingers clenching nervously.
Raymond locked eyes with her, his tone serious. "Even if we'd only met today, I'd still help you. Ms. Hughes, helping people was the first thing I learned when I joined the police force. Just because I'm not in uniform anymore doesn't mean I've changed."
Margaret knew Daniel was a beloved officer, always on the front lines, saving those in need. Just like when Ashley was dying, or when Margaret was kneeling in the blizzard, surrounded by onlookers and reported by the media, it was he who came to her rescue.
And when she was tormented by the photos of Sarah and Raymond in bed, it was Daniel who answered her call. Every time, he was there like a warm ray of sunshine when she needed help the most.
But she never imagined Daniel would offer to help her with a liver transplant. Margaret thought, 'Do I really deserve this?' She fell silent. Daniel assumed she was considering his offer and didn't interrupt.
Margaret noticed they were nearing Raymond's villa, just one bus stop away. She remembered Raymond's warning: if he saw her getting too close to Daniel, he wouldn't hesitate to go after him. She couldn't let kind-hearted Daniel be put in danger.
Margaret asked Daniel to drop her off at the bus stop. He understood and didn't want to trouble her; he just wanted to give her a ride.
Daniel didn't want to be seen by Raymond either. So he had the driver pull over. Margaret thanked him and was about to open the door.
"Think about my offer, Ms. Hughes. Don't give up on yourself." His words made her pause.
Margaret looked back at him and smiled. She wanted to leave Daniel with a beautiful smile, even though behind it, she felt broken.
"Mr. Taylor, thank you for your kindness. I really appreciate it, but I don't need it," Margaret said with a bitter smile.
Daniel thought she was refusing and was about to speak. She continued, "The doctor told me today that my body can't handle such a major surgery. Even if I wanted a liver transplant, I couldn't have it."
"Ms. Hughes," Daniel hesitated, his eyes filled with concern.
Margaret smiled, trying to comfort him. "Don't worry about me. I've known about my terminal cancer for a while now. I've accepted it. Mr. Taylor, you have a bright future. Don't waste your time on someone like me."
"Work hard, live your life. Even if I die tomorrow, I'll be a star in the sky, blessing you with peace. So don't worry about me. It's not worth it. Thank you for bringing me back today. Let's not meet again." Margaret wanted to say "see you next time," but she didn't want to drag Daniel into her mess.
Raymond torturing her was enough; she couldn't let him involve Daniel too.
"I don't get it, why does Raymond treat you like this?" Daniel finally asked the question that had been on his mind for a long time.
Margaret was momentarily stunned, unsure if she should tell him. Then she figured, with each meeting being one less, it wouldn't hurt to spill the beans.
Margaret sighed and gave a bitter smile. "Mr. Taylor, there's no such thing as absolute love or hate in this world. Raymond feels the same way about me."
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked, clearly puzzled.
Margaret smiled and asked, "If your parents died indirectly because of your wife's father, would you blame your wife?"
Daniel didn't answer. Margaret continued, "Raymond hates me for that reason. So I don't blame him; I owe him."
"Have you ever thought that Mr. Hughes' car accident might have been his doing?" Daniel asked again.
Margaret was momentarily stunned. Raymond wanted to send Marlon to prison but lacked evidence, so he didn't act. He only managed to send Percy in. Percy did commit a crime, which was why he was imprisoned.
With Raymond's current status, it would be easy for him to frame Marlon and send him to prison. He didn't do that, proving his character wasn't bad.
The perpetrator of Marlon's car accident was still at large, with no leads. Margaret wanted to investigate, but now she no longer had the energy.
Margaret thought of this and said in a pleading tone, "Mr. Taylor, I believe it wasn't Raymond. He's not that kind of person. But the driver who caused my father's accident is still at large. Can you find someone to help me investigate? I didn't want to trouble you, but now I can't protect myself."
Daniel nodded. "But I can't guarantee immediate results."
"It's okay. As long as he's caught, I can see it from heaven," Margaret said, then opened the car door. A cold wind blew in, scattering her hair. Then she closed the car door.
Not far away, a black Bentley was parked by the roadside. Raymond stared through the tightly closed window at Margaret, who had just gotten out of Daniel's car.
No wonder she told him to leave; she had gone to meet Daniel again. She was already carrying his child. Couldn't she behave? Raymond's face was ashen.
Alvin observed his expression and said, "Mr. Howard, Mrs. Howard is pregnant and shouldn't be too tired. Should I drive over and ask her to get in the car?"
"You like her? Want to take my place?" Raymond gave him a cold, sharp look.
Alvin quickly replied, "Mr. Howard, you must be joking. I'm already married; how could I dare to covet Mrs. Howard?"
Raymond said coldly, "Then why aren't you driving? What are you waiting for?" Alvin quickly drove away.
Margaret didn't notice Raymond's car passing by her. She walked back to the apartment, changed into slippers at the entrance, feeling uneasy, and glanced at the shoe cabinet. Raymond's slippers were there, indicating he hadn't returned. She sighed in relief.
Then she walked up the spiral staircase. She didn't know why, but with each step, her breathing grew heavier, feeling like something was about to happen. But she didn't know what it would be. Her eyelids kept twitching.
At the top of the stairs, Margaret saw that all the lights in the living room were on, as bright as day.
Raymond had taken off his suit jacket, wearing only a white shirt. Perhaps the central air conditioning in the house was at a comfortable temperature, so he had rolled up his sleeves to his elbows, revealing his straight and sexy muscle lines.
The hem of his shirt was perfectly tucked into his black trousers. Raymond hadn't changed his shoes either. He stared at her with piercing eyes, as if he had been waiting there to catch her doing something wrong.
