Chapter 279 No Tears When Sad
Margaret kept pleading with Nancy, "Hold on a little longer, just a little longer. We're almost at the hospital. Once we get there, you can be treated."
Nancy nodded with difficulty.
To keep Nancy from falling asleep, and from closing her eyes, Margaret tearfully started telling Nancy jokes.
The jokes were actually very funny, but Margaret couldn't laugh; in fact, as she told them, tears streamed down her face.
Nancy cooperated as well. Hearing Margaret's jokes, trying to make herself laugh, she forced a smile, showing Margaret a faint grin.
Listening to the jokes, Nancy suddenly felt very tired.
Her whole body became exhausted, so much so that keeping her eyes open took all her strength.
It felt like there was a stone weight on her eyelids, burdensome.
Nancy's vision began to blur, making it hard to focus.
Looking at Margaret in front of her, she saw multiple Margarets.
She searched for a long time but couldn't find where Margaret was.
Nancy's mind flashed back to Marlon's younger days.
It was over twenty years ago; that day was also snowing heavily.
Marlon was still a poor young man back then, not yet the founder of the Hughes Group.
She wanted to be with Marlon, but her family opposed it.
So she stole her driver's license and met Marlon at the Municipal Office.
Marlon wore a suit, looking very ceremonious. The heavy snow suddenly lightened, and the dark clouds seemed to be parted by a giant hand.
The golden sun shone through the clouds, illuminating the falling snowflakes, and shone on the gentle and elegant Marlon.
That day, she wore a pink dress that accentuated her perfect and sexy figure.
She called out, "Marlon."
He reached out his hand to her, and her hand, bathed in sunlight, looked as if it were gilded.
She placed her hand in his; his hand was broad and warm, giving her an inexplicable sense of security.
They went to the Municipal Office.
The staff who processed their marriage certificate said they were a perfect match.
The two of them stood at the entrance of the Municipal Office, holding hands happily, stepping on the thick snow, under the gentle sunlight, facing the white snowflakes.
Marlon carefully pinched her chin with his big hand.
As he leaned in, her heart started racing, and his warm lips covered hers.
Suddenly, the beautiful scene vanished; Nancy saw Marlon on the balcony, being pushed down by Raymond.
Marlon, wearing the clothes he died in, lay in her arms, covered in blood.
Nancy cried almost to the point of suffocation.
After a while, she heard Marlon calling her name.
Somehow, he had turned back into his younger self, but he was wearing the clothes he died in.
The clothes were clean, without any bloodstains.
He walked towards her with a warm and gentle smile, just like when they first met.
"Come with me," Marlon said, holding her hand, his voice deep.
In the car, Margaret saw the car stop at the entrance of Silverbrook Hospital, which was Raymond's hospital.
She excitedly lowered her eyelids and said to Nancy, whose eyes were almost completely closed, "Mom, we're at the hospital. Hold on!"
Alvin was parking the car.
Margaret heard Nancy, eyes closed, murmuring, "Margaret, I think I see your dad."
"Mom, you're about to be saved," Margaret said, pressing her lips together.
Nancy shook her head, "It's too late. Your dad wants me to go with him. He says he can't sleep in heaven without me."
The car door opened, and Daniel was about to lift Nancy.
Nancy's hand, which Margaret was holding, suddenly slipped from Margaret's grasp, and fell heavily onto the car's carpet.
"Mom!" Margaret grabbed Nancy's hand and shouted.
Nancy's hand had completely lost its warmth.
"Mom, wake up!!" Margaret cried out in despair, shaking Nancy continuously. "Don't scare me, Mom. Don't joke like this!"
But no matter how much Margaret cried, Nancy didn't respond.
"Mr. Taylor, please carry my mom into the hospital, quickly!" Margaret wiped her tears and hurried out of the car.
Daniel carried Nancy and quickly entered the hospital.
Hubert was on the first floor, doing his rounds.
Seeing Daniel carrying Nancy, with Margaret and Alvin following, he was a bit confused.
"Mr. Diaz, please save her quickly," Alvin requested urgently.
Hubert immediately had Daniel take Nancy to the emergency room.
After a quick examination, Hubert sighed and looked at Margaret and the others with a complex expression. "Mrs. Howard, don't be too sad. Mrs. Hughes has already passed away. She missed the best time for resuscitation."
Blinking, Margaret couldn't help but take a few steps back as her legs gave out, almost causing her to fall.
Daniel caught her. "Ms. Hughes, don't be too sad."
Since last night, people had been telling her not to be too sad.
Her parents had died in two consecutive days. How could she not be sad?
Margaret pushed away Daniel's support. "I understand. Thank you, Mr. Diaz."
"Mrs. Howard, there's no need to be polite. I suggest you take Mrs. Hughes to the crematorium for cremation as soon as possible. Otherwise, if she is left for too long, there will be corpse spots and decay. Mrs. Hughes has just passed away, so changing her clothes will be easier now." Hubert was afraid Nancy might suddenly wake up again, just like last time when Margaret had no breath but then woke up.
So he wanted Margaret to cremate Nancy as soon as possible.
Daniel carried Nancy and followed Margaret and Alvin out of the hospital.
"Ms. Hughes, are you planning to take Mrs. Hughes home or...?" Daniel asked uneasily, looking at Margaret.
Margaret didn't speak, as if she was thinking.
Alvin spoke up, "We could take Mrs. Hughes home for a few days, just in case she wakes up."
Margaret thought in her heart. 'Will Mom wake up? Probably not. Mom has gone to find Dad; she said Dad couldn't sleep without her. Dad is alone in heaven now.'
She should let her parents reunite as soon as possible.
Besides, her health was deteriorating day by day, and she would likely die in the next few days.
She couldn't delay any longer. If she died too, who would help bury Nancy?
"To the crematorium. Let them reunite," Margaret sighed.
At the crematorium, Margaret watched as Nancy was slowly consumed by the flames.
Daniel and Alvin, worried about her, insisted on staying by her side.
Margaret was expressionless. This morning, she had been here with Nancy, watching Marlon's body burn. So soon, it was Nancy's turn. When would it be her turn? Was this her fate?
She had thought that with her cancer, she would painstakingly settle her parents' affairs and then peacefully close her eyes and leave this world.
But fate took her parents away directly, leaving her with no worries.
All her efforts, all her struggles, were destroyed in just one day. Her efforts seemed so ridiculous.
The phone rang at that moment.
She looked over and saw Alvin looking down at his phone, hesitating.
"Whose call is it?" Margaret's voice was faint and weak, and she was completely drained.
Alvin pressed his lips together. "Mr. Howard."
