Chapter 509 I Will Accompany You
The office lights flickered on.
Margaret looked up.
Daniel walked in, carrying a food container.
Tall and lean, with a buzz cut, Daniel was dressed casually today, not in his usual business suit. Instead, he wore a crisp white shirt.
Long denim jeans, ripped in several places, accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist, making him look particularly handsome.
The shirt collar was open, revealing his well-defined collarbone.
Margaret rarely saw him dressed like this and was momentarily taken aback.
"Ms. Hughes, what's wrong?" He waved his large hand in front of her.
She refocused, noticing the black watch on his wrist, his skin smooth and attractive.
"Mr. Taylor, what brings you here?"
"Just bringing you some food." Daniel smiled, opening the container.
With his slender fingers, he took out the food, a balanced mix of meat and vegetables, looking very appetizing.
Margaret hadn't been hungry, but seeing the delicious food made her stomach growl. She didn't hesitate, taking the utensils he handed her and started eating. "Aren't you eating?"
"I already ate before coming."
She must have been very hungry, having worked all day without a proper meal.
"Is it that good? You're eating so fast." Daniel teased, his eyes fixed on her, smiling.
She smiled lightly. "Where did you get this? It tastes pretty good."
"If you like it, I'll get it for you next time."
Actually, he had made the nutritious meal himself, but he didn't plan to tell her. Cooking for someone he loved was a joy and an honor; he didn't need any reward or sympathy.
Margaret didn't think much of it. "Isn't it too much trouble?"
"Not at all. Helping you is in my own interest. If you clear out the internal issues at The Hughes Group and take control, it will benefit The Taylor Group too, right?"
That made sense. Under Raymond's leadership, The Hughes Group was indeed stronger than The Taylor Group.
After finishing her meal, Margaret resumed looking at documents.
Daniel cleaned up the food container and set it aside.
He made a cup of coffee and placed it next to Margaret.
Margaret thanked him and continued typing notes on her laptop for a project.
"Anything I can help with?" Daniel asked again.
Margaret looked up and smiled at him. "You've already done so much, Mr. Taylor. No need."
"Ms. Hughes, you have such a good resource here. Why not use it?"
Margaret frowned. It was the first time someone had referred to themselves like that.
"Helping you, Ms. Hughes, is to ensure better cooperation with The Hughes Group. We're partners, and I'm also a shareholder in The Hughes Group. Our success is intertwined. Do you still think using me is a hassle?"
His reasoning made sense to her.
She glanced at a tall stack of folders and looked at him. "Could you help me review these documents, Mr. Taylor? Check if there are any issues?"
"Of course, Ms. Hughes."
Daniel took the folders and moved to the office sofa.
He sat down, opened a folder, and started reviewing it seriously.
His speed was impressive, his efficiency much higher than Margaret's.
As the president of The Taylor Group, he had more experience in company management than Margaret.
Alvin passed by the president's office and saw Daniel working on the sofa and Margaret at her desk through the glass window.
Seeing such a harmonious scene, Alvin felt a mix of emotions.
He felt a bit unfair for Raymond, who had lost everything for Margaret and still hadn't found a suitable bone marrow match.
Meanwhile, Margaret seemed to be getting closer to Daniel.
If this continued, Margaret would surely end up with Daniel.
Alvin had an urge to tell Margaret that Raymond was on the brink of death.
He wanted Margaret to try a bone marrow match.
What if Margaret's bone marrow was compatible with Raymond's?
But Raymond had instructed not to disturb Margaret and Daniel's relationship.
Raymond had cut off all his options to force Margaret to leave.
Even if Margaret regained her memory, telling her now would be pointless.
Raymond was pitiful, young, having worked himself into leukemia for The Hughes Group, now left with nothing.
At that moment, Alvin's phone rang.
He quickly turned and entered the elevator, afraid Margaret would see him. He needed to check on Raymond at the hospital. Despite having a caregiver, he was still worried.
"How's Margaret doing?" Raymond coughed a few times over the phone, struggling to speak.
Was this a sign of impending death?
Alvin's tears welling up as he held the phone. "Mr. Howard, you're in such a state, and you're still worried about others?"
"Margaret isn't just anyone. She's my wife and someone you must be loyal to for life. Don't speak of her like that."
Afraid of angering Raymond, Alvin softened his tone and told him the truth.
The Hughes Group had stabilized, and Margaret was familiarizing herself with the business with Daniel's help.
Alvin mentioned they had dinner and worked together tonight, suspecting Daniel had ulterior motives in getting close to Margaret. The more he spoke, the more upset he became.
But Raymond wasn't angry or jealous. He smiled with relief. "That's good. It means everything is going according to plan."
"Good? Mrs. Howard isn't your wife anymore. She's gone. Are you delirious from illness? I've followed you for years, and I never realized you were such a fool." Alvin left the elevator, exiting The Hughes Group. The night wind was cold, bringing tears to his eyes.
If he could, he wished Raymond was still the cold-hearted man he once was, not this fool making sacrifices for others.
"Mr. Howard, I don't understand why you insist on this path. Mrs. Howard regained her memory, which doesn't benefit you. There are other ways to help her recover. Doesn't it hurt you that she hates you now? Don't you regret it?"
Raymond stood by the hospital bed, looking at the leaves blown by the wind outside the window. He thought for a moment and sighed. "I don't deserve her forgiveness. This outcome is my own doing."
"Mr. Howard—"
"Don't tell her about my condition. She hasn't secured her position at The Hughes Group yet. She can't be distracted. Follow my instructions and continue to leverage the shareholders to support Margaret."
"Understood."
"And do it discreetly. Don't let Margaret realize we're behind this."
"Then all the credit will go to Daniel?" Alvin was shocked. Raymond kept surprising him. Could Raymond really be this selfless for Margaret he loved?
Alvin found himself unable to do so.
"Even if Mrs. Howard knew, she wouldn't appreciate it."
Raymond smiled, gripping the phone, his whole demeanor fragile and broken. "This is the last thing I can do for her before I die. It must be done quickly. I don't want to die with regrets."
As for appreciation, he didn't expect Margaret to appreciate it, as he never planned to tell her. It was tragic, learning how to love only at the end of his life.
