Chapter 525 Wishing You a Happy Marriage
"Margaret, congrats on your wedding. I won't be around anymore."
His voice, thick with emotion, echoed behind her.
Margaret's eyes stung, tears threatening to spill, but she held them back.
She wanted to turn around, but she couldn't. Turning back would mean all her efforts were for nothing. If she couldn't move past this, she shouldn't linger.
'Margaret, you've made your choice, no room for hesitation...Daniel will be a good husband. He loves you so much, you need to give your all to love him back. You have to erase Raymond from your heart. You can't wrong Daniel. You have to love him wholeheartedly, care for him.' She wondered.
Daniel drove silently, not saying a word. He didn't ask what she and Raymond talked about.
At the Municipal Office, the staff told them they needed to take a photo for their marriage certificate.
There were plenty of photo studios nearby.
They picked one at random.
There were quite a few couples taking wedding photos today, the room was packed.
The faces of those couples were filled with hope for the future.
Margaret looked at Daniel uneasily, "Daniel, are you sure you want to marry me?"
"Having second thoughts?" Daniel turned his head, asking gently.
She pressed her lips together, "No."
"People always feel uneasy and anxious about the unknown. This is pre-wedding jitters. Margaret, you're free with me. Don't be afraid. I told you, if you want a divorce, I'll cooperate anytime."
He had said so much, if she kept being difficult, it would seem ungrateful.
They changed into white shirts, as required for the wedding photo.
While changing, Margaret suddenly thought of her first marriage.
She was overjoyed when taking wedding photos with Raymond.
She was also required to wear a white shirt, she couldn't button it up and pestered Raymond to help. He was cold and indifferent, but she was happy, her lips curling up.
Even the air was sweet.
Soon it was time to take the wedding photo.
Raymond's shadow lingered in front of her, refusing to leave.
"Can I get closer to my husband?"
Back then, Raymond stood far from her during the photo, she asked the photographer with a smile.
The photographer said yes.
She moved closer to Raymond, his face darkened, because he didn't want to be that close to her.
"Raymond, we only take this wedding photo once in a lifetime. Of course, we should be close."
Lost in thought, Margaret heard someone calling her name.
Then her arm was tugged, bringing her back to reality.
"What are you thinking? The photographer asked you to smile." Daniel reminded her gently.
Margaret snapped back, forcing a smile.
But somehow, this time felt completely different from the first.
Maybe the last marriage hurt too much.
Holding the wedding photo, they returned to the Municipal Office.
She saw a long line at the registration window.
Unconsciously, she thought of Raymond again. They had once whispered sweet nothings, but the grind of marriage had exhausted all their feelings.
Could she and Daniel withstand life's trials?
Margaret felt uneasy.
Daniel asked her to sit at a long table while he fetched the forms.
Margaret sat down, biting her lip, watching people come and go in the Municipal Office.
"Fill in the information from your ID on these forms," Daniel said, placing the papers in front of her.
Margaret nodded, "Okay."
She picked up a pen, watching Daniel sit across from her, filling out his form with a serious expression.
Gripping the pen tighter, Margaret began to fill in her information.
"Margaret, we're about to get our certificate. Are you happy?"
"Of course, I'm happy. Raymond, congratulations on winning the beauty."
Echoes of past conversations filled her mind.
As she filled out the forms, memories of Raymond flooded her thoughts.
"Stay away from other men, got it? Or you'll be bedridden for two months."
She recalled a few days ago, when she was drunk.
Raymond holding her, gently placing her on the bed.
Their fingers intertwined.
Clothes on the floor.
The atmosphere was intoxicating.
Margaret's mouth went dry. She thought to herself, 'Margaret, are you sure you want to marry Daniel? If you go through with this, you'll really be husband and wife? Can you really hurt Daniel to escape Raymond? Can you truly accept Daniel, love him?'
Her phone rang suddenly.
Margaret took out her phone, seeing an unknown number.
Daniel looked up at her.
"I need to take this call."
"Okay."
She walked to the Municipal Office entrance.
The sun was glaring, and Margaret squinted as she answered the call.
A girl's anxious voice came through, "Is this Ms. Hughes?"
"Yes, it is," Margaret replied.
"You know Raymond, right?"
"Yes, I do."
"He just had a car accident. The car hit a mountain. He's in surgery now. Ms. Hughes, I called you with his phone, but you didn't answer. I had to use my own phone to call you. Please come quickly."
The nurse urged, "This patient is very stubborn. He won't go into surgery without seeing you."
Before Margaret could respond, the call ended.
Daniel came out, puzzled, "Margaret, what's wrong?"
He could tell something was off.
"Daniel, I have something to deal with. I can't get the certificate with you now."
"What happened?"
Margaret told him about the call.
He understood and insisted on driving her to the hospital.
The car sped, but they kept hitting red lights.
Margaret bit her lip, her fingers tightly clasped on her lap.
Daniel's grip on the steering wheel tightened. He looked at her, trying to comfort her, "It'll be okay, don't worry."
"Can you go faster?" Margaret's voice choked, her nose stinging.
She didn't know why she wanted to cry.
Raymond was in trouble. She should be happy; she should hate him, but why did it hurt so much?
Daniel's eyes darkened, unnoticed.
The car soon reached the hospital.
As soon as it stopped, Margaret unbuckled her seatbelt, hurriedly opened the door, and got out.
She didn't even think about Daniel.
He bitterly smiled, took the keys, got out, and quickly followed her.
Sure enough, when it came to Raymond, Margaret lost all reason.
Margaret only stayed calm when she was with him.
In the elevator, Margaret kept checking the time on her phone. Daniel comforted her, "Don't worry, I'm here."
She suddenly remembered Raymond's words from a few hours ago.
"Margaret, congratulations on your wedding. I won't appear in front of you anymore."
This accident, he must have been trying to end his life.
