Chapter 227 Sooner or Later, It Will Be Paid Off

Raymond's handsome face turned dark when he heard that.

His fingers, hanging by his sides, curled up and clenched together without him even realizing it.

They were a couple, yet she said she didn't want to owe him any favors.

Sure, he had done a lot for Margaret without her knowing. When reporters swarmed her outside The Hughes Group building, he had Alvin call the cops to handle it.

When he found out she was heading to Ironwood Lane to dig into his parents' wrongful death, he said he hoped she'd die soon but still sent Alvin to watch over her.

When she couldn't sleep, he canceled his plans to take her on a trip to Silverwood, revisiting old memories.

But she still didn't appreciate it.

She miscarried his child, took his benefits, made him swear, negotiated terms with him, and ran off to live with Daniel for a few days during their Silverwood trip.

She still thought about that mute boy, secretly scribbling his name all over the back of an old photo.

Raymond had put up with too much. As Marlon's daughter, she didn't feel any guilt towards him.

She kept provoking him, scheming against him, forcing him to break his principles over and over.

Thinking about it made Raymond's heart feel like it was about to explode with pent-up anger.

He stared angrily at Margaret for a few seconds before he grabbed her chin again with his large hand, tightly, painfully.

"You don't want to owe me any favors?" Raymond squinted his eyes, mocking.

Margaret pressed her lips together. "Yes."

"Heartless, haven't you owed me enough? What makes you think you can repay it all?" He sneered.

His words were like knives with thorns, stabbing fiercely at Margaret's already bleeding heart.

Once, they had been in love, even if only for a short time. When they first started dating, he called her baby. But now she was the heartless person he spoke of.

She did owe him a lot because her father owed him two lives.

However, Marlon had married her off to him. He had even carefully nurtured him, against all opposition, allowing him to enter the Hughes Group, giving him the opportunity to realize his ambitions, and the Hughes Group completely fell into his hands.

Marlon had also been in a car accident, now unable to speak or stand, who wasn't different from a cripple.

Nancy had also lost her loving family, her hair turned gray, worrying herself sick over the Hughes Family.

The sweeter Margaret's pre-marriage life was, the more miserable her post-marriage life became.

In this marriage, she had experienced neglect, was forced to divorce, was provoked by Sarah, and was eventually diagnosed with advanced cancer. She had paid such a painful price, but he still thought she couldn't repay it all.

Margaret wondered if the grudges of the past could be put to rest once the Hughes were completely wiped out. Her nose stung with tears welling up in her eyes.

But she didn't want to cry, especially not in front of Raymond.

So she desperately, frequently blinked her eyes, looked up at him, and gave him a hopeless smile. "It will be repaid."

When her life was over, all the hatred would dissipate.

Raymond got angry when he saw her smile, thinking she didn't care about him at all. "Get out!"

Margaret didn't expect him to say that. Her already pale face lost even more color. She reiterated, "I said, after we make love, I will leave."

"Are you deaf? I'm not interested in you! Even if you stripped naked right now, I wouldn't look at you!" Raymond irritably tugged at his tie, speaking impatiently.

"This was the condition we just agreed on. If you don't want to touch me, you can propose other conditions to offset it." Margaret's tone was calm, without any temper.

She used to be proud, had self-respect. But now Margaret was like a hedgehog stripped of its spines. And these spines were all pulled out by Raymond one by one.

Margaret thought, 'Anyway, I don't have many days left to live, enduring it would be a relief.'

Thinking this way, she felt her heart lighten instantly.

"Margaret, get out right away! If you dare say another word, I'll make sure Marlon is stuck in the hospital for the rest of his life, do you believe it?"

She stared straight at him, her eyelashes trembling, realizing he really hated her. Otherwise, he wouldn't speak like this.

Fortunately, it wasn't the first time she had heard this, so she could still accept it.

Margaret smiled vaguely, not daring to say another word, and turned to walk towards the door.

"Wait." Raymond's cold voice rang out again.

She turned back to look at him.

He glanced at the food on the table. "Take it away."

He didn't need hypocritical gifts, which were an eyesore.

Margaret walked to the table, picked up the food, and walked out of the CEO's office.

The Hughes Group had a bus stop right downstairs.

The bench was empty, so she sat down.

She opened the packaging box. Inside were a few pieces of delicious-looking pizza.

If it were before, if Raymond treated her like this, she would have thrown them into the trash in front of him.

But now, she understood that making money wasn't easy, maybe because she was always short of money.

Throwing it away would be too wasteful, after all, she had queued for an hour to buy it.

Picking up a piece of pizza, Margaret took big bites.

The taste was still the same, which made Margaret remember when she first got together with Raymond, during their college days.

He took her to eat at this pizza place, feeding her, making others envious. Even the owner remembered them as a sweet couple.

Margaret picked up the latte on the bench, took a sip, and it was bitter.

'Raymond drinks such bitter, unsweetened coffee, is he trying to remind himself not to have real feelings for me?' she thought to herself.

The latte was also cold, just like her marriage with Raymond, just like her feelings for Raymond. There was no warmth left.

No matter how cold or how bitter, she had to endure the discomfort and swallow it.

Her phone's sudden ringing jolted her back to reality. It was Alvin calling, his tone respectful. "Mrs. Howard, I've completed Mr. Hughes' discharge procedures. Where are you now? Do you want to wait for Mr. Hughes at the Hughes Manor, or come to the hospital to pick him up together?"

"I'll come to the hospital and pick him up with you," Margaret answered without hesitation, holding the phone. Marlon seemed very insecure; he would feel at ease seeing her by his side.

What Margaret didn't know was that the road home was not smooth, far from it. Instead, it was fraught with danger and full of obstacles.
