Chapter 43 She Had Made Too Many Mistakes in This Life

Margaret had this crooked grin on her face; she was totally screwed.

This time, no way out.

By tomorrow morning, or heck, maybe as soon as she kicked the bucket, Raymond would hear it on the news.

He wouldn't shed a tear at her funeral; might not even bother to show up.

The ones she felt the worst for were her folks.

She wondered if Marlon had come around after his surgery.

She'd messed up way too many times, so much that there was no fixing it.

All she could hope for was another shot in the next life, to make it up to her parents and steer clear of Raymond.

A mess of emotions tangled up in Margaret's heart.

A deafening noise ripped through the quiet night.

She didn't feel the pain she was bracing for. Her eyes snapped open.

The railing of Eldoria was busted by that wrecked car, which shot out like a rocket.

Then, like a popped balloon, it slid and tumbled down the steep slope. Ashley finally crashed into a frozen lake like a butterfly with broken wings.

The car punched a hole in the ice, and icy water rushed in through the window.

Margaret covered her mouth, staring in shock.

Everything happened so fast she didn't even react. After a few seconds, her brain kicked back in.

Margaret swallowed hard and reached for her phone in her pocket to call the polices.

However, Her pocket was empty.

She found her phone in the snow.

Her fingers shook like crazy as she tried to dial.

She hadn't even hit the call button when sirens blared. She turned around.

A bunch of police cars with flashing lights sped towards Eldoria and stopped.

Cops got out, some setting up a cordon, others calling a tow truck to fish the car out of the lake.

It was chaos, but they had it under control.

Some cop said, "Miss, you okay? Here, have some water."

A bottle of water was handed to Margaret.

She took it and looked up, finding the person in front of her oddly familiar.

The officer didn't seem surprised to see her. "It's all over now; don't worry."

Margaret was stunned. "What are you doing here?"

He was the one leading the team to clear the media when she knelt in front of The Hughes Group.

He'd made the media delete all the footage from that day and had even bought her some ointment before leaving.

Margaret remembered him well.

The cop was a bit taken aback, silently answering, ' Mr. Howard had ordered us to be here early.'

But Raymond had told them not to spill anything about him.

So he just smiled. "I got temporarily assigned here by the department. I'll be heading back in a few days."

Margaret's eyes narrowed with suspicion. "How'd you know something went down here?"

Everything seemed way too convenient.

The officer replied, "National Weather Service put out a winter weather advisory. Eldoria's off-limits 'cause it's too dangerous. A local heard fireworks and called us, so we came over."

A flicker of disappointment crossed her face. So, it was just a local who called the cops; she had thought Raymond had sent someone to save her.

So she was overthinking it.

The officer said, "Mrs. Turner, I gotta help with the rescue. I gotta go."

Margaret nodded. "Okay."

Several vans screeched to a halt in front of her.

Reporters from the local TV station, holding cameras and mics, jumped out and swarmed Margaret. "Do you know what just happened?"

"Did someone just commit suicide? Is it related to you?"

"Did you have a conflict with her? You're the only witness."

Mics were shoved in her face.

Margaret stayed silent. She only cared about why Ashley had committed suicide. Wasn't today her birthday? Ashley wanted to kill her, so why did she change her mind and off herself?

Alvin said, "Please step aside, everyone! Mrs. Turner is not accepting any media interviews right now!"

The crowd was pushed aside, and a familiar figure made his way through to Margaret.

Margaret saw Alvin in a suit and exclaimed, "It's you?"

Alvin leaned in and whispered in Margaret's ear, "Mrs. Howard, let me get you outta here. We'll talk in the car."

Margaret thought, 'In the car? Raymond's here too. Is he in the car? He didn't answer my calls but came to save me. Did he see my distress message?'

Her eyes lit up, sparkling with hope.

Alvin cleared a path for Margaret, and the media had to step back.

They walked to a black car.

Margaret's heart skipped a beat.

It was Raymond's license plate.

She remembered the cars he often drove very clearly.

Raymond was here! Raymond really came.

Turned out Raymond didn't hate her as much as he said; he still cared about her, and still worried for her life.

The fear that had gripped her heart melted away.

The mix of excitement and sadness made Margaret's nose tingle, and she blinked her dry eyes.

She was about to see Raymond. Would she be able to hold back her tears and drop all her pretenses?

Alvin, being a gentleman, opened the back seat door for her and gestured. "Mrs. Howard, please get in."

Margaret nodded slightly, her eyes scanning the back seat.

Her heart tightened even more, thinking, 'Raymond, are you coming to see me? You still care about me, right? You're still soft-hearted, aren't you?'
