Chapter 512 Return to Her Side
Margaret tightened her grip on the pen in her hand. Raymond had become a regular in the emergency room. Was his health really that bad?
Was his condition really that serious?
But what right did she have to feel sorry for him? They were divorced. Legally, they were strangers.
The Hughes family had fallen apart because of her. She couldn't afford to be soft-hearted or foolish again. Margaret, you need to learn your lesson.
She lifted her eyelids and gave a cold smile. "What does it have to do with me?"
"Ms. Hughes, you can't say that. If it weren't for Mr. Howard risking his life to give you a liver transplant, you wouldn't be here today. Mr. Howard has lost everything. He has nothing left. He's in a terrible state. Could you at least go see him, even if you don't want to be a donor?"
Alvin frowned and complained, "Do you even know if you love or hate Mr. Howard? Without love, there wouldn't be hate. Ms. Hughes, you still love Mr. Howard. Why deceive yourself?"
Margaret tightened her grip on the pen.
"Are you done?"
"Ms. Hughes—"
"If you're done, please leave. I have a meeting in five minutes."
Alvin felt a bit defeated. As he left, he muttered, "Ms. Hughes, Mr. Howard is still in the emergency room, his life hanging by a thread. You're being too heartless. You better truly not love Mr. Howard anymore, or you'll only feel more guilty and miserable if he dies."
The board meeting reconvened.
With the leverage Raymond had provided, Margaret successfully gained the support of the major shareholders and secured her position as the president of The Hughes Group.
She credited all of this to Daniel.
She invited Daniel to lunch, but while he talked about work, Margaret's mind wandered.
She couldn't focus on anything.
"Ms. Hughes, is something on your mind?" Daniel's voice gradually pulled her back to reality.
Her attention returned to his handsome face. "What?"
"If you have something on your mind, you can tell me. I'm here to help," Daniel said, taking a sip of water from his glass with his elegant fingers.
Margaret smiled. "It's nothing."
Meanwhile, at the hospital.
Raymond lay on a stretcher, being wheeled into a VIP room. His thoughts became clearer as he scanned the room. Rufus, some nurses, and Alvin were there, but not the person he wanted to see.
Rufus explained Raymond's care instructions to Alvin before leaving with the medical staff.
Raymond's eyes were filled with a deep sadness that pierced Alvin's heart. He knew Raymond was upset because Margaret wasn't there.
"Mr. Howard, Ms. Hughes will come to see you. Don't worry, she might be on her way," Alvin said, his throat tight and eyes red.
Raymond lay on the bed, his eyes barely open.
His face was gaunt, devoid of any color.
He wore a hat that covered his forehead, hiding any trace of his former dignity.
Raymond looked at Alvin for a long time, struggling to speak. He managed a bitter smile. "She won't come. She hates me."
Before the emergency, everything he saw was an illusion.
"Mr. Howard, I'll call Ms. Hughes and ask her to come," Alvin said, pulling out his phone.
Raymond frowned and weakly shook his head. "No."
"What?" Alvin looked at him, confused.
After resting for a moment, Raymond continued, his eyes dull. "Don't bother her. I don't want her to see me like this."
His beard was unkempt, and he wasn't wearing decent clothes.
He wanted her to remember him as he was, not as he was now. He had no right to hope to see her again.
Margaret wanted him dead. That was her only wish. How could he not fulfill it? Only by dying could she be happy and live a long life with Daniel.
"Go back to The Hughes Group. Stay by Margaret's side," Raymond ordered Alvin.
Even in his state, he was still worried about Margaret. She was too heartless. Raymond had fallen so low, and she didn't soften.
He had seen Margaret's stubbornness.
Thinking of this, he frowned. "Ms. Hughes is doing well with Mr. Taylor by her side. She doesn't need me right now. Mr. Howard, let me stay with you."
Raymond hadn't found a suitable bone marrow donor yet.
He was almost dead, still worrying about everything. Why couldn't he think about himself?
"Margaret's position at The Hughes Group isn't stable yet," Raymond coughed several times, almost coughing up his lungs. He clenched his fist, covering his pale lips. "Help her."
She didn't have many people she could trust.
Only Daniel, and that wasn't enough.
Margaret disliked him, but she didn't resist Alvin. Let Alvin take his place by Margaret's side. It would fulfill his wish.
Alvin's eyes reddened. He pressed his lips together.
Raymond saw he wasn't moving and got a bit angry, but he didn't have the strength to get mad.
Alvin softened his tone and left the room with his phone.
Soon, a male nurse arrived. He stayed by Raymond's side. Alvin had found the male nurse because Raymond didn't want a female nurse, fearing Margaret would misunderstand.
Even though he knew Margaret wouldn't come to see him.
Margaret worked late into the night at The Hughes Group. She looked out the floor-to-ceiling window at the neon lights of the skyscrapers and the streetlights on the overpass, all showcasing Silverbrook's prosperity.
She picked up her bag and left.
With the car window half down, Margaret drove. Alvin's car passed hers, as his vehicle was entering The Hughes Group while hers was leaving.
"Ms. Hughes, Mr. Howard is still in the emergency room. You should go see him. Without love, there wouldn't be hate. Mr. Howard has become a regular in the emergency room these days. Do you really know how you feel about Mr. Howard? Is it just hate?"
Her fingers tightened around the steering wheel as she thought Alvin's words.
How was Raymond doing?
She picked up her phone and checked. Alvin hadn't called her.
Had he left the emergency room?
Margaret had countless questions, her heart feeling like it would explode.
She turned the steering wheel, heading towards the hospital where Raymond was.
She wasn't worried about him. She just wanted to gloat, to see how miserable her enemy had become.
Margaret convinced herself, preparing her mind.
She pushed open the hospital room door.
The male nurse peeling an apple looked up and saw Margaret at the door.
He was shocked, the apple peel falling to the floor. "Ms. Hughes is here?"
