Chapter 406: Raymond, Sorry, I Broke My Promise

Raymond's phone was left on the back seat of the car.

Sarah glanced at the constantly flashing screen, smirked coldly, and then looked out at the neon lights through the car window.

The phone was on silent mode, so Alvin, who was driving, had no idea that Margaret was calling.

The screen soon went dark.

When Sarah returned to the hospital, she felt a chill run down her spine at the sight of Hubert in his uniform. More than anything, she felt a deep sense of dread.

After Alvin left, Hubert took Sarah to a hospital room under the pretense of giving her an injection, where he proceeded to torment and violate her.

Ever since she had tried to assassinate him in the car and failed, Hubert had found new ways to torture her, especially in this manner.

Sarah was in so much pain that she became numb, clutching the bedsheet tightly.

Only when her body was swollen and sore did Hubert finally let her go.

Sarah asked him for a photo of the bed. Hubert, smoking a cigarette, sneered, "You have a thing for this?"

"Margaret is about to regain her memory. We need to send her a special gift. She's dying too slowly; I want to speed things up."

"You're a real piece of work."

"If I become Raymond's wife, all his wealth will be yours," Sarah said with a flattering smile.

Hubert, who had a habit of collecting such photos, copied one onto a USB drive and handed it to her.

Sarah picked the most explicit one and started downloading Photoshop on her laptop.

Hubert watched her tinker with the photo, smoking his cigarette. When he finished, he saw that she had successfully swapped his head with Raymond's.

Her face-swapping skills were impressive; at first glance, it was quite convincing.

"Are your people ready?"

"Almost."

Suddenly, thunder and lightning filled the sky.

Rain poured down in torrents.

Purple lightning split the black sky, as if to tear apart all the injustices of the world.

Inside an old, abandoned factory.

Margaret was still making phone calls.

But none of the calls were going through.

Why wasn't Raymond answering? Where had he gone?

The phone in front of Margaret was suddenly kicked away by a pair of worn-out shoes, flying out of the factory.

Evelyn yanked Margaret's hair, her face marred by a terrifying scar that twisted like a centipede across her sallow skin.

Margaret was terrified, her body trembling uncontrollably.

"Are you wondering why I'm doing this to you when we have no grudge?" Evelyn said, slapping Margaret hard across the face.

Margaret's ears rang from the blow.

Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.

Evelyn crouched down in front of her. "We have a deep grudge, you and I. If it weren't for you badmouthing me to Raymond, I wouldn't have been fired! My husband wouldn't have left me! You ruined my life!"

"See this scar on my face? Raymond did this. When he saw I failed to kidnap you, he had someone throw acid on me. Do you know what acid feels like on your face?" Evelyn's hatred boiled over as she stomped on Margaret's hand.

Margaret cried out in pain, her body shaking like a leaf.

Evelyn continued, "Didn't you have a terminal illness? Why aren't you dead yet? It's so unfair. People who want to live can't, and scum like you just won't die! Your parents are dead, so why are you still here?"

"I kicked you off a cliff, and you still didn't die! You infuriate me!" Evelyn thought of how her once beautiful life had been destroyed by Margaret.

And her beloved daughter was still in Sarah's hands.

Raymond cared so much about Margaret; he wouldn't let her go. Evelyn was cornered.

It was all Margaret's fault.

Evelyn wasn't going to let Margaret regain her memory so easily. She vented all her frustration and bitterness on Margaret.

She punched and kicked her, dragged her by the hair to the factory wall, and slammed her head against it.

Margaret's forehead throbbed with pain, blood streaming down the wall.

She didn't know what she had done to deserve this, to encounter such a vengeful maniac.

She thought it was over until she saw Evelyn pull a syringe from a medical kit.

Evelyn filled the syringe with a red liquid and approached her.

Margaret realized what was happening and tried to back away.

She didn't want to die.

But there was nowhere to go; her back hit the cold wall.

Evelyn grabbed her and dragged her forward, ready to inject her.

Margaret, in a panic, bit Evelyn's arm and tried to escape.

But her hands and feet were tightly bound.

She barely took a step before falling to the ground.

"Where do you think you're going?" Evelyn dragged her back, her arm scraping roughly against the floor.

Margaret's skin quickly peeled away, tears streaming down her face from the pain.

She shook her head desperately.

Evelyn slapped her hard, dazing her.

Before she could react, the syringe was already in her arm.

She watched the red liquid quickly enter her bloodstream, her body.

Her head grew heavy, her consciousness fading. She felt herself being dragged out of the factory.

It was raining outside.

She didn't know when the downpour had started.

She remembered seeing stars when she came out, but now there was only thunder and lightning, not a single star in sight.

Raindrops the size of beans pelted Margaret's body.

Her hair, her clothes, her face were soaked.

The blood at the corner of her mouth was quickly washed away by the rain.

Margaret's head grew heavier, her eyelids drooping.

Her hands and feet were untied.

But she had no strength left.

Evelyn said today was the day she would go to hell.

Margaret didn't know what had been injected into her.

Was she going to die?

Who wanted her dead?

Margaret didn't even have the strength to cry, her eyes opening and closing.

She saw Evelyn return to the factory.

Margaret looked up at the rain pouring down, water droplets clinging to her eyelashes. She murmured to herself, Raymond, I thought after my surgery, when you came back from your business trip, I could be your bride again.

We could be together forever, never apart.

This time, I broke my promise.

Raymond, I'm sorry. I'm going to disappear from this world completely.
