Chapter 382: The Aftermath, You Need to Handle

The head nurse shot a worried glance at the two junior nurses. Seeing the situation deteriorate and fearing for Margaret's well-being, she quickly pulled out her phone and called Daniel. "Mr. Taylor, Ms. Hughes isn't doing well. You need to come over right away."

Margaret's current state left the head nurse too afraid to offer any advice or say anything. She could only stand by and watch over her.

Through the glass window, Margaret saw Raymond lying there, barely clinging to life. Her desperate cries echoed in the room, her heart feeling as if it had been shattered into pieces by a sledgehammer.

Pieces that could never be put back together.

Her parents were gone, and now Raymond was all she had left. And now Raymond lay in the ICU, just a wall away. Just one wall away.

And she hadn't even noticed!

She knew nothing, absolutely nothing—

When people are truly heartbroken, they can't cry. Or maybe her tears had already dried up, leaving her eyes aching, aching so much. She felt like she was suffocating from the pain.

Alvin arrived just then, seeing Margaret standing at the ICU door in such a state, he instantly understood. The head nurse quickly briefed him, "Alvin."

Alvin's face darkened. "Go do your jobs."

The head nurse and the junior nurses sighed in relief and hurried away.

"Mrs. Howard—" Alvin looked uneasily at the grief-stricken Margaret.

Margaret turned to Alvin. "You lied to me. Was it fun?"

"This was Mr. Howard's decision. Mr. Howard didn't want you to worry. Please understand his intentions." Alvin's eyes were filled with sorrow.

Margaret gave a bitter smile. "No wonder you've been acting strange these past few days. Your eyes are red, like you've been crying. Was it you who sent me Raymond's messages?"

"It was Mr. Taylor." Alvin didn't hide it anymore.

Margaret exhaled, her eyelashes trembling. So that's how it was. No wonder there were no calls, no video chats. Raymond's phone was with Daniel.

Raymond had gone to such lengths for her.

"Mrs. Margaret Howard, Mr. Raymond Howard rushed back from abroad as soon as he heard your surgery was successful. But he got into a car accident after landing. He's been in the ICU ever since. So it's not that we didn't let Mr. Raymond Howard see you, it's that his condition is critical, and he simply can't."

"He was in a car accident?" Margaret's eyes widened in shock.

Alvin nodded. He wanted to tell Margaret that Raymond had stayed to donate part of his liver for her, never actually leaving the country. But Raymond didn't want Margaret to know, so Alvin had to stick to the lie.

"Mr. Raymond Howard valued your agreement greatly. He wanted to be the first person you saw when you woke up. But fate had other plans."

When Daniel arrived, he was a smart man. He didn't need anyone to say anything; just one look at Margaret's expression told him she knew everything.

"Raymond will wake up. Margaret, don't give up." Daniel realized his words of comfort felt hollow and powerless.

Margaret murmured, "But he's so badly hurt, he's on the brink of death. Preparing for a funeral, how can he come back from that?"

"Margaret, think about yourself. You were given only a month to live, and now you've had a successful surgery. Don't give up." Daniel had told her this many times before: don't give up.

Margaret looked at Alvin. "Come with me."

In the room, Alvin turned on the light and closed the door. Margaret asked, "What else are you hiding from me?"

There were too many things he was hiding, all because Raymond didn't want her to know.

"Alvin! This is your last chance to come clean!" Margaret was angry.

Alvin reluctantly revealed, "Raymond's already made a will. If anything happens to him, The Hughes Group will go to you, including all his assets, cash, and stocks. Ten percent of The Hughes Group's shares will be given to Daniel."

"He wants Daniel to help me run The Hughes Group?"

"That's right. Raymond knows this accident is severe and fears he won't recover, so he wants Daniel to take care of you."

Alvin couldn't hold back anymore and continued, "And your cancer was severe, yet you kept fighting with Raymond and refused treatment. Raymond went back and forth to get David to treat you. Raymond used to be a workaholic, but after you got sick, he pushed all his work aside to focus on your treatment."

"Why did he try to pair me with Daniel?" Margaret was puzzled.

Alvin hesitated, then spoke. "Because before you lost your memory, you were very close to Daniel. You even wanted to divorce Raymond for Daniel."

Margaret was shocked. She had been so unreasonable, wanting to divorce such a good husband?

And refusing treatment?

She felt she deserved to die! She was the one who should die, not Raymond.

Raymond was the best man in the world, the one who loved her the most.

Margaret felt a mix of guilt, anger, remorse, and despair. She asked Alvin to leave and close the door behind him.

Alvin added, "David said if Raymond doesn't wake up in the next two days, we need to prepare for the worst. Raymond's condition is critical, and he likely won't wake up. Margaret, Raymond, like you, is an orphan. You need to be strong and send him off. You need to handle his affairs."

Margaret's lips twisted in despair. If Raymond was gone, was there any point in her living alone?

How lonely it would be, with no family, no friends. Just money, and nothing else.

Rotting in a pile of money, how ridiculous.

After Alvin left, Margaret didn't sleep all night. She couldn't sleep, each minute felt like an eternity, as if she were being tortured in a frying pan.

Raymond, you're so unfair. I made it through, and you're a grown man, why can't you make it through?

Driving recklessly, Raymond, you broke your promise, do you know that?

Margaret covered her mouth, tears streaming down. She thought she had no more tears, but now she realized she was still crying, heart-wrenching sobs.

She picked up her phone and saw a notification from a nearby church. She clicked on it and saw that the church was close by. It was a small, niche church, but people said it was particularly effective.

Someone had been in a similar situation, beyond medical help, and after sincerely praying, they miraculously recovered. The post had many comments from people saying they prayed for wealth, love, and it all came true, if you were sincere.

Margaret didn't know if the post was fabricated or if the church was truly that effective.

The next morning, Alvin opened the door to bring Margaret breakfast, only to find the bed empty. Checking the hospital's surveillance, he realized Margaret had left the room at four in the morning. The nurse's station was empty at that time, so no one saw her leave.

Alvin informed Daniel, who frowned and quickly called his assistant. "I need Margaret's whereabouts in five minutes!"

As he made the call, Daniel looked out the hallway window. It had snowed all night, and now everything was covered in white. She had just had surgery and was still weak. In this cold weather, where could she have gone? He should have stayed with her yesterday to prevent her from doing something foolish. Daniel felt a mix of guilt and worry.
