Chapter 433 Eyes Empty and Tired
Daniel raised his fist, ready to hit Raymond again.
"Mr. Taylor, chill out! What's done is done. Beating Mr. Howard to a pulp won't change anything! Acting on impulse is dangerous!" Alvin grabbed Daniel, stopping him from hitting Raymond further.
Daniel's face darkened even more.
"Let him go!"
"Mr. Howard, are you nuts? He's hitting you, and you want me to let him go?" Alvin was stunned.
Raymond sneered, "I said, let him go!"
Reluctantly, Alvin released his grip.
Raymond stood up from the ground, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth with his rough fingers, wincing in pain.
"Is Margaret awake?" he asked Daniel, pressing for an answer.
If Daniel was here, did that mean David was here too? Had Margaret been saved?
Another punch landed on Raymond's handsome face, and Daniel grabbed his collar. It was rare to see Daniel this angry.
"What are you, crazy? Still dreaming? She's been dead for a while! If praying worked, why would we need hospitals? Look at the state you've put yourself in. Who are you trying to impress? Margaret jumped to her death because you failed to protect her! You drove her to this! If I were her, I'd want to die too! How dare you bring her back? Did you ask her before giving her that amnesia shot? Did you consider her feelings? Raymond, you're always so self-righteous, so arrogant!"
Raymond blinked his dry eyes, his mind exploding with realization.
She hadn't woken up.
Of course, she was dead. No amount of IVs or resuscitation could change that. It was all self-deception.
"You had your chance, and you blew it! Are you stupid or just evil?"
Daniel, furious, punched Raymond again, knocking him to the ground.
Alvin stepped in front of Raymond, trying to reason with Daniel. "Mr. Taylor, you can't say that. Mr. Howard's been good to Mrs. Howard. He's been good to you too. He gave up his work, left The Hughes Group, to stay with Mrs. Howard during her treatment. He didn't want her to regain her memory either, but there was no other choice. Mrs. Howard loved Mr. Howard deeply. If you keep hitting him, she won't rest in peace."
He continued, "Mr. Howard even told me that if Mrs. Howard chose you after six months, I shouldn't stop it and should support it. He's not as bad as you think. If you can understand Mrs. Howard, why can't you understand Mr. Howard? Before their divorce, you two were close. Mr. Howard is a man; he gets jealous and hurt too. Mr. Taylor, put yourself in his shoes. No one wanted things to turn out this way. You don't want Mrs. Howard to be unsettled in her passing, right?"
Daniel gradually relaxed his clenched fist when he heard this.
Margaret did love Raymond deeply.
He didn't want her to be unsettled in her passing.
Raymond, however, didn't appreciate Alvin's intervention, sneering, "Who told you to be disrespectful to Mr. Taylor?"
"Mr. Howard," Alvin turned back.
Raymond glared at him. "Apologize to him."
"I—"
Daniel interrupted, "No need for an apology. Raymond, how long are you going to keep this up? Margaret is dead. She should be cremated and laid to rest, not tormented even in death."
"I just want her to come back to life," Raymond said with a bitter smile.
"She can't come back! Wake up! Today, Margaret has to be cremated! As her friend, I have to make sure she rests in peace!"
Daniel narrowed his eyes, his voice cold. "Are you going to take her yourself, or do I have to do it?"
"I'll take her myself."
Margaret's body was wheeled out of the ICU by medical staff.
Maybe it was the IV fluids or the medical treatments, but her face and body were swollen.
As the body reached the hospital entrance, the car Daniel had arranged arrived.
The funeral home staff, dressed in black and wearing disposable gloves, solemnly lifted Margaret's body into the hearse.
Raymond followed the car, sitting in the back seat, while Alvin, worried about him, sat in the front passenger seat.
Daniel drove his own car to the crematorium.
"Mr. Howard, why are you listening to Mr. Taylor so much?" Alvin asked, surprised.
Raymond lifted his eyelids, his hands clasped on his knees.
He suddenly remembered what the priest had told him when he first arrived in Everpeak Mountain City.
"Many things are destined. Perhaps you and the lady you love are not meant to be, no matter how hard you try. I advised her too, even if she prayed for you to wake up, the outcome might not be what she hoped for. But she was too stubborn to listen."
The priest had seen their fate clearly. No matter how much they struggled, it couldn't be changed.
But neither he nor Margaret could see it.
Their fate had run its course.
When it's over, it must end, no matter how desperately he wanted to hold on to the last shred of hope.
The old Raymond would never have done such crazy things.
Kneeling, praying, donating his liver.
These were things he once considered foolish and beneath him.
He had gone mad for Margaret.
Yes, if praying worked, why would we need hospitals?
He was truly sick.
"Mr. Howard, are you okay?" Alvin asked, looking at him through the rearview mirror. Raymond had lost a lot of weight and his dark circles had deepened.
Raymond snapped out of his thoughts, meeting Alvin's concerned gaze. He asked, "Do you believe in fate?"
"What?"
He believed now.
The old him would have thought that human will could conquer anything.
But with Margaret, he believed in fate.
Lovers always faced endless obstacles, always missing each other.
If this wasn't fate, what was it?
Meeting was fate, whether it was good or bad.
His calculated approach to Margaret was the beginning of their ill-fated relationship.
Planting the seeds of evil, he had foolishly hoped for a happy ending.
How ridiculous and laughable.
Raymond's eyes were tired and hollow, lacking their usual sharpness and intensity.
"It's not about listening to Daniel. It's that I think he's right. I've always been so arrogant, forcing my will onto Margaret. The liver transplant was like that, and now this. Even if Margaret woke up, she'd still want to die. I never truly respected her. This time, I want to respect her wishes. If she could live, who would choose death? Her heart was already dead."
