Chapter 490 Get in the Car, I'll Take You Back

Even though it was outside, the setup had a great vibe.

A waiter stood next to Raymond, playing the violin.

The tune was familiar; it was her favorite song from the past.

Margaret could tell that Raymond had put a lot of effort into tonight's meeting. But she felt nothing, not even a little.

He stood up and personally pulled out a chair for her to sit.

She was reluctant, but when she met his intense gaze, she held back her temper, walked over, and sat down.

"Your favorite," Raymond said, pushing a plate of sliced steak in front of her.

The presentation was exquisite, but she had no appetite.

"Finish it. The Hughes Group will resume its partnership with The Taylor Group."

"Call them first, then I'll eat."

"Margaret, don't you trust me?"

"Is there any trust left between us?" Margaret sneered.

Across the table, Raymond adjusted his glasses with his long fingers. He didn't get angry or argue further. Instead, he took out his phone and called Alvin to restore the partnership right in front of her.

Only then did Margaret pick up her knife and fork and start eating. She looked at him, and despite everything he had done to hurt her, her heart still inexplicably raced.

But her rational mind told her she couldn't be foolish anymore. He was already engaged to Sarah, and she had given him a chance to explain.

She averted her gaze, lowered her eyes, and quickly finished the steak on her plate. Raymond tried to speak, "Margaret—"

"I'm not your Margaret. Mr. Howard, you've got the wrong person," Margaret interrupted irritably.

Raymond wanted to say more, but Margaret put down her utensil, looking up, "Mr. Howard, don't talk while eating. I agreed to have dinner with you, and I did. You promised to resume the partnership with The Taylor Group, and you did. We're even now. I'm done, goodbye."

She stood up and turned to leave.

He had finally seen her, and there was no way he would let her go so easily. He quickly stood up and grabbed her wrist, "Margaret, listen to my explanation."

"Explain what? What's there to explain?" Margaret shook off his hand and glared at him, "Raymond, I gave you a chance to explain, and you didn't take it. You're already engaged to someone else, so stop coming to me. Bad men get their comeuppance."

Margaret walked out of the restaurant.

It suddenly started to rain, and she didn't have an umbrella.

The drizzle fell on her dark hair and slender figure, like needles piercing her.

A car horn blared, hurting Margaret's ears. She frowned and looked up to see a black Cullinan parked in front of her.

Through the half-lowered window, she saw Raymond leaning back in the driver's seat, his long, well-defined fingers lazily resting on the steering wheel.

Maybe it was because she looked so miserable and downcast.

His handsome brows furrowed, "Get in. I'll take you home."

"No need."

The rain was getting heavier, and they were separated by the rain curtain.

She refused him.

Raymond's brows furrowed even more, "The rain won't stop anytime soon. It's hard to get a cab here. Now's not the time to be stubborn."

Stubborn?

At this point, he still thought she was being stubborn with him.

What right did she have to be stubborn with him?

Margaret scoffed, letting the rainwater drip from her hair onto her cheeks, her eyes red, "I'd rather walk home than get in your car."

"Margaret!" Raymond laughed in exasperation. She was still so stubborn.

Margaret looked down at her rain-soaked phone screen, wiping away the raindrops as she tried to find a ride-hailing app, but no one was accepting her request.

Suddenly, a large umbrella appeared over her head.

Shielding her from the rain, a high-quality coat was draped over her wet shoulders.

She looked down and realized her little black dress was soaked.

Looking up, she saw Daniel in a dark shirt, holding a large black umbrella. He was as gentle and refined as ever, his smile and demeanor so gentlemanly.

"Ms. Hughes, my car is across the street. Let me take you home. It's hard to get a cab here."

Margaret just wanted to leave quickly, "Okay."

Sitting in the Cullinan's driver's seat, Raymond couldn't stay calm anymore. He sneered, "Daniel, why are you everywhere? Looks like your dad didn't hit you hard enough with those canes, letting you recover so quickly?"

"Thanks to Mr. Howard, I'm still alive," Daniel replied coldly, meeting Raymond's disdainful gaze.

The tension was palpable.

Margaret feared Daniel would anger Raymond, affecting The Taylor Group, so she quickly tugged on his shirt sleeve, "Let's go."

Her anxious expression drove Raymond crazy.

He watched them share an umbrella and cross the street together. He saw Daniel thoughtfully open the car door for her, and she sat in the passenger seat.

What did she take him for?

It seemed Daniel had truly become someone special to her. She had agreed to dinner with him to plead for Daniel.

If not for his remaining rationality, if not for Daniel being a gentleman, he would have used Daniel as leverage to force Margaret into his car.

But he didn't want to do that. The tighter he pushed, the further Margaret would drift away.

Raymond drove off.

As Daniel drove, Margaret glanced at his profile. Daniel's appearance and demeanor were very clean.

His smile, his eyes, his subtle expressions were all impeccably pure. If Raymond was a devil, then Daniel was a rare angel.

She felt overwhelmed with guilt thinking about how such a good person had been beaten black and blue by Cade because of her.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel looked at her, puzzled, "I was just passing by, Ms. Hughes. No need to apologize."

"I saw the photos of you beaten by Mr. Cade Taylor. The Taylor Group's stock price has been falling, and the company's value is evaporating daily. You've been troubled by the board... I saw all the news." Margaret bit her lip, paused, and then comforted, "But it's all over now. Raymond won't trouble you anymore. He'll resume the partnership with you."

Hearing this, Daniel's fingers tightened on the steering wheel. He pursed his lips and asked after a moment, "Why did you show up? I'm not as fragile as you think. I'm not dead yet. Even though I'm an illegitimate child, I'm still the only bloodline of The Taylor Family. My father wouldn't just watch me lose my position as CEO. Ms. Hughes, you were too hasty. You should have discussed it with me first."

She understood everything he said, but seeing those reports made her feel incredibly guilty.

Daniel still underestimated Raymond's tactics. Raymond wouldn't stop until he achieved his goal. The Taylor Group was no match for Raymond, let alone The Hughes Group.

"It was just a meal. I didn't do anything extraordinary for you," Margaret said, looking at her intertwined fingers with a bitter smile.
