Chapter 466 Women, They Are All the Same with the Lights Off
The glass shattered on impact.
Red wine spilled onto the carpet, blooming into a dark stain.
Daniel grabbed the collar of Raymond's robe before he even had a chance to react.
A punch landed squarely on Raymond's flawless, handsome face.
"Raymond, you jerk! How could you do this to Margaret? Do you have any idea how much you've hurt her, and you're still here drinking like nothing happened?" Daniel's furious voice echoed through the room.
Raymond's cheek throbbed with pain.
He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with his thumb, the crimson stark against his skin.
Slowly, he looked up and gave Daniel a smile.
He was in a foul mood, consumed by jealousy, and there was nothing he could do about it, so he was drowning his sorrows in alcohol.
To Daniel, that smile was a provocation, making his blood boil even more.
Another punch landed on Raymond's nose.
The pain was excruciating, and bright red blood streamed from his nostrils.
"Raymond, I used to think you were just arrogant. Now I think you're an idiot. You could donate an entire liver to Margaret, pray for her in the snow, and yet you can't even recognize her? How could you not know Margaret?" Daniel's anger was palpable.
Raymond let out a bitter laugh. Yes, he was a fool. He couldn't even recognize Margaret and had been moved to tears by his own blindness.
Daniel was right.
"Did you know, before you came back from praying, I gave Margaret a drug to fake her death? Then I bribed the crematorium staff to smuggle her body out and sent her abroad for surgery with David's help. I thought we could settle abroad, away from all this chaos. But when she woke up from the surgery, she had amnesia again. The only thing she remembered was you, Raymond! She forgot her parents, me, and all the pain you caused her. Her memory was stuck in the time when you promised to take wedding photos with her in college."
Daniel continued, "She saw the funeral you held for her on TV and cried, begging me to bring her back. Do you know, when she was bored abroad, she would write your name and draw your picture? When she finally recovered, I brought her back, only to find an impostor by your side! I could tell right away that the woman wasn't Margaret. She just had plastic surgery to look like her. How could you be fooled?"
Daniel, barely containing his rage, glared at Raymond sprawled on the couch. "Do you think Sarah is your benefactor?"
"Isn't she?" Raymond squinted.
Daniel let out a bitter laugh. "Of course not. Margaret sponsored a mute boy years ago. From what I found out, that mute boy was you. The five million dollars Sarah gave you was from Margaret. Sarah told Margaret that the money went into her pocket and the mute boy died. Sarah has been manipulating you, and you didn't even notice?"
Raymond was stunned, his eyes filled with confusion and shock.
His face, flushed from the alcohol, looked dazed.
Margaret was his benefactor.
He was the mute boy, but he could speak. How could he be the mute boy?
But Daniel's words made sense.
"Ashley was also sent by Sarah to kill Margaret. But Ashley had a change of heart and committed suicide by crashing into a broken railing. Raymond, you never truly trusted Margaret. You say you love her, but she can't feel your love. Even after all the pain you caused her, she still stopped me from causing you trouble. Any other smart woman would have left long ago."
Raymond's eyes reddened, but he didn't want to show his emotions in front of Daniel.
His amber eyes blinked repeatedly.
"Come on! Let's go bring Margaret home!" Daniel grabbed Raymond by the collar.
Bring her home?
He wanted to, more than anything.
But right now, danger was all around him.
How could he bring her back?
She was his weakness, his armor.
The further away she was, the safer she would be.
With that thought, Raymond shook off Daniel's hand.
Daniel stumbled back a few steps.
"Why should I bring her back?" Raymond sneered.
"What did you say?" Daniel frowned.
"I said, why should I bring an impostor home? Daniel, do you think I'm an idiot? Do you think I'll believe whatever you say?" Raymond sneered. "Do you think I can't tell the real from the fake?"
Daniel narrowed his eyes, clenching his fists. He hadn't expected this reaction from Raymond.
"The impostor by your side, did you create her?"
"What?"
"I get it. You want the real one by my side, so you created an impostor to switch them? Daniel, you're despicable. If you like my wife so much, why don't you just pretend the impostor is Margaret? Women are all the same with the lights off. She looks just like Margaret, so just imagine she is."
Raymond's taunt earned him another beating.
Daniel, enraged, punched and kicked him.
But Raymond didn't fight back.
"Why aren't you fighting back?" Daniel roared in frustration.
Raymond gave a bitter smile. He had late-stage leukemia, an impostor by his side, and he didn't know if he could survive after clearing these obstacles.
After drawing out the snake, he might not have many days left.
How could he drag Margaret down with him?
With that thought, Raymond looked up and smirked. "Daniel, you're such a coward."
"What did you say?" Daniel shouted.
"If I were you, I'd take advantage of the situation. You're so hesitant, you can't even handle an impostor? What kind of man are you?"
As expected, Raymond got another beating.
Daniel stormed out, slamming the door.
Raymond slumped on the carpet, leaning against the couch.
His face and hands were covered in bruises.
The pain was unbearable.
He called Alvin, who rushed over and was shocked to see Raymond's condition. "Mr. Howard, did someone beat you up?"
Raymond's cold gaze silenced him.
They arrived at Hubert's place, where Hubert had been waiting. As he bandaged Raymond, he asked cautiously, "Mr. Howard, should I call the police? You're seriously injured."
"Daniel came to see me tonight, claiming the Margaret by my side is an impostor." Raymond bit down on his cigarette, his voice calm as he smiled at Hubert, though the smile didn't reach his eyes.
