Chapter 476 Being Secretly Loved by Daniel, Very Honored, Very Happy

Silverbrook.

The Taylor Villa.

The sky was a dull gray, and snow was falling furiously.

Margaret had trapped herself on the rooftop, a fire pit in front of her with flames flickering inside.

She picked up the sketch paper lying on the ground. It was filled with drawings of Raymond. There were sketches of him carrying her on his back, of him attentively listening to lectures on the snowy campus, and of them strolling through the campus, him pushing a bike with one hand and holding her hand with the other.

He was busy studying and preparing for exams. Whenever she missed him, she would draw him.

But now, he had changed. He was about to get engaged to another woman.

She couldn't deceive herself anymore. Today's phone call had shattered her romantic illusions.

Tears fell onto the sketch paper, and the cold wind quickly dried the tear stains.

She threw the sketches into the fire pit.

The notebook filled with his name followed.

All quickly turned to ashes, just like her heart. Margaret, you have to force yourself to let go. This relationship was always a one-sided pursuit.

The glass door to the rooftop suddenly opened.

Daniel, wearing a gray overcoat, rushed in and saw her crouched by the fire pit. He sighed in relief, "Ms. Hughes, you—"

He had received a call from the housekeeper, informing him that she had seen the news about Raymond and Sarah's engagement. He had hurriedly dropped everything to come back.

Thankfully, Margaret was okay.

Margaret looked up and saw the concern in his eyes. She gave him a smile, but it was filled with sadness and helplessness. "It's not even the end of the workday. Why are you back?"

Daniel pressed his lips together, worriedly asking, "Are you alright?"

Margaret blinked her dry eyes. "I'm fine, don't worry."

She slowly stood up, giving a bitter smile. "I've come to terms with Raymond's change of heart. It's cruel, but I'm not running away anymore. Let the past be the past. Mr. Taylor, I think it's time for me to move out. Thank you for everything."

"Is it uncomfortable living here? You don't have to move. There are plenty of rooms in my house," Daniel said.

Margaret's eyelashes trembled. "It's not appropriate. You have someone you like. If I stay here long-term, people might misunderstand. Besides, I don't have the right to live here. I thought Raymond would come to take me back soon. But now, it seems that day will never come. I should move out."

"Ms. Hughes, we're friends. You don't have to be so formal."

Margaret picked up her phone and transferred thirty thousand dollars to Daniel. "This is my token of appreciation, Mr. Taylor. Please accept it."

Daniel knew that accepting this money meant Margaret wouldn't owe him anything anymore. It also meant there was no chance for them to be together.

He didn't want to accept it. He wanted Margaret to continue living here.

"Mr. Taylor, if you don't accept it, it means you look down on me. If you look down on me, then we shouldn't be friends anymore." She didn't like taking advantage of people.

Daniel frowned. "I said we're friends. You don't have to be so formal. Besides, I don't need the thirty thousand dollars."

"I know you don't need the money, but it's my token of appreciation. If you don't accept it, I'll feel like I lived here for free."

Margaret took his phone and helped him accept the money, then handed it back to him. "Thanks, Daniel."

"What are your plans now?" Daniel asked, concerned.

Margaret thought for a moment and smiled. "I'll take it one step at a time. I've lost my memory, and my only support, Raymond, has left me. Once I adjust my mindset, I should find a job. It's not a long-term solution to stay unemployed and dwell on past feelings."

"Have you thought about what kind of job? I can help you find one. The Taylor Group is looking for a secretary. Would you like to give it a try?" Daniel, as if suddenly struck by an idea, extended an olive branch.

Margaret wasn't interested. Thinking about Raymond getting engaged to another woman made her feel down. "We'll see."

That night.

It was Margaret's last night at The Taylor Villa. She was in a bad mood and drank several bottles of wine during dinner. Daniel drank with her.

Seeing her cheeks flushed, he was mesmerized.

Margaret, having drunk too much, started crying and talking about her and Raymond.

Daniel held a wine glass, drinking silently, comforting her. "I understand. Cry if you want, vent if you need to. Just let it out."

"Daniel, did you know Raymond had changed his heart long ago?" Margaret asked, sitting on the carpet, looking at him drunkenly.

He didn't speak, which was a silent confirmation.

"Do you think I'm pretty foolish?" Margaret laughed bitterly and drank the red liquid in her wine glass.

He looked at her with pity. "No. I understand you. I know what it's like to love someone you can't have."

"Don't you have a girl you secretly like? Tell me about your pain, make me feel better," she smiled.

Daniel looked at her for a long time, not speaking.

She thought he was unwilling. "Just kidding. If you don't want to talk, that's fine."

"Do you really want to hear?" Daniel asked seriously.

She nodded. "I'm curious. You're so outstanding. What kind of girl would you secretly like? She must be very lucky and happy to be liked by you."

"Why do you think so?"

"Because you're a very good person, someone who gives strength and warmth. Unlike Raymond, who only makes me angry, cry, and feel hurt."

"So, in your eyes, I'm more worthy of love than Raymond?"

"You could say that. Come on, I'm eager to hear your story," Margaret said, her lips curling into a smile as she hiccuped. She leaned against the sofa, her head drooping, feeling a bit sleepy.

Daniel realized that even facing Margaret, even when she was drunk, he couldn't bring himself to confess his feelings to her.

He poured himself a glass of wine and drank it all.

Though he had drunk a lot, his mind was clear.

He decided to reveal his secret that had been kept for so many years.

This was the opportunity Margaret had given him, and he had to seize it.

"The first time I saw her was in elementary school. We went to the same school. At that time, I was called a bastard and was isolated, with no friends, often bullied. She stood up for me, even though she was a girl, like a superhero, speaking out for justice. She told those bullies that I was her friend, and if they dared to bully me again, they would be going against her. Although she soon forgot about calling me her friend, I carried that title, and it became my shield during my school years."
