Chapter 506 No Room for Maneuver

Margaret hung up the phone, slipped on her shoes, and stepped into the rain.

Her clothes were soaked, her long hair clinging messily to her pale face.

Her eyes were red, and her gaze was foggy.

Suddenly, her heel broke. Margaret took off her shoes and walked barefoot on the wet ground, shards of glass piercing her feet.

Bright red blood flowed out, only to be washed away by the rain almost instantly.

Margaret limped painfully.

Alvin wanted to stop the car and offer her a ride, but he knew Margaret's stubbornness. She would rather break her foot than have anything to do with Raymond again.

He escorted Margaret back to her apartment.

Alvin called Raymond to report, mentioning Margaret's injured foot and sending a photo he had secretly taken to Raymond's phone.

Raymond stared at the photo for a long time, unable to snap out of it.

In the photo, Margaret was drenched in rain, bending over to check her injured foot.

Then she limped away, looking utterly defeated.

Raymond gripped his phone, his eyes reddening. He found it more painful than anything to see Margaret suffer like this.

The next morning.

Margaret drove to the hospital, but her car broke down halfway.

Coincidentally, she ran into Daniel. He was dressed in a black business suit, with a solid black tie under his shirt. His black trousers accentuated his long legs.

Seeing Margaret, he walked over, bathed in the morning sunlight.

"Hey, Ms. Hughes, what are you doing here?"

Margaret was trying to restart her car but couldn't. Hearing his voice, she looked up and saw Daniel. She paused, then smiled and explained, "I was heading to the hospital, but my car broke down."

"Step out, I'll take a look."

Margaret opened the car door and got out. Daniel tried to start the car but failed. He then checked the hood and looked at Margaret. "Ms. Hughes, how about I give you a ride to the hospital?"

"What?" Margaret looked at him, puzzled.

Daniel explained, "Your car can't be fixed quickly; it needs to be towed to a repair shop. This place is too remote to get a cab easily. Why not take my ride?"

"Are you going to the hospital too?"

It wasn't on his way at all, but Daniel smiled and nodded. "A client is hospitalized, and I need to visit. Since you're going, let's make it today."

"Are you worried Raymond might misunderstand? Don't worry, I'll just drop you at the hospital entrance and won't go in," Daniel said considerately.

Margaret quickly replied, "I've broken up with him. No need to worry about him."

Daniel raised an eyebrow subtly and looked at his assistant. "Contact the repair shop and get Ms. Hughes's car fixed."

"Get it, Mr. Taylor." The assistant knew his boss wanted to get close to Margaret. Daniel, usually serious, would go to great lengths to create opportunities to be near her.

Margaret handed her car keys to Daniel's assistant, grateful. "Thank you."

"You're welcome, Ms. Hughes," the assistant replied.

Daniel walked to a Maserati, with Margaret ahead of him.

She recognized his car. The headlights flashed, and her first instinct was to sit in the back seat, as sitting in the front passenger seat felt inappropriate.

But then she thought, she was hitching a ride. Sitting in the back would make Daniel seem like a chauffeur, which was too rude.

Feeling awkward and uneasy, she got in the front passenger.

Seeing her in the front seat, Daniel smiled slightly as he got into the driver's seat.

The car drove smoothly.

The air was suddenly quiet. Daniel's defined fingers tapped the steering wheel intermittently. "So, Ms. Hughes did you really break up with Raymond?"

"Is there such a thing as a fake breakup?" Margaret pursed her lips and retorted.

Daniel chuckled. "You two have broken up and gotten back together so many times, and I'm used to it."

"This time it's real. There's no turning back," Margaret said, looking down at her legs under her skirt, with a bitter smile.

"Ms. Hughes, I know it's your personal matter, and I shouldn't interfere. But as your friend, I want to advise you to reconsider. If Raymond treated you badly because he was dealing with Sarah, maybe you should give him a chance to change. He might learn to cherish you after this."

Margaret's eyes filled with deeper mockery.

Raymond hadn't learned anything, except how to hurt her.

If she hadn't remembered anything, maybe they would be happy.

But now, she was so clear-headed. How could she continue? Staying with him meant her parents died in vain. Her suffering was for nothing.

Besides, Raymond had made it clear he was just playing with her and wasn't interested anymore.

Why did she degrade herself further?

"Life is tough. Having someone you love and who loves you is rare. Living is hard, but finding warmth in love makes life fulfilling. Right and wrong are just different perspectives. You should ask yourself if you still love him and want to spend your life with him."

Mr. Taylor, what did he offer you to speak for him?" Margaret looked at him, clearly displeased.

Daniel laughed. "I'm on your side. As your friend, I naturally hope you have no regrets. If you feel offended, I won't mention it again."

Raymond was a great actor, fooling everyone.

Even Daniel thought he loved her deeply.

Margaret's eyes were lifeless. Daniel noticed that she used to have a sparkle in her eyes when Raymond was mentioned. How did it come to this?

"I've regained my memory."

In the hospital parking lot, Margaret unbuckled her seatbelt. As she got out, she suddenly said this.

Daniel's face froze, showing disbelief and concern. "Ms. Hughes, are you okay?"

"I won't die. Mr. Taylor, if you were me, married the wrong person, causing your family to suffer, would you still love? Could you still love?" Margaret's tone was agitated, her fingers clenched into fists. "So now he has leukemia, it's karma. I feel sick and nauseous knowing I have his liver inside me."

Daniel looked at her with pity. "Ms. Hughes—"

"No need to comfort me. I won't fall. I'm here today to reclaim The Hughes Group. I'll take over The Hughes Group and carry on my father's legacy. From now on, I'll live for responsibility, not love, like a fool." Margaret held back her tears and got out.

She wiped her tears and walked into the elevator.

In the hospital room, she saw Raymond again. He looked worse than yesterday, wearing a striped hospital gown, his lips and face devoid of color.

Their gazes collided across the room.
