Chapter 459 The Birthday Gift for You, Quickly Open and See
Sarah's body tensed up as soon as she heard those words. Standing beside Raymond, she quickly denied it before he could even speak. "No way!"
Raymond glanced at her, narrowing his eyes.
Realizing she had misspoken, she quickly softened her tone. "Raymond, it's not that I'm scared or feeling guilty. I just want you to stay with me. My forehead hurts a lot. Can you take me to the hospital?"
"Raymond, just five minutes! I only need five minutes!" Margaret pleaded again when Raymond remained silent.
Surely, five minutes wasn't too much to ask. She couldn't believe Raymond wouldn't even give her that.
They used to be so in love, so close.
Raymond's cold gaze shifted between Sarah and Margaret. Just then, Alvin entered the room, followed by a few uniformed security guards.
Alvin's brows furrowed when he saw Margaret, clearly surprised by her presence.
With a single look from Alvin, the security guards understood and quickly moved to restrain Margaret, attempting to drag her out.
She cried out, her voice breaking, "Raymond, you won't even give me five minutes. Raymond, you'll regret this. Keeping that viper by your side, you'll regret it."
Sarah bit her lip, her arm hanging at her side, muscles tense, her nails digging into her palm.
If Raymond weren't here, she would have dealt with Margaret herself by now.
"Wait!" Raymond's voice cut through the tension as Margaret was being led out.
Margaret's eyes lit up with hope. Was Raymond willing to listen to her explanation?
She shook off the security guards and ran to Raymond, but his gaze remained cold and stern. "Five minutes. If you can't give me a satisfactory explanation, I'll have you thrown in jail."
Margaret's face turned even paler at his words.
"So you can still leave now," he added.
But she couldn't leave. If she did, what would happen to Raymond? Would he continue to be deceived by Sarah?
She couldn't just stand by and watch.
"I agree," Margaret murmured.
Sarah, feeling uneasy, was about to speak when Raymond gently touched her hair and spoke first. "It's just five minutes. Don't worry. You go to the hospital and get your forehead treated. Alvin will take you. I'll come pick you up as soon as I'm done here."
Those words felt like a knife to Sarah's heart.
He was going to take another woman home right in front of her?
Sarah wanted to be angry, but she didn't dare. She could only force a smile. "I'll wait for you to take me to the hospital."
"Alright." Raymond then turned to Alvin. "Take Margaret to the meeting room and get her some of her favorite desserts."
"Get it, Mr. Howard," Alvin nodded.
Everyone from the executive office left.
The large, empty room suddenly became very quiet.
Raymond walked to the edge of his desk, noticing some dried bloodstains. He looked away and sat down in the leather chair behind the desk.
His defined fingers adjusted his tie, then he took off his suit jacket, leaving him in a dark shirt. He rolled up his sleeves to his elbows, revealing his well-toned, attractive arms.
He opened a dark drawer, took out a pack of cigarettes, and placed one between his lips.
His pale fingers flicked the lighter, and a yellow-blue flame appeared, slowly consuming the end of the cigarette.
The motion was fluid and seamless.
White smoke rose, curling around him.
Margaret felt like she couldn't see Raymond clearly through the smoke. She wanted to see him clearly, so she took determined steps toward him.
Her steps were firm.
When she reached the edge of the desk, she heard him say coldly, "Stay right there."
Margaret's steps halted abruptly.
She looked at his handsome face, fragmented by the smoke.
Even so, seeing him still made her heart ache.
She thought about all they had been through, the life-and-death situations, how she had lost her memory, and how he had gone gray worrying about her. She remembered nothing but him.
She had worked so hard to get better and come back to him, only to find Sarah by his side.
Sarah's words had confirmed it—Raymond was the mute boy she had sponsored at the orphanage before she lost her memory.
One Sarah had disrupted their happiness.
He had leukemia, in its late stages.
How did he get it?
Did Sarah poison him?
Seeing his expressionless face and the cold look in his eyes, Margaret felt her eyes well up with tears, which soon spilled over, cascading down her pale cheeks and splashing onto her hands.
She stood there, feeling exposed and vulnerable.
She wiped her tears with the back of her hand, but the more she wiped, the more the tears flowed.
Raymond, through the smoke, coldly watched her. Then he glanced at his watch. "Two minutes have passed. Are you planning to cry for five minutes?"
Margaret snapped out of it. She couldn't waste the precious time she had fought for.
She took a deep breath, hastily wiping away her tears, her throat aching.
She opened her black handbag and took out a red box, placing it on the desk and pushing it toward him.
Raymond leaned back in his chair, still silent, watching coldly.
But she didn't mind. She smiled through her tears. "Your birthday is coming up, Raymond. This is your birthday present. Open it."
Even though she had lost her memory, she remembered Raymond's likes, his birthday, and their sweet college memories.
"I got this for you while I was receiving treatment abroad. I thought I'd give it to you when we reunited. But I never got the chance until now. I don't know what happened, but when I woke up, Daniel was with me. I had lost my memory, but I still remembered you. You know, it was our memories that got me through those tough, lonely days abroad."
She continued, "Daniel said you were lucky to be loved by me, that even if I forgot everyone else, I'd remember you. It's fate. I know you're angry, angry that I disappeared for a month, right? I wanted to come back sooner, but my health wouldn't allow it. We've fought and been upset for so long, Raymond. Let's call a truce. Let's not waste any more time hurting each other."
Raymond, almost involuntarily, picked up the box with his cigarette-holding fingers and opened it. He was stunned. Inside was a watch.
