Chapter 376: Margaret, It's Up to You

"Ray, don't talk like that. Maggie's still waiting to be your wife," Alvin said, frowning. He'd seen their relationship grow over time.

He'd witnessed their love, their struggles, and everything in between. Getting to this point hadn't been easy, and giving up now was unthinkable.

Raymond tightened his grip on his cigarette. The thought of Maggie becoming his wife was a beautiful dream, almost too good to be true.

"Maggie isn't after your money. She just wants you by her side."

Raymond opened his mouth to respond, but his phone rang. He answered it, and after a few urgent words from the caller, his expression changed dramatically. "I'm on my way to the hospital."

He hung up, threw on a jacket, and rushed out of the hotel suite.

Seeing Raymond's worried face, Alvin didn't ask questions and followed him to the hospital.

Outside the operating room, Daniel and a few nurses were waiting. Daniel paced anxiously, wondering why Raymond hadn't arrived yet.

Just as Daniel was about to call him, he saw Raymond rushing over. "How's Maggie?" Raymond asked.

"She's in surgery. David's with her. You need to change and get ready for the operation," Daniel said, his suit jacket unbuttoned, his hands resting on his narrow waist, his tone urgent.

A nurse led Raymond to change into a hospital gown. He then lay on a gurney, ready to be wheeled into the operating room.

Raymond grabbed Daniel's wrist. Daniel looked at him. "What are you doing?"

"What I told you before still stands. If I don't make it, please take care of Maggie," Raymond said, his eyes serious.

Daniel laughed bitterly. "You haven't even gone in yet, and you're already talking like this? Where's your courage?"

"Anything can happen. I can gamble on many things, but not when it comes to her. You know what David said. Daniel, if you don't promise me, I can't go into surgery with peace of mind," Raymond murmured, his throat tight.

Daniel was about to respond when a medical staff member checked their watch and interrupted, "Mr. Taylor, you should agree. Ms. Hughes can't wait any longer. If we keep delaying, she might not make it."

Daniel swallowed his refusal. He knew Maggie wanted Raymond by her side, not him. But the urgency in the staff member's voice made him reconsider. He pried Raymond's hand off his wrist and patted his shoulder. "I promise. But I hope you can protect your own woman."

"Thank you," Raymond said, visibly relieved.

The operating room doors opened, and Raymond was wheeled inside.

He saw Maggie lying unconscious on a nearby table, looking peaceful as if she were just sleeping.

David, wearing a mask and protective gear, glanced at him. "Mr. Howard, we meet again."

Rufus handed David a syringe filled with anesthetic.

Raymond's eyes widened as he saw the liquid in the syringe.

"Scared?" David's voice was calm. "It's not too late to back out. Removing an entire left liver is daunting for anyone."

After all, life is precious.

"David, I have a request."

David didn't respond.

Under the bright surgical lights, Raymond squinted but spoke firmly. "Prioritize Maggie's surgery. Don't worry about me. If anything happens to me on the table, it's not your fault."

"Maggie must get the liver transplant."

David paused, looking at him for a moment before replying, "I can't guarantee success. There's a chance neither of you will make it. It's all up to fate."

The needle pierced Raymond's scalp.

He felt a sharp pain, then numbness.

As the anesthesia took effect, he drifted into a deep sleep, unaware of anything.

Outside the operating room, Daniel waited anxiously, alternating between sitting and pacing. His assistant, watching him, remarked, "Mr. Taylor, it's someone else's wife having surgery. Why are you so nervous? People might think it's your wife in there."

Daniel shot him a cold look, and the assistant quickly shut up, realizing his mistake. He couldn't understand why Daniel was so invested in a married woman when so many single women were interested in him.

Alvin, standing nearby, had initially been wary of Daniel, suspecting his intentions towards Maggie. But seeing Daniel's role in arranging Maggie's surgery changed his perspective. He spoke respectfully, "Mr. Taylor, Maggie and Ray will be fine. Don't worry."

"You didn't talk to me like this before," Daniel noted, finally looking at Alvin.

Alvin apologized, "I was wrong before."

At that moment, Daniel's phone rang.

He saw the caller ID, frowned, and ignored the call.

When it rang again, he turned off his phone.

Then his assistant's phone rang. The assistant answered, then looked at Daniel. "Mr. Taylor, it's your father."

Daniel took the phone, his face cold, and walked to the stairwell, closing the door behind him.

Cade's voice on the other end was harsh. "Where have you been these past few days? You haven't been to The Taylor Group. Are you rebelling? You missed the arranged date! And now you're neglecting your work? Remember, you're representing The Taylor Family now, not some illegitimate child. Think about the consequences of your actions!"

Daniel's lips curled into a mocking smile. "If you dislike me so much, why did you bring me back to The Taylor Family?"

"If my son hadn't had that accident, you wouldn't be here. You're nothing compared to your brother. He was a genius, but his life was cut short. And you? You have nothing but a longer lifespan. Get back to The Taylor Group now!"
