Chapter 489 Just Hearing Her Voice, He Could Hardly Control Himself

"I'm the chairman of The Taylor Group, Daniel's father. Mr. Howard, I don't know what Daniel did to upset you, but you've pulled all your funding and cut ties with The Taylor Group," Cade's voice, though aged, was firm over the phone.

Cade was a well-known figure, much older than Raymond. It was humiliating for him to be so deferential to someone younger, but he had no choice.

As a businessman, Cade's pride was secondary. What mattered was appeasing Raymond and restoring the partnership with The Taylor Group.

Raymond sneered, "Didn't Mr. Daniel Taylor tell you why?"

"Mr. Howard, Daniel didn't say anything, and we couldn't get any answers."

"I've got other things to do, so I won't waste time on your family drama," Raymond scoffed, about to hang up when Cade hurriedly said, "Mr. Howard, please wait."

"I heard you visited Daniel's house a few days ago looking for Ms. Hughes?" Cade probed with a smile.

Raymond squinted, remaining silent, waiting for Cade to continue.

Cade was quick to catch on and continued, "Mr. Howard, you must have misunderstood. Ms. Hughes and Daniel are just friends. Ms. Hughes is your ex-wife, and Daniel is just an illegitimate child. He doesn't deserve Ms. Hughes. Even if Ms. Hughes is down on her luck, she's still your person. We, The Taylor Family, wouldn't dare get involved."

"Nothing more to say, I'm hanging up," Raymond said, ready to end the call.

Cade quickly added, "Ms. Hughes has indeed moved out. I have her current address. I'll send it to your phone right away."

Raymond hung up.

Soon, his phone buzzed.

Sure enough, the same number had sent him an address. It was in a remote area, almost in the suburbs. He felt a mix of anger and concern. A young woman renting a place so far out, wasn't she worried about safety?

He opened the desk drawer, took out a cigarette, and lit it, exhaling white smoke slowly.

His phone rang again.

He picked it up casually and answered.

"Raymond, what did Daniel do to you? Why are you treating him like this? I've already let you and Sarah be together, what more do you want? I've respected your wishes, not disturbed you, not called you. What are you up to now?" Margaret's voice was angry and cold.

Raymond was momentarily stunned. He hadn't expected to receive a call from the person he longed for so much.

He bit down harder on the cigarette in his mouth.

His eyes reddened slightly, his throat tight with emotion.

It was Margaret's voice, the voice he had missed over and over again.

Just hearing her voice made his heart race uncontrollably.

His nose burned with unshed tears, and he didn't speak for a long time.

"Raymond, if you have a problem, come at me. Why are you making innocent people suffer? Why aren't you saying anything? Speak up. What will it take for you to leave The Taylor Group and Daniel alone?"

In the past, hearing her plead for another man would have made him jealous, and he would have kissed her forcefully.

But now, he felt more gratitude. He was grateful to be alive.

It turned out that just hearing the voice of the person you love, even if it's not pleasant, can be satisfying.

He didn't listen to her aggressive questioning. How long had it been since he had a proper meal?

He couldn't even remember the last time he ate.

He remembered it was the day before she jumped off the building. She had eaten the soup he fed her, saying she wanted to remember his face, silently bidding him farewell.

"Raymond, what are you up to now? I'm talking to you," her voice grew louder, more aggrieved.

Raymond took a drag on his cigarette and suggested, "Margaret, do you remember the last time we had dinner together?"

"What?" She was taken aback.

He continued, "Let's have dinner tonight. What do you want to eat?"

"I won't have dinner with you," she refused angrily.

"Then I'll make the arrangements," Raymond said, smiling. "The Taylor Group is in chaos because The Hughes Group pulled out. If I don't restore cooperation, do you think the board will let Daniel keep his position as president?"

"Raymond, are you threatening me?"

"Consider it that."

"You're despicable. How did I not see before how dirty and underhanded you are?" Margaret laughed bitterly.

Being scolded by her felt like a blessing.

His days were numbered, and opportunities to be scolded were few.

He just wanted to have dinner with the woman he loved, like when they first met. If that made him despicable, so be it.

"Margaret, see you tonight. I'll have Alvin contact you. Make sure to dress nicely."

Realizing that scolding him was futile, Margaret asked before hanging up, "If I have dinner with you tonight, will you leave Daniel alone and restore cooperation with The Taylor Group?"

"Yes."

Hanging up, Raymond felt triumphant, while Margaret was furious.

She couldn't believe she had already conceded. Her villa was taken over by Sarah, and she had moved into a small, shabby rental.

Just when she planned to cut ties and start anew, Raymond came to bother her again.

He used Daniel to threaten her, compelling her to appear.

She was angry at his audacity, at how he could bully her as he pleased, and even angrier at herself for being powerless.

Her eyes reddened instantly, but she would only go to dinner. She wouldn't agree to anything else.

Daniel was a good person; she couldn't ignore him.

Alvin contacted her, bringing her the latest black dress and high heels. He also arranged for a makeup artist and hairstylist to come to her place.

She didn't want to do any of this, but Alvin reminded her to consider Daniel, so she took a deep breath and let them do their work.

At eight o'clock in the evening, Alvin drove her to a luxurious restaurant.

She recognized the place. It was where she and Raymond often dined, and because it was expensive, she always paid during their relationship.

Raymond was poor back then, and to protect his pride, she would transfer money to him so he could pay.

He had held her hand, saying, "Margaret, you're so good to me. When we get married, I'll treat you well for life."

Instead of a wedding, she saw him taking wedding photos with Sarah, getting engaged to Sarah, throwing her into jail, and not recognizing her.

Margaret felt the restaurant's decor was ironic, a reminder of how things had changed.

A waiter in a white shirt led her through the main hall to the backyard. The backyard was a grassy area, with colorful lights hanging from the trees. Tonight, the stars were out, and the moon was big and round.

The night breeze was cold on her bare arms and slender legs. She hugged herself tightly and looked up to see the handsome man sitting at the dining table.
