Chapter 453 How About Watching the Roses Bloom Before Leaving?
"Mr. Taylor, what's up?" Margaret asked, eyeing him curiously.
Daniel snapped back to reality and just stared at her.
She asked again, "Mr. Taylor, are you thinking about someone you like?"
"Yeah," he replied with a bitter smile.
Margaret was intrigued. "Did you break up?"
"We were never together."
"Did you have a crush on her?"
"Yeah."
"Why didn't you tell her?" Margaret asked, puzzled.
Daniel responded with a question, "If you were me, would you tell her?"
Margaret thought for a moment and answered, "Definitely."
"Even if you might get rejected?"
"Well, if it were me, I'd still do it. How would you know if there's a chance unless you try? Sure, it might fail, but it's better than looking back with regret, right? That's how it was with Raymond. I liked him first, and if I had been more reserved, I probably wouldn't have pursued him."
Margaret smiled as she talked about Raymond, her eyes sparkling. "But I think pride is overrated. Happiness is more important. Where there's a will, there's a way. Look, I won Raymond over, didn't I? If I, a girl, can be so brave, why are you so scared?"
Daniel chuckled, "Have you ever thought that if you hadn't been so brave, maybe you wouldn't have experienced so much pain?"
She dismissed his comment, "Even if I could do it all over again, I'd still go after him. It's fate. Even after losing my memory, I forgot everyone but him."
As she thought about Raymond with another woman, her mood became complicated. She paused and continued, "As for pain, isn't that just life? One hardship after another. There's no such thing as smooth sailing. I believe that what Raymond and I are going through now are tests from above. Once we overcome these obstacles, we'll be happy together forever. Life is mostly filled with sorrow and pain, with only a few happy days. But I can endure these hardships with the happy memories of Raymond."
Daniel's eyes grew sadder as he listened to her talk about Raymond, her smile so bright.
Raymond had hurt her so much, yet she still pressed forward.
But all Daniel wanted was for her to be happy.
As long as she was happy, whether he confessed his feelings or not didn't matter.
He had hidden his feelings for so many years; he should be used to it by now.
Still, his heart ached, but he could bear it.
Margaret stood up, thinking his sadness was for the woman he had a crush on, and asked, "Does she like someone else?"
"She got married and is now divorced."
"Then you should go after her," Margaret urged.
Daniel smiled, "But her heart is still with her ex-husband."
"Oh, I see. Then don't pursue her. Don't be a homewrecker; that's unethical. There are plenty of other girls out there. When I meet someone suitable, I'll introduce you," Margaret said, trying to comfort him.
Yes, her heart was with Raymond.
How could he take advantage of that? How could he be a homewrecker?
Confessing his feelings would only make her uncomfortable and think he had ulterior motives.
Maybe they wouldn't even be friends anymore.
Daniel, didn't hope for too much. Margaret wasn't someone you should desire.
With that thought, Daniel changed the subject and glanced at the clothes in the suitcase. "All packed?"
"Yeah, all set."
"Has he contacted you?" Daniel asked again.
Margaret picked up her phone from the bed, nervously unlocking it.
She opened WhatsApp.
No messages or calls from Raymond.
That was weird.
When she had gone to the movies with a suitor to annoy him, he had been so angry that he hid in her dorm room, waiting to have sex with her as a lesson.
He had even threatened that if she didn't keep her distance from other men, she wouldn't be able to get out of bed for two months.
Why was he so calm now?
Her eyes showed disappointment.
Daniel noticed and comforted her, "Maybe he's on his way. Raymond still loves you."
He meant it sincerely, without any doubt.
If Raymond didn't love her, he wouldn't have donated his entire liver.
He wouldn't have run to pray after hearing she had jumped off a building.
He wouldn't have appeared at her funeral, his hair turning white overnight.
As an observer, Daniel saw clearly that Raymond's love for Margaret was no less than hers for him.
His words eased much of Margaret's anxiety and unease.
Yeah, Raymond loved her.
He just wasn't good at expressing it.
He must be on his way.
He was a man of action, not just words.
Margaret picked up her suitcase. "I'll go downstairs to wait for him."
"No rush. Wait until he arrives. Besides, it's snowing outside and really cold," Daniel said, blocking her path.
But she insisted, "I want him to see me first. Mr. Taylor, you don't understand. This is love."
He understood better than anyone.
Seeing she wouldn't listen, Daniel relented and reached for her suitcase. "Let me help you."
"It's too much trouble," Margaret said, not letting go.
His fingers brushed against hers, and Margaret awkwardly pulled back. "Really, it's fine."
"I need to hand you over to him personally."
"Thanks."
"Ms. Hughes, we're friends. No need to thank me."
Daniel carried the suitcase and escorted her out of the bedroom.
Margaret descended the spiral staircase and saw the butler still tidying up the living room. He was very kind to her, so she felt she should greet him before leaving. "Sir, you're still up so late?"
The butler looked up, saw Margaret, and smiled. "About to rest."
His eyes fell on Daniel behind her, then on the suitcase in Daniel's hand, and finally on Margaret. "Ms. Hughes, where are you going so late?"
"I've been a bother these past few days. It's time for me to leave," Margaret said.
The butler frowned slightly and tried to engage her. "Ms. Hughes, we're about to plant a batch of roses. They're very beautiful when they bloom. Why not stay and see them?"
Daniel's expression tightened as he realized the butler was trying to help him keep her.
But Margaret didn't catch the hint, thinking it was just polite conversation. "No need. We have roses at The Hughes Manor too. They're beautiful when they bloom."
The butler wanted to say more, feeling sorry for Daniel.
Just then, Daniel spoke up.
