Chapter 26

"They're both rockin' matching outfits, gotta be a couple, right?"

"This chick looks straight outta some royal family."

Some waitresses was keep flattering them.

Sarah gave a shy smile, lips pressed together, but when she glanced at Raymond, he was frowning and not touching his food.

Sarah looked at those waitresses, her smile fading a bit. "Nah, you got it wrong. We're just friends. He's already married."

"Oh, gotcha. That's a bummer."

"You two look great match, just friends? What a pity."

The waitresses shook their heads, sighing as they cleared the empty plates from the private room.

"Raymond, these are all your fave dishes. Why aren't you eating? The food here is bomb." Sarah smiled, looking puzzled at the serious Raymond across from her.

Raymond shot her a cold look. "Did you forget what I told you?"

The room went dead silent, awkward vibes filling the air.

Sarah's fingers tightened a bit. After a moment, she forced a smile. "I do."

"Then say it." He kept staring at her coldly, his gaze sending chills down her spine.

Sarah pressed her lips together. "You said you wouldn't make any promises to me, and we wouldn't have any real relationship until your divorce. Only when we actually get married would you sleep with me."

"If you can't wait, go find another guy to marry. I won't hold it against you." Raymond's eyes were icy.

She shook her head, reaching out pitifully, trying to grab Raymond's hand on the table. "Raymond, it was an accident. I didn't ask them to say that. I wouldn't dare."

Raymond's hand subtly dodged hers.

Sarah said, "When you were in the orphanage, I had your back, sent you birthday cakes every year, and even got you into a better orphanage. Later, when you met Margaret and started dating her, I kept waiting for you, for so many years. I'm used to it. Waiting a few more years is no biggie for me."

Talking about the past, Raymond's tense expression softened a bit. After his parents' tragic death, he was stuck in an orphanage.

Bullied, isolated, no friends, it was Sarah's presence that kept him going.

His way of paying her back was to give her marriage, a title, a home.

He picked up her favorite dish and put it in her bowl. "Let's dig in."

After dinner, Sarah opened a big cake box, revealing a multi-layered cake with candles on top.

At that moment, Raymond felt a twinge of emotion. This was the 16th birthday Sarah had spent with him, the 16th cake she had given him.

Sarah used a knife to cut the cake into pieces, giving one to Raymond and one to Alvin.

Alvin hesitated, but when Raymond nodded, he had no choice but to take it. After a bite, Alvin couldn't help but say the cake wasn't as good as the ones Margaret made.

Margaret would make a cake for Raymond by hand every year on this day, but today, it seemed she didn't make a move.

As Raymond ate the cake, memories of Margaret celebrating his birthday flashed through his mind.

Margaret was stubborn and never bought cakes from outside. She believed handmade cakes were more sincere.

He celebrated his birthday twice every year, eating Margaret's cake first and then going out to eat Sarah's cake, year after year.

After finishing the cake, Raymond, not in high spirits, took Sarah home. Sarah wanted him to come in for a drink, but he declined coldly, saying he was exhausted.

Alvin drove, and the tall streetlights cast an orange glow that filtered through the car window, lighting up Raymond's profile in the back seat. He was lonely and tired.

It was already ten o'clock, and he hadn't gotten any birthday wishes from Margaret.

A wave of irritation surged in his heart.

Then he said, "Head to the Hughes Villa."
