Chapter 379 Can I Go See Him Now?
Daniel froze for a moment. This was a chance he really didn't want. Messing with someone else's relationship felt wrong. He wished that arrogant Raymond would just wake up, because even if Margaret had lost her memory, he knew he could never take Raymond's place in her heart.
Raymond was the guy Margaret loved, not him.
Daniel's throat tightened, his Adam's apple bobbing as he tried to speak, but he couldn't get any words out. David had already said everything; nothing he could say would change anything.
Back in the hospital room, Margaret stood up from the edge of the bed as soon as she saw him.
"Why are you out of bed?" Daniel asked, worried.
Margaret shook her head, her smile bright. "The doctor said I'm getting better and can get up. Daniel, you promised that if I ate well and took my medicine, you'd take me to see him. Can we go now?"
Seeing the excitement and joy in her eyes, Daniel's heart ached like it was being stabbed.
A few days ago, when Margaret woke up, he had lied to her, afraid she wouldn't take her medicine if she couldn't see Raymond.
He had thought Raymond would wake up. He hadn't expected Raymond's condition to get worse, or that David would be preparing for the worst, that Raymond could die in the ICU at any moment.
Raymond's current state was awful, and he didn't want Margaret to see him like this. Daniel had thought about this too.
Margaret's surgery had gone well, but she still needed to recover. She couldn't afford to get upset or anxious.
"Daniel, say something. Can you take me to see him? Or tell me when he can come back to see me?" Margaret's tone grew more urgent when he didn't respond.
She stared at him intently. Why was he hesitating?
Daniel looked at her for a moment before saying quietly, "Okay, I'll call him. Just wait a sec."
Margaret's eyelashes fluttered as she touched the pocket of her hospital gown. Her phone was missing.
But she didn't think much of it. A few minutes later, Daniel came back to the room, looking gloomy.
Margaret already had a bad feeling, but she forced a smile and asked, "Can we go see him?"
"Margaret, Mr. Howard is still dealing with some business abroad. Something came up unexpectedly, and he needs more time," Daniel lied, each word burning his throat.
Lying wasn't easy.
Margaret's face fell. "What happened? Is he in danger?"
"No, it's just work. Don't worry, with Mr. Howard's skills, he'll handle it."
"How much longer will it take?"
"From what he said, it might be a while."
"Then I'll go find him."
"Margaret, Mr. Howard wants you to stay here and get better. If you go, he won't be able to focus on his work."
"I just want to see him for a moment! Just one moment, and I'll come back!" Margaret insisted.
Daniel couldn't respond. Lying was an art that required a clear conscience and smooth words, and he was naturally bad at it.
Afraid of saying too much, Daniel comforted her briefly before leaving the room to get some air.
In the afternoon, Alvin brought food for Margaret. As he set out the utensils and watched her eat, Margaret noticed his red eyes and asked, "Why have you been crying?"
Alvin's throat tightened. It was because Raymond wasn't waking up, and they were preparing for the worst. He couldn't help but cry. He had been with Raymond for years and had deep feelings for him.
"Is something wrong with Raymond? Is he in danger?" Margaret's eyes reddened, tears falling into her food.
Seeing her cry, Alvin's heart ached. Before he could speak, she continued, "Alvin, if something's wrong with Raymond, you can't hide it from me! We're husband and wife; we should face everything together!"
"Mrs. Howard, Mr. Raymond Howard is fine. He's just delayed by work. But he knows your surgery was successful and is very happy," Alvin said respectfully, lowering his eyes to hide his emotions. "Mrs. Howard, please eat. If you don't eat well, I can't report back to Mr. Howard."
Margaret trusted Alvin. He was Raymond's closest assistant. If he said everything was fine, it must be true. She needed to listen, eat well, and wait for Raymond to come back and see her healthy and whole.
Margaret ate her meal in large bites, even though she had no appetite, finishing everything.
As Alvin cleaned up, Margaret asked, "Have you seen my phone?"
Alvin's hands froze.
"Did I lose it?" Margaret asked, confused.
He had taken her phone to prevent her from contacting Raymond and discovering the truth. Now she was asking for it back. If he continued to withhold it, she might get suspicious.
"Your phone is with me. I'll bring it to you right away."
The phone was quickly returned to Margaret.
She eagerly charged it and turned it on, only to find that Raymond hadn't called or messaged her since he left. Not a single message. She checked WhatsApp and other social apps, but his chat was empty.
Raymond was so busy? He must know her surgery was successful. How could he not even send a greeting?
Margaret's eyelid twitched. She told herself not to overthink it and to trust him. If he didn't reach out, she could.
Excitedly, Margaret dialed the number she knew by heart. The call connected.
At that moment, Raymond's phone was in Daniel's hand. He was at the grocery store, picking out Margaret's favorite fruits. Her call was unexpected but not surprising. He hesitated for two seconds, then hung up.
Using Raymond's name, he sent a text. He hadn't logged into Raymond's social apps; he wasn't one to invade privacy. If not for Margaret's call, he would never have touched Raymond's phone.
In the hospital room, Margaret held her phone, ready to say so much, but the call was cut off. Raymond had hung up on her!
Margaret was devastated, gripping her phone tightly, her fingers turning white. She couldn't believe Raymond would hang up on her, but the screen showed the call had ended.
Margaret was angry. How could he do this? He had been missing for days, and now he hung up when she called. But she held back her temper and dialed again.
If he didn't answer, she would keep calling until he did.
