Chapter 37 The Eyes Will Turn Hazel

Margaret spotted her and was pretty taken aback, then she grinned. "What are you doing here?"

On her way, she kept bumping into Ashley, like, way too often. Was Ashley tailing her?

Ashley flashed a smile. "I've been feeling kinda down, so I've been wandering around. Didn't expect to see you here, Mrs. Hughes. We keep running into each other."

Hearing that, Margaret shrugged off her suspicions. "What do you want for your birthday?"

Ashley had been played by some jerk and was now trying to clear her head. How could she doubt Ashley?

There was a quick flicker of something in Ashley's eyes, but it was gone in a flash. "Mrs. Hughes, just seeing you is the best birthday gift. But hey, what would you like as a gift?"

Margaret shot back, "You wanna give me a gift?"

Ashley didn't deny it. "Yeah, and it's something you'll like. But it'll take more than twenty days to get here."

Margaret listened, not showing much reaction, her eyes calm. "No need, I probably won't be around to get your gift."

By then, she'd likely be dead, turned to ashes.

Ashley looked shocked. Had she figured something out?

Ashley bit her lip. "Then Mrs. Hughes, got any unfulfilled wishes? Maybe I can help."

After a bit, Margaret calmly said, "If possible, I'd like to leave this world with as little pain as possible."

The night Margaret found out she had late-stage liver cancer, she had looked up all the info.

She'd be in serious pain. Nausea, fluid in her abdomen, trouble breathing, and in the end, she'd only be able to breathe through her mouth.

Her eyes would turn hazel too.

She didn't have the fluid or breathing issues yet, but she knew the agony was coming sooner or later.

Ashley's eyelids twitched, and she swallowed. "Mrs. Hughes."

Margaret snapped out of it and laughed. "Why am I telling you all this? Where are you planning to celebrate your birthday?"

"Eldoria, not far from here. You can find it on GPS," Ashley said.

Margaret nodded. "Alright, got some stuff to handle now. See you tonight."

Ashley said, "Okay."

Margaret turned and left, holding a route map drawn by the cops, looking at it as she walked.

Ashley shouted from behind, "Mrs. Hughes, I'll be setting off fireworks at Eldoria at 9 PM. You gotta come!"

Margaret didn't look back and made an OK gesture.

Ashley watched her go and murmured, "Mrs. Hughes, I'll make sure you leave this world with less pain. It won't hurt much."

She pulled out a knife from her pocket and tossed it into a nearby street trash can.

Ashley went to a used car market and bought a junker.

Ashley just needed to crash Margaret once, and she wouldn't feel any pain. This was the only thing she could do for Margaret.

At the Hope Haven Orphanage, when Margaret explained why she was there, the staff led her to the office of the director, Lisa Moore.

Lisa was a middle-aged woman with reading glasses and slightly chubby cheeks.

She tapped on her phone and looked up, puzzled, at Margaret. "Mrs. Hughes, you haven't donated anything to our orphanage."

Margaret frowned. "No way, I've donated at least a million bucks over the past few years."

Even though she hadn't personally donated the money or done charity work, the money had definitely been sent.

"Mrs. Hughes, got any receipts? Our orphanage issues receipts for all donations," Lisa asked.
