Chapter 45 Tonight, He Is Hers

The Hughes Group, CEO's Office.

Raymond asked, "How's the investigation I asked you to conduct?"

He sat on the sofa, holding the phone, his gaze fixed on the TV on the wall, where Margaret was being harassed by the media, looking helpless.

His voice was soft, expressionless, dressed in a white shirt and black pants, exuding an air of elegance and maturity.

Next to him, Sarah saw the media report on TV and was furious. Ashley, that bitch, dared to disobey her.

Despite her inner agitation, Sarah's smile was as warm as spring. She thoughtfully poured a cup of coffee and handed it to Raymond.

Taking the cup, Raymond played with it in his hand.

Alvin's apologetic voice came through the phone. "I couldn't find out who informed the media that surrounded Mrs. Howard at The Hughes Group last time."

"Useless." Raymond sneered coldly and hung up.

Sarah looked at him uneasily and probed, "Raymond, what are you investigating?"

Raymond glanced at her indifferently. "Take a guess."

Her heart tightened. Could it be about Ashley's car accident?

Sarah said, "I'm so dumb, how could I guess? Raymond, no matter what you do, self-preservation should come first. You can't get into trouble."

Sarah smiled gently. As soon as she said this, she could visibly see Raymond's tense facial lines soften a bit, and his sharp gaze became much gentler.

Raymond withdrew his gaze and took a sip of the coffee in his cup.

Sarah's eyes showed a faint joy, suppressing the excitement in her heart.

She had drugged the coffee. Tonight, he would be hers.

Sarah said, "Raymond, Margaret almost got into trouble. You should go see her."

"She's always been high and mighty, looking down on you, and you still speak for her?" Raymond's eyes turned cold at the mention of Margaret's name.

His gaze was like a knife, making Sarah shiver. She smiled gently. "After all, we've been good friends since childhood. Besides, you two aren't divorced yet; you're still her husband. It's your duty to care for her."

She added, "Raymond, she needs you now. You should go see her."

Raymond placed the cup on the table. "You're talking too much."

His attitude said it all.

Sarah was ecstatic inside. Margaret didn't mean much to him.

She picked up her phone and received a message: [Ms. Martinez, Ashley has been sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. If she wakes up...]

Sarah: [Wait for me; I'll call you.]

Sarah sent the message, turned off her phone, picked up her handbag, and said to Raymond, "Raymond, a good friend invited me to go shopping. I'll leave first."

He didn't try to stop her.

Sarah walked away quickly in her high heels.

She would first deal with Ashley. Raymond had already drunk the drugged coffee; he would definitely come to her tonight.

She was the only woman around him. If he didn't come to her, who else would he go to?

Raymond turned off the TV and tugged at his tie.

He sent a message to Alvin: [Send me the address and room number of the hotel where Margaret is staying.]

Alvin replied instantly: [Yes, Mr. Howard.]

At the police Station, Margaret finished giving her statement and walked out of the police station.

Alvin's car was already gone.

The street was empty, except for the streetlights standing on either side of the road.

The light was dim.

Margaret stepped on the snow, her shadow stretched long by the streetlights.

She didn't know who Ashley was or why she would commit suicide.

She would have to go to the hospital tomorrow and ask Ashley when she woke up.

What was the gift that would take half a month to receive?

Her phone suddenly rang.

Margaret took out her phone from her down jacket pocket, thinking it was a call from Raymond.

She looked at the screen and smiled bitterly.

How could that be Raymond? He would only show up when she was dead and needed someone to collect her body.

If he were going to show up, he would have done so by now.

The phone vibrated insistently in her hand.

She pressed the answer button and put the phone to her ear. "Mom."

Nancy's voice was tearful over the phone. "Margaret, are you okay?"

Margaret pursed her lips, stepping on the snow. "I'm fine, Mom."

Nancy cried out, "I saw it on TV. Why did you go to Eastlake City? It's such a remote place with poor security. What were you doing there? You scared me to death. Your father is already in trouble, and if something happens to you, how will I live? You're my only daughter."

Nancy cried and complained, "What grudge do you have with her? She tried to run you over with a car. She's simply despicable."

Margaret's eyelid twitched. "Mom, how do you know she tried to run me over?"

"Eldoria has surveillance cameras. The media found the footage. That car was a scrap car with no license plate. She clearly intended to kill you! The strange thing is, she suddenly changed her mind and turned the steering wheel!" Nancy told Margaret everything she had observed.

Margaret's nose tingled. Someone still cared about her safety; someone still didn't want her to die. "Mom, I was lucky. I'm fine."

Nancy cried and pleaded, her voice trembling, "Come back quickly, okay? Buy a ticket and come home tomorrow. It's too chaotic outside. By the way, the doctor said your father is about to wake up. You don't want him to wake up and find out you're dead, do you? Margaret, you're our only child. Don't take risks, and don't do anything foolish. Think about us. We can't take any more stress."

Margaret's throat tightened, her voice hoarse and uncomfortable. "Okay, I'll buy a ticket and come back tomorrow. I'll visit Dad in the hospital."

She returned to the hotel at midnight.

She swiped her room card and wearily pushed open the door to the presidential suite.

But she saw that all the lights in the suite were on, as bright as day.

There was also an extra pair of black leather shoes on the shoe cabinet.

Margaret's eyelid twitched, and her heart skipped a beat.

These were the wedding gift she had given Raymond.

She thought, 'Raymond, are you really here this time?'
