Chapter 584 Be Proactive, There Is a Time for Making Love with Anyone
Daniel's heart skipped a beat. Could it be Della?
He turned with the others to look.
Next to the guide stood a girl, dressed in long pants and a long-sleeved shirt despite the sweltering summer heat. She wore a plain straw hat and had just taken off the basket from her back, placing it inside the house.
Her eyes were filled with exhaustion, and her face showed clear signs of weariness.
When Daniel saw her features, his heart, which had been hanging in suspense, shattered into pieces. She wasn't Della.
"Nia, why are you just standing there? Your husband is here, can't you be a bit more enthusiastic?" The woman scolded Nia with a stern face.
Nia frowned upon hearing it was her husband. Although she found the man in front of her handsome, she didn't recognize him. How could he be her husband?
She thought it might be that troublesome man coming to pester her again.
"Mom, stop saying that. I don't know him. He must have mistaken me for someone else."
The woman wanted to scold her more but held back because of the guests. Daniel explained, "Ma'am, this young lady is indeed not the person I'm looking for. The person I'm looking for is named Della. Do you have any other daughters?"
"No, no, I only have this one daughter and a son who's still in school," the woman replied, waving her hand.
Walter exchanged a glance with Daniel and asked the woman again, "Are you sure? There's really no girl named Della around here?"
"No, I've lived here for decades, and there's no one by that name," the woman said firmly.
Walter muttered, "That's strange. How could Ms. Vaughn have left a fake address?"
"Who's Ms. Vaughn?" the woman asked curiously.
Daniel didn't answer directly but instead addressed the middle-aged woman, "Ma'am, I'm sorry. We must have come to the wrong place. Sorry for disturbing you. Please keep the gifts we brought as a token of our apology."
"Sir, you just said you wanted to marry my daughter. If you like the name Della so much, I can have Nia change her name," the woman said, not wanting to let a wealthy man slip away.
Walter chuckled, "Ma'am, are you planning to have your daughter change her name too?"
"That's just a formality. It doesn't matter. As long as my daughter has a good life," the woman said.
Daniel checked his watch. It was already late, almost dinner time.
They had been traveling for days, and there were no hotels or inns around.
The woman suggested they stay the night and leave the next day, saying it would make her feel better about accepting their gifts. Daniel agreed, thinking the family seemed decent enough.
That night, a middle-aged man returned after playing cards. During dinner, he chatted with Daniel and Walter.
The more the man looked at Daniel, the more he liked him, thinking he would be a good match for his daughter. After a few drinks, he started promoting Nia, "Daniel, I really like you. Won't you consider Nia? She's very virtuous."
The atmosphere became awkward.
Nia's hand holding the utensils froze, and she reminded her father, "Dad, can you not ruin dinner like this? It's not like I can't get married."
"What do you know? Adults are talking. Do you think you can find a man on your own? You're already twenty-five, not eighteen," Nia's father scolded her.
Walter glanced at her and rubbed his nose, "Sir, twenty-five isn't that old. I'm thirty and still not married."
Daniel added, "Marriage shouldn't be rushed. Your daughter's happiness is more important."
"Daniel, my daughter is very obedient. She's honest and won't cause trouble. She had a boyfriend before, but they only held hands. She's still a virgin. You rich people want a clean wife, right? My daughter is the cleanest. Unlike some girls in our village who mess around at a young age," Nia's father said with a smile.
Nia felt like her parents were selling her like a commodity. Tears welled up in her eyes, "Can you please stop?"
"You're the only one in the village not married! Your father and I are ashamed to stay here! You're so old and still not married, living off us. Let me tell you, the house is for your brother when he gets married. If you don't get married, how will your brother find a wife?" Nia's mother chimed in.
Nia slammed her utensils on the table and stormed out of the house.
"Where are you running to? If you leave, don't come back!" Nia's mother yelled, not caring about the guests.
The door slammed shut.
Nia's father wanted to say more, but Daniel cut him off, "Sir, to be honest, I already have someone I love. I will only marry her. I'm sorry."
Nia's parents looked disappointed.
"But my friend here is still single," Daniel said, pointing to Walter, using him as a shield.
Walter, who was dining, choked on his drink upon hearing this.
However, Nia's parents seemed to look down on Walter, thinking he was just Daniel's sidekick, and didn't respond.
Dinner ended with everyone lost in their own thoughts.
After dinner, Nia's mother showed Daniel and Walter to their respective guest rooms.
Daniel's room was more furnished, while Walter's was simpler. Walter didn't mind it.
Shortly after returning to his room, Daniel felt dizzy and fell asleep on the bed.
Nia's mother pushed Nia into Daniel's room, twisting her arm and warning, "Don't ruin this for us, understand? Or I'll beat you!"
"Mom, he has someone he loves. Why do this?" Nia felt both helpless and heartbroken.
She couldn't believe her mother would go this far to latch onto a wealthy man.
Nia's mother sneered, "So what? They're not married yet. You need to seize this opportunity for our future."
"But he's already asleep." Nia added.
"That's even better. Just lie next to him. I put something in his drink; he won't wake up for a while. Be proactive, and tomorrow I'll pretend to find you and force him to take responsibility," Nia's mother said with a smile. "A rich man like this doesn't come around often. Don't be shy. Whoever you marry, you'll have to sleep with them eventually. Be proactive, and you'll have a lifetime of wealth. I'm so lucky to have found such a rich man."
Nia frowned, about to speak.
Her mother dropped her smile and lowered her voice, "Don't be ungrateful. If I weren't old and unattractive, it would be my chance. Don't waste this opportunity."
The door closed and locked from the outside.
