Chapter 285 If Not You, There Will Be Someone Else

His health had always been good.

It must be that he had been working too hard recently, dealing with too many frustrating things, not eating properly, and the dry winter weather.

That was why he had a nosebleed.

Raymond pulled out some tissues from the car and wiped the blood off his palm.

The blood on his palm made the already faint lines even more chaotic, just like his agitated mood.

He thought about the food he had bought to share with Margaret.

But as soon as he entered the house, he saw Margaret lying on the carpet, looking utterly devastated.

He was so angry with her that he forgot his purpose for coming, which was to see her and bring her food.

Raymond rolled down the car window, letting the cold wind blow in. The chill on his face gradually cooled his heated mind.

He took out a pack of cigarettes, shook one out, and skillfully put it in his mouth.

Then he lit it with a lighter and started smoking.

The cold wind made the cigarette in his fingers flicker, just like his tumultuous life.

After calming down, Raymond picked up his phone, found Margaret's number, and sent her a message: [The takeout bag on the coffee table has your favorite food. Eat it while it's hot.]

After sending the message, he worried that Margaret wouldn't eat properly, so he called Alvin. "Have Mary come to the Hughes Manor to take care of Margaret. She doesn't need to go back during the time Margaret is recovering from childbirth; she should stay with Margaret."

"Okay, Mr. Howard," Alvin replied.

Raymond hung up and drove away.

In the Hughes Manor, Margaret was still sitting on the carpet, hugging her knees, and her face was resting on her knees. Tears were streaming down her cheeks.

The sound of a text message notification came.

Margaret wiped her tears away with her slender fingers and picked up the phone from the floor.

She glanced at it; it was a message from Raymond.

Only then did she notice a takeout bag on the coffee table?

She had been too busy arguing with Raymond to notice when the takeout bag had appeared.

Margaret stood up, walked to the coffee table, picked up the takeout bag, and opened it.

She took out the packed takeout box, seeing food from her once-favorite restaurant.

The color, aroma, and taste were just as they had been years ago, unchanged, but her heart was no longer the same.

Margaret glanced at it and sneered coldly. Raymond had killed Marlon and thought a small favor would make her forget.

Margaret closed the takeout box, put it back in the bag, and with a loud clang, threw the bag into the trash can.

"Ms. Hughes." A familiar voice came.

Margaret, who was in a daze, turned her head at the sound.

She saw Mary, carrying a basket full of fruits and vegetables, walking towards her. Mary had gone to mourn Marlon and knew Margaret had been through a lot recently.

Mary looked at Margaret with sorrow, her lips pressed together, tears in her eyes. "Ms. Hughes, don't be too sad."

Margaret sneered.

Ever since Marlon's accident, people had been telling her not to be too sad.

But Margaret didn't want to talk about it and didn't want to worry Mary, so she smiled and asked, "Why are you here?"

She couldn't remember the last time she had seen Mary.

"Ms. Hughes, my family has a greenhouse, and we have a lot of fruits and vegetables. I brought some for you. And I wanted to check on you." Mary had intended to tell her that Alvin had sent her to take care of Margaret.

But she remembered Alvin's instructions not to mention that it was Raymond's idea, as Margaret was currently at odds with Raymond.

Finding another reason would be more acceptable to Margaret.

Margaret glanced at the fruits and vegetables in Mary's basket, seeing she was also carrying a live chicken, which clucked and its eyes darted around.

"This is a chicken we raised ourselves. It's great for the baby." Mary said with a smile.

Margaret's brow furrowed at the mention of the baby.

If Mary hadn't reminded her, she would have almost forgotten about the mutant baby in her belly.

Margaret didn't want to talk about the baby, but she didn't want to take it out on innocent people. Mary had always been good to her.

"Thank you." Margaret finally managed to say.

Mary continued, "Ms. Hughes, I'd like to stay with you for a while, to keep you company. Is that okay?"

"I want to be alone for a while." Margaret looked away and bit her lip.

Seeing that Margaret didn't want her company, Mary made up another reason: "Ms. Hughes, I don't mind telling you. My family used to be in the farming business, but my husband lost money and we owe debts. Our child is going to college and we urgently need tuition. My son is studying art, which costs a lot. So I want to continue serving you. Please give me a chance."

Margaret hesitated for a moment after hearing this, then looked up at Mary, thinking everyone had their struggles.

Seeing Margaret didn't say anything, Mary added, "Don't worry, Ms. Hughes. I'm very good at my job. If you want to be alone, I won't disturb you. I'll just cook for you and take care of you, keeping you company."

"Raymond sent you to spy on me, didn't he?" Margaret suddenly smirked.

Mary was stunned. "I..."

"You can stay. If it wasn't you, it would be someone else spying on me. Besides, you're a good person." Margaret said again.

Mary was so moved that her eyes turned red. "Thank you, Ms. Hughes, for giving me this job. Ms. Hughes, would you like to eat? I'll cook for you now."

"Cook whatever you want. Don't worry about me." Margaret said, then turned and went to her room, closing the door behind her.

Mary shook her head, then noticed the takeout bag in the trash can. She picked it up, opened it, and then put it back in the trash can.

After cooking the meal, Mary went to knock on Margaret's door. "Ms. Hughes, the meal is ready. Do you want to come out to eat, or should I bring it to you?"

Margaret, in her bedroom, holding a photo of her parents, didn't respond.

Mary, understanding, said, "Ms. Hughes, I've kept the food warm in the kitchen. Remember to come out and eat when you're hungry."

There was still no response.

Margaret held the photo frame of her parents, her nose tingling, and tears fell onto the photo.

"Margaret, I left you a letter in the safe in the study. Remember to read it."

"Margaret, I left you some money, and the gold and silver jewelry your dad bought for me. I haven't touched them. They're in the bottom layer of the wardrobe in our bedroom. The key is in the safe in your dad's study."

"The safe's password is your birthday."

Margaret suddenly realized she needed to find the letter Marlon had left for her.

She wanted to know what was written in that letter.

Margaret got up from the floor, opened the door, and went to Marlon's study.
