Chapter 114 Overestimating Oneself

The six o'clock alarm jolted Margaret awake the next morning. No rest for the weary—she had to get up early and grab some essentials from Hughes Manor for Raymond's villa.

When she opened her eyes, Raymond was already gone, his side of the bed cold. He must've been up for a while. She remembered dreaming about being snuggled in his arms, but the reality was way harsher.

Feeling crappy, she took a cab to Hughes Manor. The moving company she’d booked the night before was already there waiting.

By 7 AM, she had everything moved to Raymond's villa and organized. She hung her clothes next to his and locked the notebook he bought her in a drawer.

In her rush, a photo of a mute boy slipped out, unnoticed.

By 8:30, she was done tidying up. She washed up and headed downstairs for breakfast.

As she was enjoying her soup, her phone rang. It was Nancy, reminding her to take care of herself in the cold weather. Margaret, touched by Nancy's concern, listened and responded silently, moved to tears.

Finally, Nancy got to the point. "Margaret, the director told me the payment is due the day after tomorrow. Make sure to tell Raymond. Don't forget."

"So soon? Didn't they say it would be in half a month?" Margaret was a bit surprised.

Nancy explained, "The hospital needs payment ten days in advance to prevent patients from defaulting."

"Got it. I'll tell him later." Margaret sighed softly and hung up the phone.

She thought about last night when Raymond caught her taking birth control pills. He was probably still pissed, and she needed to smooth things over before bringing up the medical expenses.

Raymond loved the pizza from this one place, so Margaret packed some for him.

Even though he was financially free now, Raymond still preferred these cheap breakfasts because he had gone through tough times growing up.

She took a cab to the company, and the CEO's office area was still dark.

Only Raymond's office was brightly lit.

He was wearing an expensive, simple business suit, sitting in a black leather chair, working on his tasks.

Raymond was so focused that he didn't notice her standing in front of him.

"Mr. Howard, have you had breakfast?" Margaret asked awkwardly, smiling at him.

He didn't even glance at her.

Margaret was used to this and placed the breakfast on his desk. "I brought you breakfast."

He still ignored her, suspecting she had some ulterior motive.

Moreover, he was disgusted by her calling out "Little Mute" last night.

He had been so disturbed that he came to the office in the middle of the night and worked until now.

So he hadn't had time for breakfast.

"Mr. Howard, I was wrong last night."

"Really? Then tell me, what did you do wrong?" Raymond asked coldly, still flipping through documents and signing his name.

Margaret didn't think she had done anything wrong. But given her current situation, she had to lower her head. Getting the money was the most important thing.

So she lowered her head, saying, "I shouldn't have taken birth control pills without your permission. I'll stick to the contract terms from now on, follow your lead, and not go against you. When you give me tasks, it's a sign of your trust. I should be grateful, not annoying.

"Oh, and I ran into Daniel at the grocery store yesterday. He told me his sudden retirement had nothing to do with you. I misunderstood you before. He gave me a ride home because I had a lot of stuff, and he was just being nice. I paid him for the ride; it wasn't free."

Raymond finally looked up slowly, staring at her intently. "Who is the mute boy?"

"He's a boy I saved," Margaret answered.

"So, you're his savior? I didn't expect you to be so kind," Raymond said with a smile that didn't reach his eyes, his lips curling in a deep, unreadable way.

Sarah saved him, and Margaret saved the mute boy?

And because of that, she couldn't forget him?

Margaret was about to explain when Raymond's smile faded, and he sneered. "Stay away from other men until we get divorced!"

"I'll do as you say. Don't be mad. Eat your breakfast; it's bad for your stomach if it gets cold." Margaret changed the subject.

Raymond was indeed hungry, so he picked up the pizza.

Margaret watched his expression, and when she was sure he was in a good mood, she nervously asked, "Mr. Howard, the director is urging for the medical fees. Can you..."

Raymond's face changed slightly. So, her sudden compliance and apology were all because of Marlon's medical fees.

Thinking of this, Raymond threw the breakfast into the trash can.

"Margaret, did you think buying me breakfast would make me go soft on Marlon? You overestimate yourself!"

"No, didn't we sign a contract? I fulfilled my part last night!" Margaret was confused.

What did he mean? Was he going back on his word?

She didn't realize that her words had angered him. His face darkened visibly, and he pointed to the door impatiently. "Go clean your office building! Stop hovering in front of me!"

"You're such a tough guy!" Margaret was also angry.

She had kindly brought him breakfast, and not only did he not appreciate it, but he also wanted to back out of their agreement?

She had been played by him so many times!

Margaret was trembling with anger, feeling both wronged and helpless, tears streaming down her face. "I'll clean every floor I'm supposed to. But suddenly refusing to pay, what is that? Raymond, you're such a jerk! I quit!"

In her anger, Margaret grabbed the pen holder on the desk, ready to smash it on the floor.

"If you dare to break it, you bet I'll make sure Marlon dies?" Raymond's voice rose, shouting angrily.

So, she was only trying to please him and get close to him for money and the deal. And now she didn't even bother to pretend. Who gave her the courage to treat him like this?
