Chapter 65 This Grudge Won't Go Away

In Dorothy's eyes, Ashley was like the cheapest stock with the highest potential return.

Ashley was her only kid. After Ashley died, there was no one left to give her money, and she was stuck with Emily.

She had no one to lean on for the rest of her life and now had to help raise Emily.

Dorothy was fuming when she found out that Ashley lost her job because of Margaret.

Margaret cut off her cash flow!

Dorothy, boiling with rage, gritted her teeth and cursed, "Ashley ended up like this, and she still dares to show up at Ashley's funeral today! That bitch! I won't let her get away with this!"

Dorothy looked around, trying to find a knife, but couldn't.

Shaking with anger, unable to vent her fury, Dorothy stormed out of the Chapel of Rest.

Sarah, watching the drama, pretended to be worried and shouted, "Dorothy, don't do anything crazy."

Meanwhile, Margaret and Daniel were chatting when suddenly her arm was grabbed by someone hard.

She was pulled to the side.

Daniel reacted fast, pulling Margaret's arm away.

Dorothy's slap landed hard on Daniel's handsome face.

Margaret was shielded behind Daniel, and she saw Dorothy rushing over to hit her. "You bitch! Who let you come to Ashley's funeral? You're not welcome here, get out, get out!"

Margaret was baffled. "What did I do?" Did she piss off Dorothy?

"Look at your innocent face! You can fool others, but you can't fool me! You bribed Ashley, didn't you?" Dorothy glared at Margaret with such fury that she seemed ready to tear her apart.

Margaret said, "Yes."

Dorothy shouted, "You got her killed, do you know that? She lost her job because she took your money and got reported! What beef did she have with you to make you screw her over like this?"

Margaret's eyelid twitched. "She lost her job because she took money?"

Margaret really didn't know.

Dorothy blurted out, "Stop pretending! Weren't you the one who reported her? You're so cruel, not only did you get her fired, but you also got her killed!"

Margaret denied, "I didn't!"

"You killed Ashley! You're the only witness. Why wasn't it you who died instead of Ashley? It shows you set her up and got her killed! Bitch, you dare to come to the funeral, do you think we are dead? I'm going to beat you to death today, you bitch!" Dorothy rolled up her sleeves, ready to rush at Margaret.

Daniel quickly grabbed Dorothy's wrist. "What are you doing? Can't you let Ashley rest in peace at her funeral?"

Dorothy shouted at Daniel, spitting as she spoke, "Are you her husband? It's because of you two that Ashley died! Aren't you afraid of karma?"

Another slap landed on Daniel's other cheek.

Daniel's face instantly turned red, and he glared at Dorothy. "The police have closed the case, what are you making a fuss about? Saying Ms. Hughes is a murderer, do you have evidence? If you don't, stop causing trouble!"

Dorothy was scared, and it took her a while to speak, "You, you are all in this together, I'm going to call the police."

Daniel let go of her hand, took out his badge from his bag, and showed it to Dorothy. "I am the police, and I was involved in the investigation of Ashley's case from start to finish. She committed suicide due to depression. You, as her parent, bear the greatest responsibility for her ending up like this. Did you ever care about her? Did you ever truly understand and empathize with her?"

He added, "According to our investigation, your relationship with Ashley wasn't good, and she even cut ties with you. Am I right?"

Dorothy was at a loss for words. "I..."

Daniel said, "Like I mentioned, if you wanna overturn the case, bring some solid proof. We only deal with evidence. If you wanna stir up trouble, don't blame us for getting tough. And if you think my attitude sucks and wanna file a complaint, go ahead and do it at the police station."

Dorothy broke down, sitting on the ground, pounding the floor, wailing like a banshee, losing all dignity. "Ashley, you died so horribly; you were murdered; you can't rest in peace. Open your eyes and see how cocky these evildoers are. It's unbearable. I curse the person who harmed you, may they die a terrible death, not just them, but their whole family, may they all die!"

Sarah listened to this, swallowed hard, lowered her eyes guiltily, and felt a chill run down her spine.

Dorothy actually threw a curse, cursing Sarah.

If curses worked, we wouldn't need the law.

Sarah rolled her eyes and snorted, truly clueless.

Daniel looked at Margaret. "Ms. Hughes, since we're not welcome here, we should bounce."

"Okay." Margaret nodded and followed Daniel out of the funeral home.

Dorothy kept cursing them viciously behind.

Margaret frowned, but she felt the curses weren't aimed at her, as she hadn't done anything wrong.

Daniel didn't drive a cop car today; it was a black SUV.

The car wasn't fancy, just over ten grand.

Daniel opened the car door, and Margaret slid into the passenger seat.

As he buckled up, he asked her, "Where do you live? I'll drop you off."

Margaret looked at his swollen face and frowned. "Let's hit the hospital first; you need to get that swelling down."

Daniel paused while buckling up but didn't argue and drove straight to the hospital.

They went to the hospital where Ashley used to work.

Margaret paid Daniel's fees; she didn't want to owe him a favor, especially since he got slapped twice because of her today.

When she came back with the receipt, Daniel was sitting in the consultation room.

A nurse was using a cotton swab to reduce the swelling on Daniel's face.

They were chatting quietly, and the nurse was blushing, her ears turning red.

Margaret didn't want to interrupt, so she leaned against a nearby railing and waited.

She didn't expect this cop to be so chill.

Margaret stared at the tiled floor, and Dorothy's words echoed in her mind. She frowned. Could Ashley's resignation really be tied to her?

She had given money just to ask Ashley to take care of Nancy and give her some time to gather the medical expenses.

At this moment, Daniel went out and said, "What are you thinking? Let's go."

A pair of sneakers appeared in her view.

She looked up to see Daniel in a short-sleeved shirt, his muscles well-defined, his arms looking pretty attractive.

He was holding his jacket, looking relaxed and casual.

Looking at his face, the swelling had gone down.

Margaret sighed in relief. Luckily, the swelling had gone down; otherwise, she would have felt guilty.

Daniel said, "I just asked that nurse. Ashley did lose her job because she was reported for taking your money. And she was personally fired by the director."

Margaret pressed. "Who reported her?"

Daniel shook his head. "An anonymous tip. The hospital protected their privacy and didn't disclose it. Maybe Ashley pissed someone off, and they took the chance to get her fired."

Just then, Margaret's phone buzzed.

An anonymous text message: [Meet me at the coffee shop. I have a secret you wanna know. It's about your husband, Raymond.]

The coffee shop mentioned in the text was her favorite one.

The person who wanted to meet her knew Raymond and knew his secret? What was their deal with Raymond?
