Chapter 278 Please, Don't Go
Margaret hurriedly squatted down to pull Nancy up.
But when she touched Nancy's palm, it was chillingly cold.
"Mom!" Margaret saw Nancy's eyelids fluttering. She quickly checked Nancy's breath, which was already very weak.
Daniel and Alvin both stepped forward. Daniel was a step ahead of Alvin and picked up Nancy from the ground, quickly walking towards the car.
Alvin was responsible for driving, and Nancy lay on the flattened back seat.
Just as Daniel was about to get out of the car, Nancy's gaze fixed on him. "Mr. Taylor, I have a few words to say to you."
"Mr. Taylor, why don't you ride with us?" Margaret didn't want Nancy's wish to go unfulfilled.
Daniel nodded and got into the car, closing the door.
Alvin drove quickly on the mountain road.
"Alvin, please drive faster and get my mom to the nearest hospital," Margaret pleaded with pursed lips.
Alvin agreed.
Inside the car, Margaret kept holding Nancy's hand, but Nancy's palm grew colder and colder.
Nancy's face was as pale as a sheet, her lips a ghastly pale.
Nancy's gaze kept shifting between Margaret and Daniel.
"Mr. Taylor, what do you think of Margaret?" Nancy suddenly smiled at Daniel, who was sitting in front of her.
Daniel didn't expect this question. He glanced at Margaret, whose hand was being held by Nancy.
At this moment, Margaret was wearing a high-quality black coat.
Margaret looked much thinner compared to the last time he saw her, but her belly was slightly rounded.
Daniel's gaze at Margaret was complex and sympathetic, with a hint of heartache and inexplicable emotion.
But remembering that she was already Raymond's wife, he couldn't entertain inappropriate thoughts.
The emotions in his eyes quickly faded, and he regained his composure. "Mrs. Hughes, Ms. Hughes is a good person."
Margaret's face inexplicably flushed upon hearing this.
Could it be that she was right, that Daniel liked her?
Daniel continued, "We are very good friends."
Hearing that, Margaret breathed a sigh of relief.
Nancy smiled again and asked Daniel, "What if I entrust Margaret to you, how about that?"
Daniel was taken aback.
Before he could respond, Margaret interrupted Nancy, "Mom, you're talking nonsense again. Mr. Taylor and I are just friends. How can you make such a request?"
"Margaret, I'm talking to him. Don't interrupt," Nancy frowned. She thought Daniel was reliable and wanted to entrust Margaret to someone dependable so she could be at ease.
Nancy looked at Daniel again, "Mr. Taylor, what do you think?"
Alvin, who was driving, touched his nose, thinking Nancy was really confused.
Margaret was already married, how could she still want Margaret and Daniel to be together?
"Mrs. Hughes, Mr. Howard treats Mrs. Howard well. Mrs. Howard is married now; you can't say such things," Alvin spoke up for Raymond.
Nancy found him annoying and her face darkened. She was breathing heavily.
Daniel saw Nancy staring at him, as if waiting for his answer.
"Mrs. Hughes, Ms. Hughes is my friend. If she encounters difficulties, I won't stand by and do nothing, as long as she doesn't see me as an outsider," Daniel finally stated.
Hearing this, Nancy seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and showed a long-lost smile, "That's good."
The car arrived at the town hospital, and Daniel wanted to carry Nancy out of the car.
Alvin, who didn't like him, thinking he was Raymond's rival, pushed him aside and carried Nancy out himself.
The doctor examined Nancy and his expression grew more serious, "You need to get the patient to a city hospital immediately. Our facilities are limited and we can't save her. If you delay, the patient won't make it."
The doctor's words were like a bolt from the blue.
But Silverbrook Hospital was at least half an hour's drive from here. Could Nancy hold on for half an hour?
Nancy was carried back into the car.
Alvin drove at breakneck speed, trying to get Nancy to the hospital as quickly as possible.
Margaret sat in front of Nancy, watching her face grow paler and her hand, held in hers, grow colder; she felt heartbroken.
She remembered how Nancy used to live a life of luxury, envied by everyone as a wealthy lady.
But now, at some point, Nancy's eyes had developed fine lines, and her hair had strands of gray.
If it weren't for her falling in love with Raymond and insisting that Marlon persuade Nancy, Nancy wouldn't have aged so quickly, Marlon wouldn't have fallen from the balcony, and the Hughes Family wouldn't have fallen apart overnight.
Margaret now realized how terribly wrong she had been. She had been too willful!
Her willfulness had dragged down the Hughes Family, her parents!
Thinking of this, she felt heartache and helpless.
"Mom, hold on, okay? Don't do this, please." Margaret clutched Nancy's hand, tears streaming down her face as she cried and pleaded.
Nancy lay there, watching Margaret cry like this, and her own tears silently fell from the corners of her eyes.
"Mom, I really know I was wrong. You can scold me, you can hit me, I won't blame you. Don't go, Mom, Dad is gone, and you're the only family I have left!"
"If you go, what will I do? If you all go, I will truly be an orphan!"
"Mom, don't punish me like this. Find another way, okay? I don't want to be an orphan. I want a family. You said it, it doesn't matter if we don't have money. As long as the family is together, it's good, there's hope. I can take care of you, you're not a burden, you and Dad have never been a burden to me!"
Nancy's gaze became unfocused, and she wanted to speak.
But she couldn't say anything, she felt all her strength being drained.
"Mrs. Hughes, we're almost there, please hold on," Daniel also said with pursed lips.
Nancy looked at Daniel, then at the crying Margaret.
She couldn't speak anymore, even opening her mouth was difficult, so she struggled to lift her hand, wanting to wipe Margaret's tears and tell her not to cry. But she didn't even have the strength to lift her hand.
Margaret quickly grabbed her hand and placed her cold hand on her tear-streaked cheek.
Nancy struggled, bit by bit, to wipe her tears.
"Mom, promise me you won't go, hold on! Dad just died yesterday, you can't die today!" Margaret sobbed, tears continuously falling.
