Chapter 325 It Was All Because of Him
"Mutated, that's what it is. Mrs. Howard's baby is a monster. It's not like a normal baby."
"At the moment, this baby has three hands, two faces, and four legs."
Raymond was stunned upon hearing this.
"Why did Mrs. Howard's baby mutate?" Alvin asked.
Rufus replied, "On one hand, Mrs. Howard is in the late stages of cancer and shouldn't have been able to get pregnant. On the other hand, she took a lot of medication that was supposed to be good for the baby, but some of those drugs conflicted with cancer treatments. For cancer patients, these drugs can be fatal or accelerate the spread of cancer cells. In other words, Mrs. Howard's condition is due to taking the wrong medication while being pregnant."
Raymond suddenly felt weak and took a step back.
Alvin quickly supported him, "Mr. Howard."
"Let's hear your treatment plans," Raymond forced himself to stay calm and coldly glanced at the dozens of doctors.
At Raymond's words, they all looked at each other, not daring to speak.
"Mr. Howard is asking you a question. Why aren't you answering?" Alvin pressed.
Seeing no one else speak, Rufus had to muster the courage to say, "Mr. Howard, there is no treatment plan."
"No treatment plan? Then why am I paying you?" Raymond's anger flared up instantly, "Isn't your job to treat and save lives? Money is not an issue. As long as you cure her, I will reward you handsomely."
Rufus sighed, "Mr. Howard, it's not about the money! Mrs. Howard's condition has progressed to this point! Her body can't even handle surgery! If we operate, there's a high chance she won't survive the procedure and will die on the table!"
"So according to you, I should just take her home and wait for her to die?" Raymond was furious.
Rufus remained silent.
Another doctor spoke up, "Mr. Howard, the best treatment for Mrs. Howard now is to use regular medication to stabilize her condition and painkillers to relieve her pain. She shouldn't make any big movements. Enjoying the present and living out her final days is the best approach."
Raymond scoffed. How was that any different from waiting to die?
He had thought that bringing in doctors from all over Silverbrook for a consultation would bring good news. But it was the same result.
An indescribable frustration spread in Raymond's heart, making him feel like his heart was about to explode.
"Get out! All of you, get out! Useless bunch of trash!" Raymond growled.
After everyone left, the empty hallway was left with only Raymond and Alvin.
Seeing Raymond's face change several times, Alvin couldn't help but try to comfort him, "Mr. Howard, don't be too sad."
"Why am I sad? Margaret is still alive." Raymond turned and glared at Alvin.
Alvin realized he had misspoken, "That's not what I meant. Mr. Howard, please don't be angry."
"You get out too!" Raymond snapped.
Alvin knew that Raymond was having a hard time accepting the fact that Margaret was in the late stages of liver cancer. He wisely turned and left to get Raymond some dinner.
After Alvin left, Raymond's body slowly slid down the cold wall.
He ended up half-squatting on the ground.
Raymond was still wearing the black coat he had on when Margaret was kidnapped.
He was a clean freak and never wore the same clothes for two days in a row.
The coat had long since dried, but Raymond still felt a bone-chilling cold.
Raymond suddenly remembered the medication he had brought for Margaret, which was supposed to be good for the baby.
Margaret had carefully read the instructions on the back of the medicine pack and asked him many times, "Raymond, do you really want me to take these pills?"
"Raymond, can I not take the medication?"
"If I take the medication, will you keep your promise to help the Hughes Family and take care of my parents?"
"Raymond, I know your wish, and you will achieve it."
"Raymond, if one day you find out that you've lost me forever, will you cry? If one day I really die, will you attend my funeral?"
Raymond's ears echoed with Rufus's words, "Mr. Howard, Mrs. Howard's body can't handle pregnancy. Her fetus has mutated into a monster. Her condition has worsened because of the wrong medication."
"Mrs. Howard has late-stage liver cancer. Living out her final days peacefully is the best approach."
Raymond's throat felt tight, and the sourness in his eyes was unbearable.
Raymond took out a cigarette and put it in his mouth.
His fingers, holding the lighter, trembled slightly, but he couldn't light the cigarette.
So it was because of him. Margaret had coughed up blood several times in front of him!
She had even brought a thick stack of medical reports to show him. But after he took her for a check-up, the results were normal. He had never believed her!
Besides, Daniel had warned him twice.
The first time was outside a baby store when Daniel wanted to talk to him alone. He sent Margaret to wait in the car.
Daniel told him that Margaret had cancer and asked him to treat her well.
But he had confirmed with Hubert that Margaret was fine.
The second time was a few days ago when Daniel came to the Hughes Group and asked him to persuade Margaret to get treatment, or he would regret it.
At the time, he thought Daniel and Margaret were trying to trick him and run away together.
So he didn't take it seriously and scoffed at it. But Daniel was telling the truth. Margaret was telling the truth too!
She really had cancer, a terminal illness that couldn't be treated!
The cigarette was finally lit. Raymond took a drag, one puff after another.
Although the cigarette was his favorite brand, it tasted bitter and harsh.
His heart felt like it was stuffed with stone, and his throat felt like it was blocked with iron.
He couldn't swallow, and he couldn't spit it out.
This time, Margaret really wouldn't live for much longer, just as he had wished.
Maybe the cigarette was too harsh, Raymond's eyes turned red, and then a tear rolled down from his eye.
He wiped away the tear with his long fingers.
He wouldn't let Margaret die; there had to be a way.
No matter how difficult the road, he had walked it, and Margaret could too. He would stay with her through the treatment. If these doctors couldn't do it, he would find others.
"Mr. Howard, Mrs. Howard is awake," A nurse carrying a tray of medications approached Raymond and said.
Raymond looked up and saw the nurse's masked face.
He quickly wiped away his tears, extinguished the cigarette, and threw it in the trash.
"You are so good to your wife. You've stayed with her for days since she was admitted. Unlike some female patients, whose husbands we never see from admission to discharge."
