Chapter 399: I Am Your Best Friend

Daniel smirked. "Raymond asked you to give this to me?"

"Mr. Raymond Howard and Mrs. Margaret Howard are about to get married, and this gift is for every employee of The Hughes Group. Mr. Taylor, this one's yours." The secretary shoved the gift into Daniel's hand and immediately turned to leave.

Daniel felt the gift box in his hand was as heavy as a thousand pounds. The girl he liked was about to marry her knight in shining armor.

It was time for him to bow out gracefully.

The elevator doors opened, and Daniel stepped inside.

Margaret arrived just in time for lunch. As she pushed open the door, Hubert, who was being scolded by Raymond, squinted at her. "Mrs. Howard, you look great, just like your old self."

"And you are—?" Margaret frowned.

Hubert's eyes narrowed. He had heard from The Hughes Group employees that Margaret had lost her memory. It seemed to be true.

No wonder she and Raymond were back to being so close.

"I'm Hubert. Your father was hospitalized at the hospital I worked at."

"My father was hospitalized?" Margaret looked at him in surprise, then turned to Raymond.

Raymond rubbed his nose and shot Hubert an annoyed glance. "This doesn't concern you anymore. You can go."

Hubert nodded and left. The female secretary in charge of distributing gifts also handed Hubert one.

As he walked out of The Hughes Group, Hubert tossed the gift into a trash can, lit a cigarette, and called Sarah. "Margaret not only had a successful liver transplant but also lost her memory. She's going to try on wedding dresses with Raymond this afternoon. Find a way to bump into them."

"That bitch, even God is helping her," Sarah fumed over the phone.

Hubert bit down on his cigarette. "Once she gets her memory back, Raymond's dream will be over."

"Do you have a plan?"

"Get her to come to me. I have a way to trigger her memory. I'm curious to see Raymond's reaction when he finds out his sweet little wife has regained her memory the night before the wedding."

After lunch, Raymond drove Margaret to the bridal shop to pick out a wedding dress.

The white mermaid gown looked stunning on Margaret, accentuating her figure and elegance. She tried on several dresses based on the manager's suggestions.

She loved every single one.

"If you like them, wear them all on the day," Raymond said nonchalantly, smoking a cigarette.

Margaret pursed her lips. "Isn't that a bit too much?"

"As long as you're happy, don't worry about what others think." Raymond flicked the ash from his cigarette.

Just then, Sarah entered the bridal shop. Seeing Margaret, she ran over excitedly and hugged her. "Margaret, what a coincidence! I didn't expect to see you here."

Margaret was overwhelmed by the strong perfume and pushed her away. "Who are you?"

Sarah was shocked. "You don't recognize me? I'm Sarah, your best friend."

"I heard you had cancer. I was so worried about you. I couldn't eat or sleep well. Seeing you recover makes me so happy. Margaret, I even went to church to pray for you."

Sarah clung to Margaret's arm. Margaret felt uneasy; she had no memory of this woman but didn't like her supposed best friend.

Margaret looked suspiciously at Raymond on the sofa. "Is she really my best friend?"

Sarah also looked over and smiled warmly at Raymond. "Raymond, long time no see."

Raymond's fingers holding the cigarette stiffened. Margaret and Sarah had once been very close, but they had a falling out. They were best friends, but that was in the past.

Considering Margaret was now an orphan with no friends, and Sarah had once helped him, Raymond thought having more friends around might make her happier.

"Yeah, you two used to be really tight," Raymond said gently.

With that assurance, Margaret lowered her guard, and Sarah breathed a sigh of relief.

"What brings you here?" Raymond asked Sarah.

Sarah lied. "I have a boyfriend, and things are going well. We might get married, so I came to check out dresses."

Hearing she was getting married, Raymond also relaxed, knowing he couldn't keep his promise to marry her.

"Bring your boyfriend over sometime. We'll help you check him out."

"Sure," Sarah said gratefully.

Margaret watched their conversation, feeling something was off.

"Margaret, this dress would look great on you," Sarah said, pointing to the most expensive burgundy gown.

Margaret coldly replied, "It's too flashy for me."

When Raymond came out in a black suit, the staff kept complimenting how well they matched. Margaret noticed Sarah's fingers clenching tightly.

When they went to buy wedding rings, Sarah tagged along, much to Margaret's annoyance.

Margaret clung to Raymond's arm, while Sarah followed like a third wheel, seething with anger. This bitch, even with amnesia, was so shameless.

While choosing rings, Sarah picked out a $500,000 ring for Margaret. The manager, recognizing Raymond's distinguished demeanor, brought out the store's treasure, a $5 million diamond ring.

Sarah's eyes lit up at the sight of the ring. It was huge, dazzling, and expensive, perfect for showing off.

But the manager placed it on Margaret's finger, praising how it suited her. Margaret noticed Sarah's gaze fixed on the ring, not moving.

"I'll take this one," Margaret said, looking at the ring on her finger.

Raymond smiled. "Wrap it up."

Sarah was stunned, her voice trembling. "Raymond, don't you think this ring is too expensive? Five million dollars could be used for so many other things."

Realizing her words were too harsh, Sarah quickly softened her tone. "Margaret, I didn't mean it like that. I just think money should be spent wisely. This kind of extravagance isn't your style. You've always been frugal."

"Money should be spent wisely, but I have plenty," Raymond interrupted coldly. "Do you want to wear it or have it wrapped up?" he asked Margaret.

To spite Sarah, Margaret said, "I like it, so I'll keep it on. Actually, I should take it off. It would be a shame if I lost it."

"If you lose it, I'll buy another. I can afford ten of these."

After paying, Raymond wrapped his arm around Margaret's waist as they left the jewelry store. Sarah clenched her fists in anger. Margaret, once you regain your memory, we'll see if you can still smile.

The three of them went for coffee. Sarah, holding her phone, played the victim. "Margaret, let's add each other as friends. That way, we can meet up for afternoon tea."
