Chapter 553 If You Don't Like Her, Don't Provoke Her
After a while, Lyric called her friend.
"Lyric, what's going on?" Her friend's worried voice crackled through the phone.
Lyric wiped away her tears, her throat dry and scratchy.
She wanted to speak but feared her voice would betray her emotions and worry her friend even more.
"I want to leave Silverbrook and go back to my parents. Let's grab dinner before you go."
Her friend quickly asked, "Did something happen? Did Daniel do something to you?"
"No, it's just that staying in Silverbrook feels like a waste of time."
"You're giving up on Daniel? You've liked him for so many years."
"I don't like him anymore."
"Lyric, make sure you're certain about this. Whatever you decide, I'll support you. If you don't want to talk about it, I won't ask."
After hanging up the phone, Lyric didn't sleep at all that night. She found a resignation letter template online, printed it out, and signed her name.
The next morning, she placed the resignation letter on the CEO's desk. Daniel wasn't there.
She then went to HR to submit her resignation. The HR manager looked confused. "Ms. Vaughn, does Mr. Taylor know about your resignation?"
"He doesn't know yet."
"Well, he needs to approve it. Without his approval, we can't process your resignation. Plus, you need to give three months' notice and complete the handover."
"I'll write up the handover documents today. Whether he approves it or not, I'm leaving."
"You might not get your salary if you do it this way."
"I don't care."
She left the HR office, unfazed. That money couldn't threaten her.
She had to leave this place of heartbreak today.
As she walked out of the office, she heard the HR manager urgently calling Daniel. "Mr. Taylor, Ms. Vaughn suddenly submitted her resignation. You need to handle this."
Daniel was leisurely having breakfast at home when he got the call. Annoyed, he called Della.
She didn't answer.
He couldn't believe she was quitting just because he didn't want to date her. A girl from a modest background, acting so impulsively?
With no other option, he texted Walter, asking him to keep Della from leaving. After all, Daniel saw potential in her and thought she could become a valuable asset.
Walter received the message and rushed to the CEO's office, leaving his breakfast unfinished.
He found Della packing her things into a box. She wasn't surprised to see him. "Walter, thanks for all your help. The handover documents are on the desktop. See you around."
"Ms. Vaughn, why are you resigning so suddenly? Is something wrong?" Walter asked, puzzled.
Lyric's hands paused for a moment before she continued packing. "Everything's fine."
"If you're unhappy with your salary, you can discuss it. Mr. Taylor might agree to your terms."
"You're overthinking it. I don't need money."
"I think you do. You just graduated and got a job at The Taylor Group. It's a great opportunity. Don't be so impulsive."
"Walter, my resignation has nothing to do with money. I want to go back home, meet someone, and get married. Is that so wrong?"
"Ms. Vaughn, you're so young. Shouldn't you focus on your career first? Marriage isn't something to rush into." Walter was stunned by her words, as he regarded Della as a sister. He wanted to say more, "Having money is the real confidence."
Lyric looked at him, feeling that they were speaking different languages.
As the only daughter of a wealthy family, she didn't need money. Did he even know what he was talking about?
Without Daniel, staying here was pointless.
"You're right. I'm leaving." Lyric said lightly, carrying her box as she walked out of the office.
Walter panicked and followed her. "Ms. Vaughn, why don't you wait for Mr. Taylor to arrive? He's on his way."
"Whether he comes or not, I'm leaving today." She pressed the elevator button, her voice cold.
"What did he do to you?"
"You should ask him."
The elevator doors opened.
Lyric stepped in. Walter wanted to say more, but the doors closed.
Walking down the street, she held her box in one hand and her phone in the other, ignoring Daniel's missed calls and messages. She called her friend. "Let's have dinner tonight."
At the same restaurant.
Her friend looked at her with concern. "Are you really leaving? Is it worth it for just one guy? Can't you stay?"
"I want a fresh start somewhere else. My parents miss me. I want to go back. I'm done with this nonsense." Lyric smiled bitterly. "Looking back, it was all foolish. If someone doesn't like you, no matter how hard you try, it's pointless. I could spend that time finding someone who loves me. Why waste more time and energy because of sunk costs?"
"Lyric..."
"After the first time we slept together and he was so cold to me, I should have realized. Instead, I kept hoping he had his reasons. Men aren't that complicated. If they don't like you, they just don't." Lyric raised her glass to toast her friend.
Her friend clinked glasses with her, looking at her with sympathy. "Daniel isn't worth your time. You made it clear how you felt, and he still acted that way. If I were you, I wouldn't stay either. There are plenty of good men out there. Why waste time on him?"
"You're right. I'm leaving Silverbrook tomorrow."
"Not staying a few more days?"
"No."
"Are you going to meet the guy your parents picked for you?"
"Probably. Since they chose him, I should at least meet him. It'll put their minds at ease."
After a few drinks, her friend drove her home.
As she got out of the car, she saw Daniel, dressed in a suit, waiting at her door.
"I called you. Why didn't you answer? I texted you too. What are you trying to do?" Daniel spoke first.
Before Lyric could respond, her friend, supporting her, spoke up. "You're Daniel, right?"
"Yes," he replied in a deep voice.
Lyric's friend glared at him, scrutinizing him with disdain. "You're not that impressive. You seem pretty full of yourself. Do you enjoy playing with her feelings? Let me tell you, if you don't like her, don't mess with her. She's not someone you can just push around. If she likes you, that's your good fortune. Do you understand? The CEO of The Taylor Group has such a small mind? No wonder you can't compare to Raymond!"
