Chapter 39 Life Countdown

However, it turned out there was no call or message.

She checked her WhatsApp and then remembered that Raymond had blocked her.

Her phone buzzed with a notification, and she opened it.

[The National Weather Service had put out a winter weather advisory.]

The roads were icy, and Eldoria was a no-go zone 'cause of avalanche risks.

They said this snowstorm might be the biggest disaster in the last ten years.

Margaret wanted to tell Ashley to stay away from Eldoria 'cause it was dangerous.

Celebrating a birthday somewhere else was cool, but she didn't have Ashley's number or any way to contact her; they were total strangers.

Margaret figured Ashley probably saw the warning and wouldn't go out.

She finished her meal and headed back to her five-star hotel.

Margaret was picky about where she stayed and had booked the priciest presidential suite.

She pulled a bright red diary out of her backpack.

She thought for a sec and remembered Raymond had given her this diary a year ago.

Back then, Marlon was still healthy.

They were like newlyweds, all lovey-dovey, taking walks after dinner. They passed a stationery store, and she spotted this diary.

Raymond teased her for liking a cheap notebook.

Other girls liked luxury stuff and pricey bags.

Margaret said she didn't need luxury goods or expensive bags.

Raymond was always busy with The Hughes Group, so she could fill this diary with her thoughts of him.

Maybe she could even write a book for him and become a bestselling author.

Raymond bought the notebook for her, but later she couldn't find it.

Today, she actually found it in her backpack, no clue how it got there.

Margaret took out a fountain pen, grabbed the notebook, pulled out a chair, sat down, and placed the notebook on the black desk.

She took off the pen cap, opened the notebook, and wrote a line.

[Life countdown: 23 days. Raymond, today I finally get where your misunderstanding of me comes from. Never thought the first time I'd meet your parents would be like this. The cops told me your parents died from a fire cause by old electrical wiring. Today, I really understand how tough it's been for you all these years. Your parents will bless you from heaven, keeping you safe and sound, living a long life. Even though you want me dead, I want you to live well.]

She closed the notebook and put down the pen.

Margaret sipped some tea and saw it was snowing heavily outside.

Apart from the dim streetlights and the occasional speeding car, there wasn't a single person on the road.

Ashley probably wouldn't go to Eldoria, right?

After a bath, Margaret lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.

"Mrs. Hughes, at 9 PM, it's my birthday, and I'll be setting off fireworks in Eldoria!"

"Mrs. Hughes, you must come!"

"Mrs. Hughes, thanks for booking the hotel for me; I really like it."

Ashley's voice echoed in her mind.

With the heavy snow outside, if an avalanche really happened in Eldoria, it could be deadly.

Margaret got out of bed, put on her down jacket, a woolen hat, and a scarf, grabbed her phone and room key, and went out.

She first went to a cake shop, bought a cake, paid extra for rush service, and then walked towards Eldoria with the beautifully packaged cake box.

The ground was already icy, making walking super tough.

What Margaret didn't know was that she was walking step by step towards her doom, and Ashley had already set a trap, waiting to hit her with a second-hand junk car as soon as she arrived.
