Chapter 29

The air was creepy quiet, and the vibe was heavy as hell.

Raymond wiped down the cup on the table and poured himself some water.

Alvin, clutching his phone, strolled in from the balcony, shut the glass door, and walked up to Raymond. He whispered, "Mr. Howard, we found Mrs. Howard!"

Raymond didn't even blink.

Alvin spilled all the tea, "Just like we thought, Mrs. Howard's headed to your hometown. She's on a flight to Ironwood Lane and will touch down early in the morning."

Raymond's mind replayed Margaret's words from earlier. "I will definitely get to the bottom of your parents' death and give you an explanation! But I believe my dad is innocent; there must be some misunderstanding!"

A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes. So she wasn't bailing, she was actually digging into it.

He thought Margaret was just talking big, but she actually went for it.

Alvin asked, "Mr. Howard, Ironwood Lane is super remote and barely anyone lives there. Wouldn't it be risky for Mrs. Howard to go alone? Should we send someone..."

Raymond's icy stare cut him off.

He'd messed up.

But Margaret really might be in danger.

Raymond sneered, "You really got a thing for her?"

Alvin freaked out, his face pale, and he quickly shook his head. "No way."

Raymond kept grinning. "Then why you so worried about her?"

Sweat dripped from Alvin's forehead as he stammered, "Mr. Howard, I think you care about Mrs. Howard."

Even though Raymond talked tough, he never went too far. When Margaret knelt outside The Hughes Group building and got mobbed by the media, Raymond had him call the cops anonymously.

All those media outlets went under.

Raymond also had him dig into the people behind those media outlets, including the hit-and-run driver who hit Marlon.

Ashley, who bullied Margaret, got coffee thrown at her by Raymond and was blacklisted in the nurse fields.

If that wasn't caring, what was?

He didn't want Raymond to regret it if he lost Margaret.

Raymond's eyes got colder, and his lips twisted into a cold smirk. "You've been with me for years, and now you think you can read my mind?"

Alvin lowered his head, too scared to speak.

From what he knew about Raymond, this was the calm before the storm.

"Get outta here, you eyesore!" Raymond snapped.

Alvin quickly nodded and said yes. As he reached the door, he stopped and glanced at Raymond's lonely figure on the sofa. "Mr. Howard, should we send someone to protect Mrs. Howard?"

Raymond hadn't been clear, and he didn't know what to do. He had to ask.

As soon as he finished, Raymond's cigarette, glowing between his fingers, was suddenly crushed into the ashtray.

The cigarette snapped, and the tiny red embers went out instantly.

"You've been with me for years; handle this small stuff yourself." Raymond's tone was flat, indifferent, and annoyed.

Alvin got the message and nodded. "Got it."

Alvin left The Hughes Manor, and snowflakes started falling again.

They landed on Alvin's shoulders.

He'd guessed wrong; he thought Raymond cared about Margaret.

He was sure Raymond would send someone to secretly protect Margaret.

But now it seemed like Raymond didn't give a damn.

When Alvin was with Raymond, Margaret had been kind to him, and she introduced him to his current wife.

But Raymond's orders were hard to ignore.

He looked at the dark, heavy night sky, snowflakes blurring his vision, and murmured, "Mrs. Howard, you gotta come back safe."

For some reason, he had a bad feeling that Margaret would be in danger and that this trip wouldn't go smoothly.

Then he thought, 'Mrs. Howard is kind and good to everyone, never making enemies. Who'd wanna hurt her? I'm just being paranoid.'

The plane landed at Ironwood Lane Airport right on time at midnight.

Margaret, with a backpack, walked out of the terminal. She always felt like someone was watching her and following her. She looked around as she walked slowly, and suddenly, someone smacked her shoulder hard.

Was the person following her finally making a move?

Margaret looked down and saw the shadow of a woman. Her body shook, and then she turned around.
