Chapter 549 Secret Crush

Lyric picked up her phone, glanced at the caller ID, and answered, "Walter."

"Hey, Ms. Vaughn, you still up?"

"Yeah, I am."

"Are you busy?"

"Walter, if you have something to say, just say it." She held the phone and walked to a quieter spot.

Walter's voice came through the phone, "Ms. Vaughn, could you come in for some overtime right now?"

"It's almost eleven," she frowned.

He started pleading, "I know it's late, but I just got the notice. A project got moved up, so we need to rush it. I'll talk to Mr. Taylor about getting you a raise. How does that sound?"

"You don't need to come to the office. It's not safe for a woman to be out this late. Just go to Mr. Taylor's house."

"You mean Daniel will be working with me?"

"That's one way to look at it."

Lyric knew Walter was just a messenger for Daniel and didn't have much say in the matter.

Working with Daniel wasn't a bad deal.

She agreed and hung up the phone.

As she turned around with a smile, Gerald looked at her, teasing, "What's got you so happy?"

"I realized you might be useful after all."

"I'm useful in many ways, you know."

"Alright, enough. I'll see you out. I need to head to Daniel's for some overtime."

"Your crush Daniel is really shameless, making you work this late," Gerald said as he followed her downstairs.

She watched him drive away.

Then she got a call from a friend asking how things were going.

"Daniel wants me to go to his place to work late into the night."

"Lyric, that's a good sign. It means he's interested and can't sit still," her friend said as Lyric walked towards Daniel's house, the cool breeze brushing against her.

Daniel's house had walls covered in large roses, their scent wafting in the wind.

Moonlight bathed the rose petals, giving them a soft, ethereal glow.

A grown man who liked roses...

Her friend added, "Lyric, remember what I said. Stay calm. Don't just sleep with him without thinking. Remember how he treated you last time! Learn from it!"

She hung up the phone.

Lyric saw Walter standing at the door, yawning in his suit, clearly dragged out of bed for this.

"Walter," she greeted him with a nod.

He nodded back and led her into The Taylor Villa.

She noticed The Taylor Villa was only a third the size of her own home.

The decor and style were luxurious for most people, but to her, it seemed a bit simple.

They walked up a spiral staircase, and Walter led her to a room at the end of the hallway.

He gently knocked on the door.

After getting permission to enter, he opened the door.

She followed him into a large study.

The main light was off.

Only a small night lamp on the desk was lit, casting a warm, orange glow.

"Mr. Taylor, Ms. Vaughn is here," Walter said, stepping aside.

Daniel sat lazily in a chair.

He raised his hand, and Walter left the room, closing the door behind him.

Daniel looked directly at Lyric.

He was still in his work clothes, indicating he hadn't had time to change.

His eyebrows raised slightly.

Lyric was also observing him, noting his loose, sexy emerald green robe. Leaning back in his chair, his fingers tapped the desk occasionally.

The robe revealed a patch of skin.

He had a good physique.

His eyes were deep and unreadable.

A high nose bridge.

Thin, pale pink lips pressed into a straight line.

When Lyric saw him like this, her mind flashed back to their first night together.

He had been on top of her, his breath hot against her neck.

Holding her tightly, he had said, "I like you. Please don't reject me."

Thinking about it made Lyric's ears burn.

Was he using overtime as an excuse to flirt with her?

She thought, 'My friend is right, Lyric, don't make the same mistake twice. I wouldn't let him look down on me again!'

Daniel was looking through documents on the desk, talking about work. He said a lot, but she didn't respond.

He looked up to see her staring at him.

She was daydreaming!

What was she thinking about?

Gerald, that playboy?

Daniel's expression changed slightly, his eyes narrowing. "I'm talking about work, and you're spacing out? You think I invited you here for coffee?"

His tone was harsh.

She felt a bit hurt and mocked him, "Mr. Taylor, it's after hours. It's already nice of me to come for overtime, okay? Speak nicely. I'm your employee, not your slave. And you say I'm spacing out. You're working late at night in a robe. I suspect you have ulterior motives."

"Ulterior motives? Have you watched too many soap operas and lost your mind? Or did the wind blow your brain off course tonight?" Daniel sneered, lighting a cigarette. "You think I'm like Gerald? You're Gerald's type, but not mine."

That line again.

He always reminded her she wasn't his type.

Lyric had been happy to work with him, but now she felt awful.

She retorted, "Don't worry, you're not my type either. I don't like older men."

"Good. Can we work now?" His face grew colder.

She was good at getting under his skin.

He assigned her a mountain of documents to organize.

Looking at the pile, she said, "This will take all night."

"Come back tomorrow afternoon. After tonight, you can sleep in."

Lyric started working on the files, occasionally glancing at him. He was focused on his work, a cigarette hanging from his lips.

A man working seriously was attractive.

Too bad he was a bad guy.

She got sleepy as she worked.

Half an hour later, Daniel finished some documents and his coffee. He called out, "Make me another cup of coffee."

He called several times, but got no response.

He thought she was still sulking. He couldn't understand how a girl from an ordinary background dared to challenge him repeatedly.

Looking up, he saw her asleep on the documents, her head resting on her slender arm, her lips occasionally moving.

Daniel got up, made himself a cup of coffee, and then draped his jacket over her. The temperature dropped significantly at midnight. He didn't want her to catch a cold. Hesitating, he carried her to the guest room and laid her on the bed.
