Chapter 71 Did Someone in Your Family Die?

The phone kept blowing up, but nobody was picking up.

Though tt was already 11 PM, there should be a cop on duty.

She called twice before someone finally answered. The voice on the other end was a dude’s, kinda familiar. "Police station, what’s up?"

Margaret said, "I need to report something..."

Margaret hung up and dialed the hospital.

By the time the ambulance rolled up, Margaret had already passed out from the pain, sprawled on the floor.

The medics quickly got Margaret on a stretcher and loaded her into the ambulance.

At the Martinez family Mansion, Sarah was out cold when the servant knocked on her door. "Ms. Martinez, wake up; something went wrong!"

Sarah groggily got out of bed and opened the door, smacking the servant. "Didn't I tell you not to bug me when I'm sleeping? Why are you knocking? What the hell happened? What's the rush?"

The servant covered her face, her cheeks turning red. Tears started to fall.

Sarah crossed her arms, glaring at the servant. "Stop crying! What happened? Spill it."

The servant pointed downstairs. "Ms. Martinez, there are cops here to see you."

Sarah's eyelid twitched. "Why would the cops show up in the middle of the night?"

Could it be that Ashley's mess got found out? No way, she covered her tracks too well.

Sarah's face changed.

The servant's expression shifted slightly, her body trembling. "I don't dare to say, Ms. Martinez, you should go down and ask yourself."

If she didn't dare to say, it must be serious.

Sarah's legs went weak, losing her earlier attitude. She swallowed hard, gripping the wooden railing, feeling dizzy as she went downstairs.

A cop in uniform was chilling on the sofa, with another one standing beside him.

When Sarah came downstairs, the cop on the sofa looked up, and her eyelid twitched instantly. "It's you?"

Sarah thought, 'He's the one who showed up at the funeral. He was chatting it up with Margaret. Why is he here?'

Daniel stood up from the sofa, looking all serious. "Ms. Martinez, please come with us."

Margaret remembered what Daniel had said at the funeral; he was also handling Ashley's case.

The case was closed, so why was he here? Did he really find something?

Sarah tried to keep her cool. "What did I do? Are you gonna arrest me? You can't just arrest people randomly."

Daniel walked up to Sarah, looking at her, and suddenly smiled. "Ms. Martinez, we just met at the funeral today, and now we meet again tonight."

Sarah sneered, "Officer, I don't know you well."

Daniel pulled out screenshots of photos and messages from his phone and showed them to Sarah. "Someone reported you for prostitution."

Sarah's face changed instantly when she saw the messages and photos. How did the photos she sent to Margaret end up with the cops?

Margaret, that bitch!

Daniel smiled slightly, asking officially, "Ms. Martinez, can we go now?"

Sarah gritted her teeth. As long as it wasn't about Ashley's case, it was fine.

She looked at the servant and instructed, "Don't tell Mr. Howard about tonight, got it?"

Raymond would definitely flip out if he found out.

The servant replied, "Got it, Ms. Martinez."

Sarah followed the cops out of the mansion and got into the police car.

At the station, after giving her statement, Sarah asked the officer, "Daniel, I've explained everything. This is just a misunderstanding. Can I go now?"

Daniel said, "Until we confirm whether you were involved in prostitution, you need to stay here."

Daniel snapped his notebook shut, gave the other officers a look, and said, "Keep an eye on her; don't let her pull any stunts. I'm clocking out."

"Got it, Daniel."

"Don't worry, she ain't going anywhere."

Daniel patted a few of his colleagues on the shoulder, then ditched his uniform and walked out the glass door.

Sarah, still trying to weasel her way out, smiled at the officers. "I was just messing with Margaret. No matter how deep you dig, I'm clean. How about you let me go, and I'll make it worth your while? Name your price."

One of the officers looked at her like she had two heads, shaking his head. "What? Are you trying to bribe us?"

Sarah tried to backpedal, but it was useless. "No, that's not what I meant. I'm really innocent."

Another officer, stone-faced, said, "Then sit tight. We won't wrong an innocent person, but we also won't let a guilty one slip."

When Margaret woke up, it was already the next day.

She opened her eyes and found herself in a hospital bed.

The doctor walked in; it was the same guy who had diagnosed her cancer before. He sighed, looking at her with a complicated expression. "Ms. Hughes, you were in real danger last night. Luckily, you called the ambulance in time. If we had arrived a bit later, you wouldn't be here."

Margaret got out of bed, staring at her toes, not saying a word.

So she had already been close to death once.

The doctor asked, "Does your family know about your condition?"

Margaret stayed silent.

The doctor said, "Are you not planning to tell them? Ms. Hughes, your cancer has spread to two-thirds of your liver."

So, she was inching closer to death.

But she still had so much to do. Margaret looked up at the doctor. "It's okay, everyone dies. Doctor, please prescribe me more painkillers. Or any medication that can extend my life, no matter the cost."

"There's no way to extend it. Now, you could die anytime. What you need to do is stay in good spirits and not scare yourself." The doctor sighed, shaking his head in regret.

At that moment, Margaret realized that money couldn't buy life.

Leaving the hospital, she stuffed the painkillers in her handbag.

Her phone rang, and she answered. It was Daniel's voice. "I have some time in half an hour. If you're free, Ms. Hughes, we can meet at the café below The Hughes Group to discuss the matter of the mute child."

Margaret said, "Okay, I'm on my way."

Margaret had thought he was unwilling to help, but now it seemed he was willing to find the person.

Daniel stated, "No rush, I have some things to handle here. If you get there early, just wait for me in the café's private room."

Daniel hung up, put on his police uniform, and headed to The Hughes Group.

The employees looked up, wondering why a cop was there.

Under everyone's gaze, Daniel entered the elevator, went to the CEO's office, and pushed the door open.

Alvin was reporting to Raymond. Seeing Daniel enter, he was shocked. "Officer, what brings you here?"

"I need to speak with Mr. Howard. Mr. Howard, this matter involves your privacy. I suggest you clear the room." Daniel shrugged, glancing at Alvin, then at Raymond.

With a nod from Raymond, Alvin left the office, seeing a group of people peeking. He frowned. "Is your work done?"

Everyone quickly scattered, returning to their desks. Alvin also left.

In the office, Daniel, expressionless, officially said to Raymond, "Mr. Howard, someone has reported you for patronizing prostitution. I'm here to get the details and take your statement."
