Chapter 312 Margaret Belongs to Him Alone
Sarah defended herself, "I didn't say she was out to get you. How would I know what she said on that call? But do you really know Margaret? I've known her way longer than you have. She's the type who pretends to be nice while getting others to do her dirty work. She loves being praised as a saint. I've said all I need to say. Figure it out for yourself."
"Ms. Martinez, what should I do?" Evelyn asked.
"No matter what you do, it won't help. Margaret holds grudges. If you've crossed her, just consider yourself unlucky," Sarah said sympathetically.
Evelyn left the hospital, growing more suspicious of Margaret. The problem had to be with that call from Margaret.
Margaret didn't want to help and put on a show for everyone.
If Margaret wanted to make things difficult for her, then no one would have it easy!
Evelyn made the same choice as Ashley, going to the grocery store to buy the sharpest machete and spending the whole night sharpening it at home.
In the Hughes Manor, Margaret slumped on the carpet, clutching Nancy's jewelry, her tears already dried up. Tiny droplets still clung to her eyelashes.
Suddenly, the phone rang.
She didn't check the caller ID.
Answering the call, Daniel's voice was as gentle as water, very soothing. "Ms. Hughes, I have good news for you."
"Alright," Margaret replied weakly.
But she wasn't looking forward to this good news at all.
"I've convinced Mr. Garcia. He's willing to see you personally. When are you available?" Daniel asked excitedly.
He was usually a calm person, but her life and death had made his voice waver.
Daniel had spent a lot of time persuading David, sending him fine wine and cigarettes. Ultimately, it was David's granddaughter who spoke on his behalf, and David agreed to see Margaret.
He thought Margaret would be as happy as he was, but she coldly refused, "Mr. Taylor, there's no need to go through all that trouble."
"What?"
"I don't want to live. I can't find a reason to stay in this world."
"Mrs. Hughes, if it's because of problems in your marriage with Mr. Howard, I think you can get a divorce. There's no need to give up on life. You only get one life."
But even this one life felt exhausting to her. Fate had shattered all her hopes, one by one.
If her parents were still alive, she would gladly accept David's consultation.
"Ms. Hughes, your health can't be delayed any longer. The longer you wait, the worse it will get."
"Mr. Taylor, I know you're a good person. Even though you're no longer a cop, you're still willing to help everyone you can. But there are too many people suffering in this world. You can't save them all, nor can you help them all."
Margaret forced a painful smile. "Don't get involved in other people's lives so easily. It will make you bear burdens you shouldn't have to. Mr. Taylor, you said it yourself, life is precious. You're wasting such precious time on someone who's about to die. It's not worth it. I have nothing to give you in return. To find a girl you like and fall in love. My fate is sealed, and I've given up."
Daniel wanted to say more, but Margaret hung up.
He laughed in frustration, then got up to change clothes, planning to go to the Hughes Group to personally ask Raymond to persuade Margaret to see the doctor.
At the CEO's office of the Hughes Group, Raymond's face changed several times after hearing Daniel's purpose. He then picked up a pack of cigarettes, took one out, put it in his mouth, lit it, and started smoking.
"Raymond, did you hear what I said? Margaret's health is already in a terrible state. You need to persuade her to get treatment," Daniel said angrily when Raymond didn't respond.
Raymond lifted his eyelids and sneered through the smoke, as if he had heard a funny joke. "This is the second time you've told me Margaret is sick, right?"
"That's right. She's your wife. Please show her more concern," Daniel said, leaning on the desk to emphasize his point.
Raymond coldly replied, "If you're done, please leave. I have work to do. I won't be seeing you out."
Daniel was infuriated by his attitude, but he had delivered his message and assumed Raymond would care. He turned to leave.
"Daniel!"
Daniel turned back, looking at Raymond, who was smoking in his chair.
Raymond flicked the ash from his cigarette, his eyes cold. "I appreciate you helping Margaret in court. But you should know, she's married. Shouldn't you both maintain some boundaries? You were a cop. Did you learn in the force how to get entangled with other men's wives?"
"Margaret and I are innocent. There's nothing inappropriate between us."
"Innocent? Mr. Taylor, we're both men. Men like beautiful women; I get that. But I'm warning you, even if you were the mute boy Margaret saved, you need to know your limits! Otherwise, don't blame me for being rude!"
"The mute boy?" Daniel understood that Raymond had misunderstood.
He was about to explain that he wasn't the mute boy.
But Raymond had no interest in listening. "Mr. Daniel Taylor, close the door on your way out. You should find a girlfriend and make Mr. Joe Taylor happy. All of Mr. Joe Taylor's children are dead, and he's counting on you, his legitimate son, to inherit the family business. As far as I know, he wouldn't want a married woman to be your wife."
"Raymond, if you don't heed my advice today, you'll regret it one day," Daniel said coldly, then turned and left the CEO's office, slamming the door behind him.
Raymond bit his lip and sneered.
'Margaret, with late-stage liver cancer, about to die? Do they think I am that gullible? Margaret, so young, getting sick?' He thought.
This had to be a scheme between Raymond and Margaret to elope. He wouldn't fall for it.
Were they planning a fake death next, so Margaret could become Daniel's woman?
Margaret was his, and no one could take her away.
The next day, Margaret received a call from a courier, saying her package had arrived and asking her to come downstairs.
She hadn't ordered anything, but the caller insisted she come down. She had no choice but to go downstairs and walk out of the Hughes Manor.
Sure enough, she saw a delivery truck with courier ads across the street.
Margaret walked over and was about to speak when she was struck on the head and fell unconscious.
Evelyn dragged Margaret into the trunk and sped away.
