Chapter 432 Turn Around, I'm Behind You

The priest glanced at Raymond, shook his head, and led him into the church.

Raymond knelt before God, deeply devout.

He prayed silently and thought, 'I'm willing to give up ten years of my life if Margaret can just wake up.'

He'd even die right then and there if it meant the person he loved could get through this.

Following the priest, they walked to the backyard.

Snow was still falling softly.

They approached a massive ancient tree, its branches blanketed in white snow.

A gust of bitter wind blew, causing the snow to cascade down from the tree, adding a touch of desolation.

On the branches hung a few amulets, sparsely placed, each inscribed: [Hoping Raymond wakes up safely].

Raymond immediately spotted a safety amulet with those words, signed by Margaret.

How much time had passed? Their amulets had reunited here.

With his distinct fingers, he hung his safety amulet next to Margaret's.

The priest showed him Margaret's prayer written in blood.

Though the blood had dried, it was still shockingly red.

Raymond's heart ached unbearably when he saw the thick prayer letter.

Margaret had done so much for him!

How much blood must she have shed to write so much?

The priest asked, "Sir, I once asked the lady a question. If she did all this and you still didn't wake up, what should she do? Now, I ask you the same question."

"Then I would die with her." Raymond immediately replied.

"Is it worth it? Love is ultimately just a fleeting dream."

"It's worth it because I know she made the same choice as I did."

The priest shook his head, sighed, turned, and walked out, closing the door behind him.

Raymond pricked his finger with a sterile lancet, letting a drop of blood fall onto the marble inkwell. He grabbed a fountain pen, dipped its nib in the crimson pool, and began scrawling across the parchment—each stroke sending sharp jolts up his finger like fire-ant bites.

But none of that mattered.

As long as the outcome was good, everything was worth it.

He thought, 'Margaret, wake up. The world isn't as cold and hopeless as you think. Spring flowers are about to bloom. Wear your favorite pretty dress, and let's go to our old college campus, enjoy the outdoors, ride bikes. Wouldn't that be nice? You used to complain that I was too busy with work to travel or shop with you. Now I have time. If you want, I can drop everything and travel the world with you, shop with you, watch movies with you, eat your favorite snacks. Of course, if you don't want that, if you still wish for me to die sooner. That's fine too. I will completely, utterly, leave your world. Daniel would probably be happy to do all the things you want. Margaret, you're the sole heir to The Hughes Group. If you leave, what will happen to The Hughes Group? Soon, I will leave too. What will happen to Marlon's lifelong efforts?'

As Raymond prayed, he suddenly thought of the first time he met Margaret: she wore a red down jacket, her hair was in a bun, and she looked radiant and charming with her delicate makeup.

"Raymond, I love you."

"Raymond, no matter what you do, no matter how you treat me, I will never leave you or give up on you. But you better treat me well because I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't."

"Raymond, I'm finally your bride! I'm so happy! I hope we can be happy every day!"

"This is the watch I gave you, Raymond. Wear this watch and don't secretly take it off! You're so busy with work, you don't have time for me. But you're planning for our future. We can't rely on our parents forever, right? My father can't protect us forever. So we have to rely on ourselves. When you have a moment at work, look at the time and think of me. I'm too idle, and besides thinking of you, I have nothing else to do."

"Raymond, do you prefer boys or girls? If you like both, I'll give you two, one boy and one girl. You name the boy, I'll name the girl. I wonder if they'll look more like you or me."

"Raymond, today is Christmas! Christmas is a day for family reunions! I told you not to cause trouble! Why didn't you listen? Were you so eager? Did you really wish for my dad to die?"

"Go to hell!"

"I'm only interested in the topic of your death. I don't want to know anything else."

"Raymond, you have to be good to me for life. So many people don't believe in us. You have to prove them wrong. Work hard, achieve your dreams and ambitions, and make those who look down on you regret it."

"Raymond, after my surgery, I want the first person I see to be you. Let's go see the postcards at the milk tea shop, and then I'll recover, wear a white wedding dress, and be your bride again. This time, I'll remember what you look like as my husband and never forget you."

"Raymond, I like you. Do you have a girlfriend? If not, consider me. I'm really pretty."

Memories surged like a tide, overwhelming him.

Raymond finished writing, then drove to Silverbrook.

All along the way, Margaret's image and voice filled his mind, refusing to fade.

His heart was heavy, suffocating, and oppressed.

Would it work?

Would Margaret wake up?

He didn't know, and he didn't dare to think.

His finger throbbed painfully as he gripped the steering wheel.

The cut on his finger was so deep that it felt as if the knife was slicing through him all over again.

As soon as the car parked in the hospital basement, Raymond's phone rang.

He took the elevator, not noticing the call.

Until the elevator doors opened, and he strode towards the ICU.

The phone rang again.

He pulled out his phone, not checking the caller ID, and answered.

"Where are you?"

It was Daniel's voice.

Raymond paused, holding the phone, about to speak when he saw Daniel pacing and talking on the phone outside the ICU, his back to him.

"Raymond, where are you?!" Daniel's tone was angry.

Raymond replied, "I'm behind you."

Daniel turned and saw Raymond walking towards him, phone in hand.

Raymond thought Daniel had brought David, hoping Margaret could be saved.

He was about to ask.

Daniel punched Raymond in the face.

Raymond staggered, the blow was hard, making him gasp in pain.
