Chapter 64 Raymond Is Pained by This Scene.
Everyone's eyes were glued to Raymond, even Margaret's.
Her heart was thumping like it was trying to bust out of her chest.
Margaret bit her lip, staring hard at Raymond. What was he gonna say? Yes or no?
Raymond pulled his gaze away from Margaret and said coolly, "My last name's Howard."
Sarah's tense face eased up, giving Dorothy a weak smile. "Just call him Mr. Howard."
Dorothy immediately put on a suck-up smile. "Mr. Howard, nice to meet you. You look like a person of wealth and status. So classy."
She stuck out her hand, trying to cozy up to Raymond. She had no clue Raymond was Margaret's hubby or that he got Ashley canned from the hospital.
Dorothy had one thing on her mind that latched onto Sarah and maybe score some perks for their golden years.
Raymond glanced at Dorothy's hand, all rough and callused.
When he didn't shake it, Dorothy's fingers, hanging in the air, curled up a bit, and her lips twitched.
Sarah looked around the Chapel of Rest and spotted Margaret. Her eyes lit up as she walked over. "Margaret, you're here too?"
Everyone turned to look at Margaret as soon as she said that.
Raymond walked over with Sarah.
His eyes were ice-cold.
Margaret tried to stand up, but her legs were numb from squatting too long, and she almost hit the ground.
A flash of glee crossed Sarah's face. She thought, 'Go ahead, fall and break something.'
Raymond didn't get a chance to help Margaret.
A strong hand grabbed Margaret's arm, and she fell into Daniel's arms.
Daniel said, "Ms. Hughes, watch out."
Margaret looked up and saw it was the kind-hearted Daniel.
Raymond felt a twinge of jealousy but kept his face blank. Still, the arm Sarah was holding got tense.
Sarah noticed. She glanced at Raymond's clenched fist.
She smiled at him. "Raymond, what's up?"
Raymond didn't look at her and said coldly, "Nothing."
Margaret quickly stood up straight. Daniel brought over a chair and put it behind her. "You've been squatting too long. Take a seat."
Margaret waved him off. "No need."
Daniel insisted, "I already brought it over. Just sit."
Then Alvin showed up with another chair and put it behind Margaret. "Ms. Hughes, sit on this one."
Margaret's eyelid twitched. Alvin was Raymond's guy.
She looked up and saw Raymond's calm, indifferent stare.
Raymond said mockingly, "Ms. Hughes, why are you staring at me? Got something on my face?"
Dorothy watched and started to get it—Raymond didn't like Margaret.
Margaret glanced around. Sarah's eyes were full of challenge, Raymond's were cold, and everyone else was curious which chair she'd pick.
Margaret didn't want to embarrass Daniel in front of everyone.
Plus, Raymond was with Sarah and had said he was her boyfriend.
She had no reason to care about Raymond's feelings anymore.
She'd cared for so long, and she was done.
Margaret thought about it and smiled gratefully at Daniel. "Thanks."
Daniel smiled back. "Ms. Hughes, no problem."
Margaret sat in the chair Daniel brought over.
Sarah, being a pain, asked, "Margaret, who's the guy next to you? I remember you didn't have any guy friends before. When did you meet? How come I didn't know?"
Raymond squinted, clearly intrigued by Sarah's question.
Margaret shot back, "Do I need to report to you when I make friends?"
"Margaret, if you don't want to say, I won't push. If you're still mad about last time, I can apologize." Sarah pouted, looking all regretful.
Margaret felt sick to her stomach and just ignored her.
"You did nothing wrong; no need to apologize," Raymond's casual remark made Margaret's already aching heart hurt even more.
Margaret thought, 'He thinks Sarah did nothing wrong. It's always my fault.'
Raymond looked at Sarah, his tone icy. "Now that I've brought you here, I'm out. Got a contract to sign."
If he had known, he wouldn't have shown up today.
Margaret sneered. Raymond saying a sweet goodbye to Sarah right in front of her was both ironic and laughable.
How loving and affectionate they were.
Sarah nodded obediently and even fixed Raymond's tie. "Alright, you go ahead. I'm just happy you brought me here."
Raymond paused but didn't stop her.
Alvin walked up to Raymond. "Mr. Howard."
Raymond glanced at Sarah, his gaze deep, and told Alvin, "You stay here to protect her."
Alvin handed the car keys to Raymond. "Yes, Mr. Howard."
He knew the "her" Raymond meant was Margaret.
Raymond's fingers took the car keys, and he walked away, his back cold and without a hint of hesitation.
Margaret dug her fingers into her palm. The physical pain made her heart hurt less.
Leaving Alvin to protect Sarah. How affectionate he was.
Margaret chatted with Daniel on the side.
Sarah held her phone, pretending to take selfies but actually snapping photos of Margaret and Daniel laughing together. She then sent them to Raymond: [Raymond, Margaret looks so happy. I think they really make a good couple.]
Dorothy walked up to Sarah with a plate of desserts. Sarah glanced at the desserts and frowned. Such unappetizing sweets, she was already fed up just looking at them. How could she eat them?
Sarah said, "Sorry, I had a very filling breakfast."
Dorothy asked, "Ms. Martinez, is that gentleman your boyfriend?"
Sarah smiled. "We're planning to get married. We just took our wedding photos."
Dorothy said, "No wonder you look so well-matched. You're getting married. Ms. Martinez, you're so kind to come to Ashley's funeral. If it weren't for you, we couldn't have afforded such a nice funeral."
With that, her nose tingling, tears streaming down her face, then she continued, "Ashley was so unlucky, meeting a bad man who cheated her out of money and love. She finally got a good job through connections. How did she suddenly resign and die so mysteriously?"
"Dorothy, don't you know why Ashley resigned? She took money from a patient's family, violated the rules, and was fired." Sarah covered her mouth, feigning shock.
Dorothy was stunned. "Is that true?"
"Yes, the person who bribed her is here at the funeral today," Sarah finished speaking and covered her mouth, "Oops, I let it slip. Dorothy, I didn't say anything."
Dorothy cried and begged Sarah to reveal who had bribed Ashley.
Sarah hesitated for a moment before pointing to Margaret, who was chatting with Daniel at the bottom of the steps. "It was her. Dorothy, if you don't believe me, you can ask at the hospital. Many people know about this. Ashley was fired because she accepted her money. She was upset and complained to her husband, who is a powerful man. Even the hospital director listens to him. Dorothy, I advise you not to provoke her, or you might get retaliated against."
