Chapter 571 Better to Have, But It's Okay Without
Lyric's phone was snatched away by her friend, Mireille. "You don't need to call anyone."
"Lyric, what do you mean you don't need to? You've been through so much, and you still don't want to tell your family? You might be able to handle it, but I can't." Mireille was fuming. Lyric had always been pampered since she was a child; she had never faced such hardships.
Lyric couldn't deny that she was angry. When she first found out she had lost the baby and would never be able to have children, she had smashed everything in the hospital room to vent her rage.
Now, as she gradually calmed down, she could look at the situation more rationally.
She was leaving tomorrow; there was no need to bring this unhappiness to her parents. If they found out, knowing their temper, they would definitely retaliate against the Taylor family, and bankruptcy would be the least of their worries.
But Daniel had been someone she had loved for so many years. She couldn't bear to see him lose everything.
"My parents are getting old; I don't want to worry them."
This flimsy excuse was quickly seen through by her friend. "You don't want to worry your parents? More like you don't want Daniel to suffer, right? I know what you're thinking, Lyric. You have to let me help you get some justice. I won't tell your parents, I promise. But Daniel, I can't let him off so easily."
"Really, there's no need—"
"Don't worry about it. I won't leave him with nothing; besides, only your family has that kind of power, and I don't. I just won't let him have it easy." Mireille took a sip of her drink.
Lyric handed her phone back to her. "You should drink less."
"Lyric, you're leaving tomorrow. It'll be hard for us to meet again. When you have time, come back to Silverbrook to visit us." Maybe it was the alcohol, but Mireille smiled through her tears. "I don't want you to go, but I can't selfishly ask you to stay. Lyric, I never thought we'd become friends. Your family's kindness to mine is something I'll never forget."
Lyric's throat tightened. "When our family was on the brink of bankruptcy, I was the only daughter. I was almost ready to sell myself to pay off our debts. I sent out a message to everyone, and you were the only one who responded. You listened to my troubles and introduced me to your father. If it weren't for the Vaughn family's investment, I don't know where I'd be now. We weren't even close back then, but you helped me out of kindness."
Lyric handed her a tissue. "Your family had the capability; you just needed a chance. Besides, my dad made a good profit from that investment. It was nothing."
"Lyric, you'll always be a princess to me. I want you to be happy every day, to live a life free of worries. Seeing you like this breaks my heart." Mireille choked up, her eyes red with tears. "It hurts more than being deceived by a bad man."
Lyric's eyes welled up when she heard this. There were still good people in the world, still so much kindness.
Not everyone was like Daniel.
"Don't get all emotional. No matter where I am, we'll always be friends for life." Lyric forced a smile, even though it felt exhausting and insincere. She didn't want Mireille to worry.
Lyric then asked, "By the way, if Daniel comes looking for you after I leave—"
"I'll be cold, dismissive, and uncooperative." Mireille snapped her fingers. Seeing Lyric's approving look, she added, "Going back to your parents might be good. They probably have a better match lined up for you, someone better than Daniel. When you get married, have a grand wedding to spite him."
Lyric smiled. "I won't use my marriage as a tool for revenge."
She would meet the person her parents had chosen and see how things went. If he was a good person and didn't mind her inability to have children, maybe they could work something out.
After dinner, Mireille invited Lyric to stay over. Lyric didn't refuse. They shared a bed, talking late into the night.
Before falling asleep, Lyric heard Mireille say, "If you marry that guy, I want to be your bridesmaid."
"We haven't even met yet."
"Just in case."
"Lyric, do you hate Daniel?"
Staring at the ceiling, Lyric thought for a long time. Mireille, thinking she didn't want to answer, changed the subject. A small nightlight stood on the carpet beside the bed.
Lyric finally said, "Objectively speaking, I can't say I'm blameless. I approached him with a fake identity, pretending to be poor to gain his sympathy. When we first slept together, I thought he liked me. I was deluding myself, thinking he recognized me. I gave him the chance to disrespect me. Honesty is so important, and I built our relationship on lies. He just gave me what I deserved."
"My parents were right; compatibility is crucial. But I don't regret it. I don't regret having a crush on him. And I don't regret leaving now. Once I leave, I'll be back to my old self." Lyric smiled, encouraging herself. "As for my inability to have children, nothing is absolute. Maybe it was a misdiagnosis, or maybe medical advancements will help. A woman's life isn't just about having kids or pleasing a man. Children are just one part of life. It's great if I have them, but it's okay if I don't."
Lyric continued, "I believe a man who truly loves me won't care about my ability to have children. He won't mind. I'll pick myself up and live my life well."
"Lyric, do you know what I envy most about you?" Mireille asked, her eyes hazy with drink.
Lyric looked at her. "What?"
"You grew up in a loving family. The same situation that would make us feel like the world is ending seems like nothing to you. If I couldn't have children, my dad would kill me. Families like mine, stuck in the middle, are destined for business marriages. If I couldn't have kids, I'd be useless. My dad would probably abandon me and have another child with my mom." Mireille sighed.
"You have the courage to make mistakes and the bravery to face loss. Lyric, I hope you stay happy and keep fighting against an unfair world. I believe a princess like you will find a prince who treats you well. Maybe that match your parents found is the one."
